Took 25 pitches but an impressive first inning for Sal, getting McCutchen and Bell both to strike out swinging with the slider in the dirt.

First hitter taps out weakly, second hitter hits grounder between ss and third. Possible that Suarez could have had it. McCutcheon K's on ball in dirt.

Just you and me Tom

Winker flies out on a strange play. I guess ball was knuckling. McCutcheon retreats backwards, does a circle as he runs, and then has to come back and almost dive back for the ball cause he over-ran it. Cozart has regular fly out.

Votto lines to pitcher.

Romano gets 1st hitter on grounder down 3b line. Suarez make tough play look routine. Polanco K's on ball in dirt. (Apparently an old fashioned Yellow Hammer). Third guy singles on grounder between ss and 3rd. Last hitter flied out to Schebler in RCF.

I think I might have lost Tom.......

Suarez pops up to 1b and Gennet and Schebler fly out to OF

I'm around, more interested in the top half of innings with Romano.

Duvall and Schebler nearly killed each other out there, good god.

JaxRed
09-16-2017, 04:49 PM
Nova (P) K's and leadoff guy grounds to Scooter. Third hitter hits a ball that looked like it might be a collision between Schebler and Duvall but there is no collision and Duvall caught it for 3rd out. Romano looking solid.

We need a hit.

We didn't get a hit. Interviewing Hunter Greene now.

Big Sal looking good through 5. 4 hits, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts, 0 runs.

JaxRed
09-16-2017, 05:17 PM
You haven't missed much while were watching the Greene interview. Joey got the Reds first hit but then got caught napping at first. Pirates got a double but Romano pitched around it with help from a nice catch from Duvall.

Big Sal looking good through 5. 4 hits, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts, 0 runs.
Nova even better through 5, allowing only the single to Votto and also avoiding any walks with 6 strikeotus.

Suarez called out on a bad call from Joe West. I know....I'm shocked too. Scooter grounds out on 1st pitch. Schebler K's.

Tom Servo

Possibly the best start we've seen from Romano this year, at least through 6. Looking a lot like the guy in Pensacola who racked up groundballs and generated whiffs.

7 shutout innings for Sal on 89 pitches. I'd be fine letting him go out for the 8th.

Romano is a good pitcher for GABP. Lot of grounders today. Nice outing for him.

There goes that Hunter Greene again. Now he's doing TV interviews. I guess he'll do anything for attention.

Reds have really crushed the Pirates this year. Bucs single handedly killed Reds' draft position.

Tom Servo

Sal stays in to start the 8th.

1 pitch for the first out, pitch #91. See, this is a great learning experience because the lesson is you want to have this pitch count this deep in the game.

Al Oliver was one of my favorite hitters to watch in the 70s.

I had always hoped that Al Oliver might close out his career as a bench bat for the Reds, what with his Portsmouth roots. But there was never room for him on the bench.

Easy quick 8th for Sal, I'd let him start the 9th too.

I'd go with Iggy for one inning in the ninth. Iggy pitched last night, more than an inning. But he's been lightly used of late.

Price could let Sal go for the shut out. It wouldn't be nuts, but it's not necessary. 8 is enough.

Tony Cloninger

A bigger lead and I could see him going for a CG. However even if he did I would not let him go over 120 pitches.

He threw over 40 pitches last night, I have to imagine he's unavailable.

If it was 40 pitches, yeah. Shackleford is warming.

With his outing today, I'm going to add Romano to my group of near locks for the rotation next year.

Castillo, Bailey, Romano.

Disco also a favorite, but health a big question.

It was not Cody Reed but rather Zachary Levi from Chuck with his beard from the cheese puff era of season 3.

Those most have been some nasty offspeed pitches from Romano on those swinging strikeouts. He was burying those balls and the Bucs were hacking away.

This reminds of last year or what I remember from it. The Reds play horrible baseball, go 20 under .500 and then we played some pitiful teams and everyone had hopes for 2017. It's fool's gold, I say. The Pirates haven't been able to get out of their own way since August. They can't score runs, the pitching is iffy, and since September 5th, they've scored 24 runs, while giving up 46 and a record of 2-9, averaging 1.2 runs a game while their pitching has given up 4.2. I certainly hope Castillo, Romano, and Mahle are the real deal, but the jury is out. Last season's late streak probably saved Price his job, and this season's, if it continues may save it and warrant an extension. God, I hope not.

I wouldn't call it fools gold. These are young pitchers who we are counting on pitching pretty well. That's different than years past.

On instance I can think of is Lamb in 2015 with a 6+ ERA and his "fools gold" 11k/9. Watching him you knew the odds were stacked against him. The K rate gave us hope but not much else. Castillo, Romano and Mahle have looked like MLB caliber pitchers. It's different.

It's different.Totally agree, but one thing that struck me was all the Twitter posts saying the 2018 rotation was set with Castillo, Mahle, and Romano and adding Homer and either Disco or Finnegan in there. My problem is that the first three (with the notable exception of Luis) are still unproven. We don't know yet whether Homer is back and we have to do a lot of thinking about Mahle and Sal. This really bothers me. Seeing Sal go 8 innings against the Bucs is no test of anything. They are tanking, and we may pass them in the standings. So, I just want to send out a warning that the rotation is not set and lots of time before next April is still out there, and lots of questions exist. Yeah, I want it all to work out, but I've wanted that for four years.
