Ervin gets a start in CF. Hopefully they will give a good long look in CF and see if he is in the plans for 2018.

This is Joe Morgan night in the FSO booth. He will along for the first three innings. We can always hope he stays and Thom leaves after the third.

Yes, you missed him going on the DL with a hip strain. Sounds like the Reds are going to take it slow with him according to an update today.

Thom and Joe dissing the moneyball approach to baseball. Because you gotta bunt and let that game clock wind down (in other words, give up an out).

OBP is what matters. We all know this. There's a finite number of places for players to land on the bases. And an infinite number of times players can get on base provided nobody makes an out. So making outs is what kills the opportunity to score runs. It's shocking to me how many people, hall of famers even, can't get this through their heads.

In one of the games, Joe was talking about RBI, I think, and started out talking old school, but by the end was espousing a SABR-sounding approach. I think at heart he knows this modern stuff, but for some reason bristles at the us and them, and reps the old school.

I don't mind the blue and orange, especially due to the historical context of it.

Remember that Mets brought National League baseball back to the Big Apple after a four-year absence. They took the blue from the Brooklyn Dodgers and the orange from the New York Giants. The stylized "NY" logo is also the old Giants logo.

Mrs. Verb is a Giants fan (hush, Raisor!) so we watch a lot of those games. Between John Miller, Krukow, and Kuiper, it's really refreshing compared to the "Duvall ought to bunt more" and "RBI good, OBP bad" crap we get night after night on the Reds telecast.

Joe Morgan logic:

"If I hadn't walked 1900 times in addition to my 2500 hits for a total of 4400 times on base, I could have had 3000 hits and gotten on base 3000 times total."

I understand where Morgan was coming from with all of this about less walks would equal more hits but I don't agree with him about it. For one thing if someone like Morgan or Votto swung more they would be swinging at pitches outside their comfort zone not mention outside the strike zone. IMO this would only equal a minimal amount of more hits. I highly doubt it would have got Morgan to 3000 hits.
Still it was good to hear Morgan in the booth. He's still much more refreshing that than bag of wind named Thom.

Oh I know but I was headed out the door and didn't have time to really parse that out. But you're right -- if major league pitchers know you'll swing at borderline balls, why would they throw you anything anywhere close to the middle of the plate?
