Dick Williams should consider doing a clean sweep of the organization from top to bottom and bringing in a new developmental staff. There are far too many talented players underperforming or stalling out.

I understood to the extent that he was always more fringy than a Garrett or Romano, but I thought he'd at least pitch about how he did in spring training. But it was pretty clear after his first two starts that he wasn't ready.

Not only was Rookie an unusual choice for the rotation, but he missed a couple of turns and didn't go down for a rehab start. His start today didn't give the team much of a chance.

If Cody Reed does ok in relief the next couple of times, I'd get him in the rotation to replace Davis. He didn't do well agains the Cubs, but that shouldn't be determinative.

Another thought - when Mes comes up send Reed to AAA to start games. Reds will be sending a pitcher down, make it Cody, for a short set of stretch out outings.

I knew all of the Reds prospects would flame out and the Reds would never be good again the second Rookie Davis threw his first pitch today and it was 100% confirmed after he gave up 5 runs and 7 hits.

I want to believe in reed. He has all the ability but watching that cubs game made it clear he is not ready to be a major league starter. Deer in the headlights look and feel. Maybe a few good months in the pen then he gets another go but not a couple of outings.

I didn't see the game, so I can't comment. But if Reed continues to do well in relief, I'd give it a shot. I'd pick a "lower leverage" situation than facing the Cubs next time.

I don't get how they cut the bullpen down to 7 on Friday to bring Mesoraco up. With this kind of performance on a daily basis carrying 3 catchers is not going to work unless we are going to shuffle multiple relievers up and down every few days

Last I checked Schebler had one of the best UZRs in RF so far. It's a much more athletic team.

Everyone should notice, of course, that Peraza now takes the first pitch every at bat. So somebody is talking to him.

This game is over anyways. Let him throw 100 pitches and send him to AAA tomorrow. No reason to overwork an already overworked pen

The only series I remember similar to this was sometime about maybe 5 years ago or so the Reds got pounded in Oakland in a 3 game series. That was probably the worst beating the Reds took in a series until this one.

I'm not sure who mentioned it, but they were right. Our hitters seem to miss so many fastballs in the middle of the plate, compared with every other team who hits our straight fast balls into the seats.

Absolutely. You don't want to put further stress on the back end guys who have done a decent job. Some of these guys have to suck it up and go a little longer than you'd typically see in these situations.

Even during the Lost Decade, the Reds never gave up 5 runs in the first inning or started the season 10-12. This is the worst it's ever been and they'll never be good again. :(

Raisor and I were having this discussion on twitter, but i don't think I've ever seen a month with SP this bad before from the Reds. And I'm not being hyperbolic. Raisor pulled up a few which were close, but the runs given up combined with the short outings, I don't think I've seen it before.

It's easy to block out but just last year the Simon/Lamb/Moscot brigade was about as bad as anything I've seen.

I will say that sending Davis out there with 15 days between starts didn't do him any favors. A rehab start would have been nice.

Have to wonder if this becomes a recurring issue with their plan to cycle guys between CIN and farm clubs.

Once Mesoraco comes up and the pen is 7 deep, there will be one or two constantly rotating bullpen spots between Cincy and the minors.

He has tools but no one expects much with the bat. He's a glove first guy who they hope developes into a decent bat. Kinda like Cozart was. He will probably finish with a sub 600 ops.

He's hit 50+ XBH each of the past two years. Kid has a some real sting in his bat, and we're seeing it today.

Stand by what I said but think he will eventually be a 700 ops bat with good D. Solid player. Just wasn't offensively ready for the big leagues. Hitting a borderline triple a pitcher isnt showimg me much.

What rebuilding? Every promising pitcher either has an ERA of 67.00 or is always hurt. And they've had four winning seasons since 1999. This isn't a winning program that bandwagon fans can't handle the ups and downs of. It's all down.

Right. But the starters who get cycled in and out (if they do) will often be at risk of these long layoffs between outings.

They began a gut renovation around 2015.

He's not a slap hitter, just a bad hitter with bad mechanics right now. He's very talented but don't expect much this year. Has plus bat speed though and will generate some power. 15 homers in a good year.

It's a decent example. Lot of pitches, a 9.00 ERA for this game. One inning, one run.

Still, watching him pitch you can see that he's not that far from being an effective major league pitcher. Has the stuff, just needs to improve command.

Right, and he does it pitchers like that all the time. I remember him having Cingrani of all people intentionally walk a guy to load the bases.

I'd say the last thing Reds pitchers need to be doing at any given time is putting more runners on base.

With all the unhappiness on the starting pitching the bullpen has a 3.43 ERA and leads baseball in Ks. Going into today.
