Price feels an obligation to field his starting team against the Brewers, who are in a playoff competition.

When the Reds play the Mets four games next Thursday-Sunday, you'll see new players.

Awfully nice of Price to consider all of the potential playoff teams above his own - which is in the midst of a difficult rebuild. I'm sure those teams will return the favor next year and go easy on a younger roster as a "thank you" to Price for doing that.

FYI - my sarcasm is certainly not directed at you, KC. I'm simply frustrated with the majority of decisions Price has made to this point, and if that's really some consideration of his when creating the lineup, then frustration levels are still rising.

Price is doing the professional thing. It's good for his reputation and the team's reputation around MLB.

One thing for sure -- if Price were to tank this series, the Brewers would remember and act accordingly next time around.

Act accordingly how? By also playing their regulars? The Reds would actually be helping the Brewers by starting some younger players in order to get more of an extended look at what they might be able to bring next year.

Additionally, I'm not advocating Price literally start a lineup of replacements, a-la spring training. I agree that would be unprofessional. Strategically rotating some new players in game-by-game however, during a period of expanded rosters, seems like a perfectly acceptable and fair practice for a rebuilding team.

I wouldn't consider that tanking a series. There can be a middle ground.

Who do you want in the lineup? There are seven players on the bench.

Turner
Wallach
Peraza
Vincej
Kivlehan
Ervin
Winker

Other than Winker (who is still nursing an injury) and Peraza (who gets plenty of playing time), I don't see too many guys who warrant much PT.

Easy inning for Bailey. :) Schebler misses on diving attempt and it goes for double, and Braun needled one down 1st base line to set up 1st and 3rd with one down. LIner to Billy who nails guy at home. Sweet.

I would have started Ervin and given Duvall a break.

Interesting. Duvall sat five games ago, on August 31. I know he's slumping, not sure he needs to sit twice in five games.

Anderson is a tough right hander. Not sure why hitting RHH Ervin against him would be helpful today.

I could see the argument for Winker today if he were healthy.

I'm not arguing that Ervin is better. He's not. The benefit is seeing Ervin against tough competition. If Winker was healthy I'd have given him the start.

Lorenzen's BABIP has gone from .262 in the first half to .367 in the second half. LD rate against him much higher in second half. Fly ball rate much lower.

His walk rate is the same first half to second, his K rate has actually improved, his FIP has been steady (3.87/3.85 before today). His xFIP has actually improved significantly. Home run rate is up but just above 1, not terrible.

Numbers against lefties this season aren't very good. 5.12 BB rate, 5.19 FIP, 4.77 x FIP against lefties. Much better against righties. Lifetime has had trouble with lefty bats.

Not particularly, but there's no reason not to have a single LHP on the roster in September (not including Peralta, who is injured).

09-04-2017, 03:59 PM
I think the Reds should get a good veteran pitcher to set up Iglesias next year.

I'd keep Lorenzen on the multiple innings relief track, but reduce his outings. He has 60 already this season, we're in early September, Three plus weeks to go.

It's a heavy workload for a guy who throws multiple innings frequently.

Today's Joe Nuxhall Star of the Game is Billy Hamilton, who was 2-for-5 with a single and a game-winning solo HR with two outs in the bottom of the 9th.

Love the HR, but, as usual, Billy was even more awesome on defense. He threw that runner out at home when I had it chalked up as a run, but the most overlooked play may have been when Schebler went to the turf to try and catch a looper (the second time, not the double) and Billy was right there to pick it up and hold the guy to a single. With most CF, that ball is probably a triple. People that want him to sit in favor of Schebler or Ervin playing more in CF need to be careful what they wish for..

Finding a legit CF who can back-up Billy and possibly transition to the starting role once Billy leaves town needs to be on the to do list this winter. A legit starting pitcher who isn't a question mark, a consistently effective late inning reliever and a CF are the top three needs for this team. That's a pretty heavy to do list for one off-season without even considering the muddy picture at SS and the probable need for a solid 50 start per year catcher.

Yes, Billy's great! And you just fired-off a number of his accomplishments today...then in the next breath you talk about the need to get ready for when he "leaves town"... Billy is just 26 years old and right in the heart of the rebuilding effort. Why is he leaving town ?

Two years until free agency. Time to start looking for the replacement now. To get a decent return, probably the 2018 July deadline is the time to deal him. If the pitchers get it together and they contend, they can keep him, but they still need a legit CF for when he sits. Given his body type and style of play that is probably ideally 30 to 35 times per season. Not a fan of Schebler or Ervin out there that much.

Nope they'd probably get prospects who might make a difference in a couple of years. That's why you wait until the deadline and see how it's going. Contending? Keep him. Flailing again? Go ahead and deal him.
