If Winker is gonna be a starter someday he has to face both RH and LH Pitchers.
I don't understand why he is sitting today, maybe there are other reasons. I don't know.

I would have liked to have seen Peraza start at 2B tonight for Gennett, and at SS tomorrow for Cozart. That way, he gets back-to-back starts and can get into a routine at the plate.

This is not a typical lefty. He's got a really weird and funky delivery. Not a bad game for Winker (and Gennett, for that matter) to get a night off.

Brewers to Honor Negro Leagues August 12, 2017.

The Milwaukee Bears played only one season nearly 100 years ago, but will be brought back to life on Saturday, August 12, complete with a special tailgate event and the chance to meet and get autographs from legendary players of ages past.
The Bears are Milwaukee’s connection to a piece of baseball history, American history, the Negro Leagues, which managed to succeed and produce major-league quality baseball for black athletes long before other sports were able to do the same.

The current representative of Milwaukee in the baseball world, the Brewers, will honor that legacy on Saturday, August 12, by donning the uniforms of the Bears and playing against the Cincinnati Reds, who will wear the uniforms of the Cincinnati Tigers, who played from 1934-37.

And boy, I thought it was just Thom but Welsh loves him some Brent Suter too.

They are both herky-jerky lefties who graduated from Catholic high schools in Cincinnati. (Suter from Moeller, Welsh from St. X)

And the Cincinnati Tigers uniforms were just two- or three-year-old Reds hand-me-downs.

IDK if the Reds meant to do this, but it seems as if their outfielders are very confident in charging the ball and throwing it in on target. Duvall doesn't have a great arm but he charges the ball hard and he gets rid of it - same with Billy....i think it's because they played a lot of infield while coming up thru the minors. Most OFers have to take an extra half step to be sure that they have the ball and good momentum. Hamilton and Duvall field the ball like an infielder.

You think it's baffling that Price doesn't hit a pitcher for Gennett against lefties? LOL, most would find it baffling if he did make such a move. Lorenzen is 1 for 9 at the plate this season.

The absence of pinch hitting in baseball is due to short benches. Teams carry more relievers, a 13 man staff right now for the Reds. Four man bench. So managers nurse their benches and don't pinch hit often. Generally, a trend I dislike.

I know the issues of short benches but even when Price has had options available to him in late innings, going way back to 2014....and I mean the 8th and 9th innings not the 6th he refuses to do it. I grew up in an era of 10-man pitching staffs in the 70's and 80's, and later 11-man staffs in the mid 90's. So that meant seven-man (and later six-man) benches. Clubs would often platoon at one or sometimes two positions (rarely three) to maximize lefty/righty advantages. The typical bench would often look like this:

1. Backup catcher

2 & 3. Infielders, preferably one lefty and one righty hitter. One should play SS

4 & 5. Outfielders, preferably one lefty and one righty. One power hitter and one speed guy preferred. One should play CF.

6. PH specialist. Often nominally a backup 1B or corner OF, though occasionally a 3B or C

7. Wild card. Could be a 3rd C, a speed first guy (often a 2B, SS, or CF type) to be a designated PR and defensive specialist, or a 2nd PH specialist (generally hits from the opposite side than the 1st PH specialist hits)

I know we are not seeing 10 Man pitching staffs ever again. The 2012 Reds could probably have carried 11 pitchers since all 5 starters took all but 1 start and they all pretty much average 6 to almost 7 innings a start. It helped to have Simon as a long man also. He was very underrated out of the pen.

Again. I was not talking about PH every single time or before any late inning situation with a runner on or in scoring position in the 8th or 9th. And if they had a deeper bench yes I would do it with Billy if I had to.

Griffey was PH for here and there in 1975 against tough lefties. Lou started doing that to Paul O when he was atrocious against LHP one year. I know this teams options are limited though.

You still see pinch hitting for pitchers today. But years ago you'd see pinch hitting for position players. Late innings, you could see two or three consecutive pinch hitters in a tight spot.

This weakens the game IMO. Just not as much strategy in the game today. Bench players are insurance policies, not used affirmatively. Pitching changes seldom met by change of hitters.

If I were the guy in charge, I would put a max on the number of pitchers a team can carry on the 25. Would argue for a minimum five-man bench, limit of 12 pitchers.

Tim Adelman must've left something in Louisville and wants to go back to get it.

Adleman looked totally perplexed that his pitch allowed a run to score. Price, who shook his head as Braun stood in the batter's box, must have given up at that point.

Wild pitch scores Sogard. Price asked for a review but he already asked for 2 and both went against him, so the umpires aren't reviewing. Plus it was pretty obvious that he scored safely.

Has there been another game this year where more than 10 runs were scored, yet none of them were knocked in via single, double, or triple?

You can't let that ball get away if your Barnhart. That being said I think it's time for Adelman to be the next dfa.

Tonight's Joe Nuxhall Star of the Game is Brewers 3B Travis Shaw, who was 2-for-5 with a single and a 3-run HR.

Joe would obviously go with the Washington Court House native and son of former Reds closer Jeff Shaw.

0 and bleeping 2 and that's his waste pitch. I mean bounce it in front of you. Throw it high. I get pitching around Thames though. They're not trying to win so why not lose in style.

It was embarrassing IMO Adelman even acted as if he got him. Wasn't remotely close. Great secondary lead by Sogard and anticipation.

Time to take out the trash...Adleman and Feldman. If we are going to be bad there is no reason to have either on the payroll.

I have never had much faith in Adleman. That being said, bouncing a ball up there with the bases loaded, wasn't the most intelligent decision. What I did notice is that Price is managing to win games at any cost, but just doesn't have the knack of making the correct decision.

Yet another loss by 2 or 1 when the Reds score at least 5. Puke pitching. 10 games lost now scoring 5 or more by 2 or 1 runs.

Gotcha.

FWIW (let's be positive...I guess) Scooter is OPSing 1.250 vs lefties his last 13 games

Isn't Jeff Shaw still thinking about making a comeback with the Reds? He'd be better than Adelman.

Considering the bullpen situation, 5 runs wasn't going to do it tonight. They lost this game because they got shut out over the last five innings.

It's a little easier to PH for a pre-Bronx Paul O'Neill against a lefty when you have a Glenn Braggs sitting in the dugout who can capably remain in the game in RF after the PH appearance.

Norse, many times it has been 7+ runs scored to lose by 1 or 2.....turn half of those and the Reds are in the hunt....plus maybe they pursue an arm to get in the thick of the race. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not guaranteed to ever see Hunter pitch or what any of the young kids can do. Win now, this division sucks this season and the pathetic attitude toward pitching (starting) sucks even more. Just a lost throwaway season when the offense and BP could have gave the Reds a shot with DECENT starters.

He is? I need to check numbers more often or at least in the last weeks. All I read here since I can't watch every game is how horrible he has been against LHP. And I don't mean like a blind squirrel finding a nut sometimes bad but just horrible. Good for him. He needs to be better to avoid being PH for by the likes of me.
