We were supposed to get Disco vs Latos in Reds vs Marlins in 2015 but Latos got scratched.

Also (pedantic mode) I don't think it's actually "irony".

Irony means "the last thing you would expect." The way it's misused these days, it is ironic when "irony" is used correctly.

I was thinking "coincidental" as well.

Also "humorous" is fitting, for me at least.

Wouldn't it be ironic if it wasn't?

JaxRed
07-30-2017, 01:19 PM
OK, I will agree with coincidental. A way better word. I researched the real definition of the word irony. It's subtle....but in no case would 'the last thing you expect' be the definition.

BCubb2003

You might call it fateful.

The classic definitions of irony are:

Socratic irony: A black fly in your hemlock. Actually, it's when the teacher plays dumb to lead the students to learn a lesson. What if Alanis knew what she was doing and was trying to make people aware of the actual definitions of irony?

Dramatic irony: The audience knows what's happening to the characters in a play, but the characters aren't aware yet.

There might be modern versions of those, like when you say the opposite of what you mean to make a point. References to a "titanic struggle," for instance.

Or a kind of cosmic irony, where we are all characters in a play, and the angels know what's about to happen to us. "If you want to see God laugh, tell him your plans."

Welsh pointed out some struggles on balls to his left, that was the case with both plays.

After hearing all the stuff about how Suarez was a butcher who would never get better in any role other than DH, I don't worry much about kids struggling on defense. Peraza probably isn't a shortstop, but with Cozart out it doesn't matter.

If we could go into Spring Training 2018 with a healthy Homer, a healthy Disco and Luis Castillo, things would seem to finally be looking up.

Go out and sign a reliable veteran arm or two for the four spot in the rotation and let the youngens battle it out for the fifth spot.

A much improved rotation to pair with the bullpen and the offense might make the Reds competitive for the first time in half a decade.

Peraza is 13th of 22 NL shortstops in range runs, assuming 150 innings at the position.

He's mid-pack in range. Not his strong point. Low error-type, pretty consistent.

On the Miami broadcast they showed Castillo stopping almost immediately after hitting first. I'd love to see one of those GPS speed bubbles like they use on NASCAR broadcast. It HAS to show them slowing down before they hit first. Just run through the bag.

Great point. Even if he's not in the rotation, he'd be an excellent addition to the bullpen.

If the Reds are serious about competing next year, they'll go out and add a reliable rotation arm or two.

We'll likely lose Cozart, so shortstop will have to be shored up as well, but there's a lot to like for a team that's been dreadful for so long (said Pollyanna).

I enjoyed Castilla's 8 innings. Great job kid! Glad to have you

No idea why this kid was made available to the Reds in a seemingly "blah" trade, but he certainly looks like the real deal.

A 10-pitch eighth inning.

Woe is us.

Exactly. He honestly could probably finish it out but Iglesias needs some work so I like the way Price handled it.

Guys I have some very good news to share with you:
Moments ago, in the clubhouse Luis Castillo officially adopted me as his son!
Luis Castillo is now my Daddy!

But I think I'd give him another shot at starting next spring if I were in charge

Castillo and Iggy would be a nice #1/#2 punch. Bailey could be a nice #5.

Today's Joe Nuxhall Star of the Game is Luis Castillo, who pitched 8 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits with 6 K's and only 1 BB, and also was 1-for-3 with an RBI bunt single on a safety squeeze.

"We are deeply saddened to lose the Big Bopper," said Rick Walls, executive director of the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. "Lee May was a friend of the Hall and of everyone with whom he came in contact. Our condolences go out to Lee's family during this difficult time. We will always remember him for his contributions to the Reds, but also for his humor and genuine kindness."
