In case you're like me and haven't followed the Pirates much since the Reds last played them, you might want to know this: on June 8th 2017, Andrew McCutchen's line stood at .231/.309/.407 on the year. In the 44 games since then he's hit .377/.484/.714 with 13 HRs, 11 doubles, 30 walks to 24 strikeouts.

He's back.

Going back even farther than that, on May 23rd he was hitting exactly .200 with an OPS of .630.

Now, on August 1st, a tad over 2 months since then, his season OPS is .920, which is higher than it was in 2013 when he was the MVP. It's been a remarkable turn around.

Yeah, probably Duane Walker, though he was up by midseason in 1982. Gary Redus didn't get the call until September.

I'm not moving Winker and Duvall is just more of a sure thing than Schebler at this point. I'm not sure I would trade any of them honestly. Hire a manager who can manage to get 4 OFers consistent ABs. Shouldn't be that hard.

The defensive alignment is better with Winker in LF (Duvall's postion) and Schebler and has more offensive upside IMO.

Duvall's over 1000 ABs of .800+ OPS now. He's cheap and plays good defense. There's always the caveat of "if somebody offers you the farm for him," but barring that, he's not a guy I'm trying to move.

Especially with high OBP guys like Winker, Senzel, Votto, and to a lesser extent Geno in the lineup. I want his SLG.

Chip R
08-01-2017, 09:11 PM
The Reds have more invested in Winker than they do with Schebler. He's also historically got on base better than Schebler. That may offset Schebler's power advantage.

Defense is not the Pirates' strength, in case you're wondering.

No errors in the line score, but yes the 2nd and 3rd innings were pretty bad, with SS Mercer involved in 3 bad plays: He was standing on 2nd when Tucker got his RBI hit right thru where he should have been. Then on a bunt play, they tried to get the force at 2nd and Mercer had terrible lazy footwork and forced himself to come off the bag on a throw that was only slightly off to the RF side. Then on a cut-off throw to home they got Scooter in a hotbox and he got out of it because Mercer never covered 2nd. Also there was a short blooper that drove in a run that landed safely in the grass just behind 2nd, just to the LF side of 2nd that Mercer didn't get much of a jump on.
