REDS' Pitchers amazingly walked only one batter last night. It was an incredible pitching performance, even though it was against a team with only one player having an OPS greater than .770 (Posey's .990, but it explains why he has only 9 RBI's.)

To me, that is on the coaches. How in the world did someone not give Alcantara the take sign after the pitcher & Peraza both walked? Awful baseball. Just dumb.

Then again, maybe the coaches just expect a player will be smarter than that. Now they will know better to think that in Alcantara's case.

Tony Cloninger

It is on the coaches to give a take sign to a hitter they know is going to swing freely and often. Many hitters do this. They expect the pitcher to groove one.

Tom Servo
05-13-2017, 05:09 PM
Man Peraza just seems to make nothing but weak contact
Welsh pointed out he's really not getting any leg strength right now from his swing.

I'd be more worried if we didn't see him own MLB pitchers for two months last year. I think he'll be fine.

Redeye fly

If Duvall and Suarez had walked in front of him, then criticism would be in order. They didn't, so it's not.

I'm not super critical of either one.

Alcantara swung at the first two pitches, but if he lets them go by, he's probably still down 0-2 in the count. Admittedly the first pitch was at the edge of the strike zone so I don't have a problem with him taking either.

Schebler hits the ball with authority, and if he runs into one no one is complaining.

I am a work the count guy and get annoyed with a guy like Peraza who seems to live by, "If it's close to a strike it's close enough to swing at" philosophy. But ultimately these guys all live and die within their own personal strike zone(s). Even Peraza at times has had some wild swings that you yell at scream at until the ball falls in somewhere for a base hit.

The reality is as great as the team swung the bats last week that's how poorly they're swinging them right now seemingly. That's probably part ball park and mostly just baseball.

Bunting a baseball thrown by MLB pitchers is hard. If a player has no clue how to bunt, I will never understand a manager asking them to do it. Especially 3x in a row when the player has proven they can't bunt. Might as well have him take every pitch and hope for a walk instead of doing that. Or heck, let him swing away.

Too bad he's still stuck in Louisville.

So sad.

Peraza is still not finely skilled in the IF. His fundamentals aren't quite down pat.

I just don't see it, sorry. Peraza is solid at short, and has done remarkably well at second - not his true position. Makes the double play well, sure handed.

I can understand the criticism that he lacks elite range in the hole. And he hasn't hit. But I've watched him play many times now and just don't see the problem defensively.

He muffed that play, which he rushed. I think he might have been thrown off when Suarez seemed to be going for it.

I think he's looked fine at 2B and made some nice plays at SS.

Remember when everyone said Suarez was a DH?

He makes good plays but he's not consistent. His fundementals are all over the place and has to rely on sheer talent.

Suarezi s a good example. They put him on 3b and left him there. He has become much more consistent and plays a good third now. He didn't before.

The Reds front office are getting excited. They want a top three draft pick and they'll get it. Another year of finishing last in the division ohhhh yay.

Not consistent - Peraza has played 225 innings this year at second base. He's got 49 put outs and 60 assists. One error.

Peraza has also played 42 innings this year at short. Has 4 put outs, 24 assists. One error.

Suarez made 23 errors at third last year, 19 at short the year before. He's vastly improved now, thankfully.

I respect your view, but I don't see the comparison.

Peraza does not have elite range or throwing arm. But he's very solid, makes very few mistakes defensively in the infield.

Welcome back to the fold BK.

I don't know if I'm all the way back yet. There are still a lot of things about this organization that I'm still bitter about. Intentionally folding to gain draft status is a major sin IMO, and it will take a while for me to forgive that. And I don't trust the front office at all.

But I'm trying.

When you lose two rotations worth of starters, it's kind of hard to accuse a team of tanking on purpose.

The offense has some serious thunder in it but I get the feeling we're going to be in for some "feast or famine" type stretches with it.

Still the most fun I've had watching Reds baseball in a long time though.

Come on now. Let's not bury our heads in the sand. Punting and tanking have been the primary topics of conversation for the last two years on RedsZone, and that philosophy has gained a lot of traction around here. I don't agree with it and never have, but I don't want to fight about it, and I'm trying to get past it. (Much like I had to with the 1994 strike--that one took a while, too. It was 1998 before I was all the way back.)

Anyway, like I said, I'm trying to come around. But it will take time.

My personal opinion:

Difference between tanking and rebuilding.

Tanking is when you bring in bad players in hopes that you are bad. I don't believe that's what the Reds have been doing.

It just seems like a weird thing to be hung up on. Lots of early 00s Reds teams were embarrassments to baseball due to poor planning and effort. Blowing it up and starting over like the Reds have the last two years is just another part of the sport.

I don't know, the bullpen and bench were pretty horrible the previous two years.
But I'm going to try to let it go.

Anyway, I don't want to hijack this game thread, so let's get back to today's game. Bonilla gave an outstanding effort today. He really stepped up when the team needed him. Definitely would be the Star Of The Game if Nux were still around.

I finally spent the whole thread (save the last two innings)last night, and tried to stay positive and I think I succeded. Only one snark comment from Phil :), and went to bed before the loss. Maybe that's the best way to do a game thread?

Considering all the handwringing going on here about Bonilla's start (and the "lack of planning" by the Reds FO), I think a bunch of fans should be frying up some crow today for lunch. I thought he did fantastic yesterday. Not the end result we wanted, but you certainly can't put any fault on Bonilla's effort. Great job.
