They didn't necessarily need the 40-man slot. Alcantara is out of options, so the only way to remove him from the 25-man roster is to designate him for assignment.

The open 40-man slot is a byproduct.

I get that but there were other things that could have been done to accomplish this. I just think Williams has a reason for doing this beyond it's a byproduct.

No, I think they were just ready to cut Alcantara loose. They had seen enough, and are ready to go in a different direction.

The open 40-man slot is gravy. They can now use it to call up someone who currently isn't on the 40-man roster, or to activate someone from the 60-day DL. Or they can just bide their time.
