Hey, back to back starts for Mesoraco.

Hope to win tonight but with Davis I expect to give up several runs. Going to need to win in a high scoring affair. Also I doubt they get tomorrow's game in and Friday may be in jeopardy as well.

Look at the Rook hitting 95 with his fastball.

Rookie has some zip on his fastball or the gun is juiced. 94/95 in the first.

This is incorrect. Score is 0-0. And the Bears are winning.

Tom Servo

Good first inning for Rookie. I have some doubts about his ability to stick as a starter (and if this is a fool's errand to run him out there right now), but he's displaying the biggest reason why the Reds gave him this opportunity and that's his poise and confidence. If he gets beat it won't be because he's rattled.

Jordan
05-03-2017, 07:41 PM
Great job, Rook. Outstanding poise to get out of that jam with no runs scored.

Kid could end up as a very good BOR starter. Ceiling is a #3 at best, but he could end up being a solid piece of the Reds' future.

TheTimeIsNow
05-03-2017, 07:42 PM
This season with the bases loaded and less than 2 outs, the Pirates have 1 hit in 25 plate appearances. Only 4 sac flies.

That is a real stat.

The Operator
05-03-2017, 07:42 PM
Pretty good job of wriggling off the hook there. That had disaster written all over it but he pulled it off.

Hopefully this will be the proverbial "inning where they had their chance and didn't score, then the starter settles in" type night.

Think Welsh was right before, the 90-91 mph cutter from Rookie isn't working. Stick to the fastball and slider.

It seems like everybody throws a cutter these days. They can be very effective pitches but it seems like literally everybody throws a "cutter" now whether what they're throwing is any good or not.

I think Davis is going to be okay. His problem is he doesn't have an out pitch - but his offerings are all about average pitches or maybe even slightly better. He needs good command to be effective, though, and he hasn't reached the point where he can limit mistakes and consistently miss the sweet parts of the strike zone. Given more time I think he can get there though. A solid BOR starter eventually. His first couple seasons will be rough but I do see progress.

I think minor league promotions are in order. Promote the AA coaching staff to AAA...not the players. He and BobSteve both have mechanical issues and yet they're sitting on their butts pitching a few innings once a week in the major league bullpen, then coming in and getting their butts handed to them because they haven't had any sort of reps to work on their issues in game.

The way this is being handled by The Reds is ridiculous. Get them starting in the minors. This once a week bullpen crap is just awful.

Don't see anyone arguing that they don't stink currently. What some people are arguing is that there are things that could potentially be done differently to rectify the situation. Not saying I agree but some people don't just wanna say a guy stinks and be done with it. They want to figure out why. It's kind of the whole point of a message board.

It was apparent rather quickly (his first start notwithstanding) last year that Reed was not ready. Fine, send him back down.

But no, The Reds decided that running him out there time after time to get his teeth kicked in would be good for his confidence and overall development as a pitcher.

I get that Cody has stunk (I'm the first to admit it) but for people to act like The Reds have no culpability in this is absurd. They're basically Brian Reith-ing him.
