We got a line out from Hamilton, a grounder by 3rd for single by Cozart, K looking for Votto, bloop single by Cozart and then lineout to SS by Gennet.

Bleh Romano almost gets the double play he needed but just not enough time. Sal's already thrown 40 pitches and the 2nd isn't over yet.

Sal strikes out the pitcher Koehler for his third strikeout to end the inning. Still no runs but it's taken him 43 pitches to get through 2 innings.

Thom decides to start whispering when talking about Pujols' stats for some reasons.

Tony Cloninger
07-23-2017, 01:48 PM
Romano looks good so far but like Welsh and Thom were saying, having a change up would help especially trying to get fatter then just 5 innings as these young staters have had a problem doing.

Like Doug said a change up is hard to learn but these Reds pitchers seem to be adverse to learning it or its talking them a long time to do it.

Watching Votto slump is like watching a lion nurse a broken paw.

It's been officially 162 games since he started his Ted Williams streak last year. So it's now officially a new season. Votto struggles in April except in 2015 so it's going to be a month before he gets going again. It's science.

I think they should do away with the rule.

If the baserunner goes out of his way to run over a catcher not in the baseline, then not only is he out, but he's also ejected. But if contact takes place in the baseline (like it did here) then whatever happens, happens.

Pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning for Romano in the 5th. Outside of the 3-1 pitch to Ellis and some waste pitches to drive up his pitch count he's looked awfully good.

Great stuff there to Gordon. Like the no nibbling even if the previous 2 guys would not bite on his breaking pitches which were blah really.

BobSteve admitted after the game he tired in the sixth. Price should have removed him after 5 innings, 90 pitches. Hot night, big spot for the kid, lot of pressure. I thought it was a bad decision that may have cost the game.

But Sal looks confident and strong, no problem with 100 pitches or so. No more, though, IMO.

Yes because baseball should a happy sport where you never learn how to push yourself past 5 innings as a starter. If that was the 6th I would say yes or go batter by batter.

No. That I would not. If he was at 94 I would say get him out. But he is less than 90. You can go batter by batter. If he is still good then we will see that within the first 1-2 hitters. He could go through the 6th at maybe 102 if he goes in order. If he starts laboring get him out at 105 or so.

Sounds reasonable.

I do think it's good for pitchers to build up their arms and get used to pitching 7 innings, 120 pitches. But not as a rookie, I think 100 to 110 should be the limit.

With Sal having a good game, maybe the first time in MLB, I'd pull him after the sixth.

Yes I knew that needs to learn quote would annoy people. I did not mean it in the sense that these guys need to be taught lessons even if it hurts or let them sit out there to get beat up. It's the same confidence issue that you would get from leaving with a good feeling. To give yourself confidence that you can go another inning and closer to what you need to do as a starter, which is at least 6 innings and 100-110 pitches is good for your confidence too. No matter how much the game has changed having starters being able to go 6-7 at 100-110 pitches or less obviously.... Is what your trying to develop.

Votto just K'd. I pull him now in a double switch. I'd put Kivelhan at 1B hitting 9th and let the new pitcher hit 3rd.

Pull him? Seriously? Ha ha

Why not? He needs rest, the Reds have a 5 run lead and it puts the pitcher as the last guy up. Why Ha ha?

Damn even Thom making the good point that Lorenzen should get to start this year.

I' get the impression from comments he's made that Price is a big roadblock in that. He wants him pitching out of the pen every day not every 5th day.

It's Votto and you don't pull your super star just because he's slumping.

One legitimate question that needs to be asked is whether Lorenzen can actually be a starter. Find out this year.

Nope. But the game situation sasy its the right move and he does need rest. He's your star, but if you leave it up to him, he'll never sit out.

I'm a skeptic about Lorenzen starting and I don't think you can really find out much in 10 starts at the end of a season, but a guy like Adelman is the kind you push into the pen for these types of experiments.

When they are sure Herget is ready and maybe another reliever down in the minors then I'm sure they will look for Lorenzen to start. In the meantime Lorenzen is having another mini melt down. Great.

Tom Servo

Lorenzen escapes without further damage but Price has Iglesias warming. Guessing he's looking for a two inning save from him. Also guessing Price is feeling some real pressure to get a W.

The one thing that worries me about Lorenzen as a starter is he is off and on. ERA now at 4.09. Maybe the longer outings would change that.

Price has pulled him several times around these same situations with big leads for rest. He's not sitting him for slumping he's sitting him for rest. Don't give that you don't sit your superstars late in games with big leads BS.

It certainly makes me a little more leery but I think he's got the pitch mix and strong body to start. More than anything I'm just a bit concerned at how he's backslid this year with walks.

Lorenzen is a likeable guy, good athlete, can hit and run and the way things played out after his dad passed was a special moment, but there isn't mountains of evidence that he's anything all the special as a pitcher. He had a decent half season in the pen, but he's been ho hum this year IMO. If other teams value him the way Redszone does, I'd be shopping him.

As hard as he throws he has a straight fastball that even a weak hitter like Rojas could drive on the outside corner. I still like him and like Tom said he is cheap.

Last year I had seats in the upper deck down the LF line for an early September day game, but they were up far enough that they were just in the shade under the roof. (The row in front of us was in the sun.)
