It really is amazing, though. If Hamilton played against everyone else the way he does against the Pirates, he'd be the MVP.

Its not only that he dominates the pirates, but off the top of my head he really seems to dominate them in their own ballpark.

The Pirates are supposed to be a savvy stats-oriented shifting defensive team, so you'd think they'd have an answer for Billy Hamilton.

It's probably just paranoia but with the Atlanta start and now tonight, I hope there isn't a "Book" getting out on Castillo where you just have to foul enough pitches off until you get something hittable.

Probably nothing, as I said earlier. He's a rookie who skipped AAA so he's bound to have nights like this.

There is a book on every young pitcher as he comes through.

I think on Castillo it's that you don't have to worry about the hook. It's fastballl usually, occasional change up.

As Castillo has said himself, he'll get better as the breaking stuff gets better.

I can't really speak to it because I was born in 1989 but I get it, the game definitely has changed into one dominated by the Three True Outcomes as opposed to some action in every at-bat.

There is something inherently satisfying about a pitcher going deep into games and especially completing the whole thing.

I think a big part of it in addition to stricter pitch counts is the fact that pitchers are K'ing batters a lot more now. I've been surprised to look back at some of the stats of pretty good pitchers in the past and outside of some of the true greats, a lot of pitchers just didn't K that many guys back in the day.

I love me some K's but they do rack up a pitch count.

Going back to the 1960s and 1970s, there were some great strikeout pitchers then too.

They were just trained differently. They were expected to be workhorses.

The big difference is money. Pitchers get paid so much today that teams don't want to risk overuse and injury.

The ironic thing is that there are probably more injuries now than before.

I think injuries get reported more now. Back when players didn't make much money and had to work side jobs in the offseason they had reasons to not tell anyone they were injured.

Agree. But today kids are pitching competitively, with work loads, very young. I think that has a role in the injuries, too.

The whole game has changed over the years, rather dramatically. The shorter starts, the bullpens today with 100 MPH guys, going with 12-13 pitchers, four man benches.

Very different. Incredible athletes today, guys like Billy Hamilton, Aroldis Chapman. Different, in some ways better, in some ways worse.

But even years ago, you knew about the star players. If Marichal, Gibson, Koufax or Drysdale got hurt, you knew, it was well publicized. Then Seaver, Carleton, etc.

And if you followed a team, like I followed the Reds, you would know the injuries. There was no internet, so the knowledge wasn't as widespread, true.

Of course, with some of those guys, they wouldn't miss a turn anyway. They were workhorses expected to pitch every turn.

He had 89'ish pitches, 3 guys had 33+ of them, not particularly sharp, just missing on most of his pitches. He's young, glad they got him out of there w/ minimal damage. Baby steps..

True, but you wouldn't have a Homer Bailey or Devin Mesoraco. A lot of them would be "Whatever happened to" guys. Now, we're always talking about how he's hurt again, how badly, how long, how soon, for a bunch of guys.

They'll disappear en mass until the next Pirates winning season when they'll all return and act like they're baseball royalty.

Yep. The Pirates, even if they are having a successful season, will always be the 3rd favorite team in Pittsburgh. The Steelers and Penguins consistently competing for championships makes the fanbase worse because if the Pirates are sucking, then people just say, "Screw it. I'll watch the Penguins/Steelers instead."

Pirates winning = "Pittsburgh is the best sports city in the world!! All of our teams are good!"

Pirates losing = "Why would I waste my time watching the Pirates when we have the Steelers and Penguins."

I'm not from Pittsburgh so I could not care less about the Steelers or Penguins. I'm Pirates through and through.
