RIP.

Great leader for college sports. He also integrated basketball in the SEC. His Alabama teams in the late 60's and early 70's had the first blacks to play. His 1973 team had the first all black starting lineup in the SEC. He may have saved UK basketball after he was hired as AD. UK was in the throws of scandal and NCAA banishment. He hired Pitino and UK came back quicker and better than ever. If not for that hire its untelling when or ever UK basketball would have ever been back in the limelight. He was also President of USA basketball in the 90's and help get together the 1992 Dream Team. Just a very well respected and great leader for college sports. UK was lucky to have him. RIP CM Newton.

As an aside, Perry Wallace of Vanderbilt was actually the first African-American basketball player in the SEC.

One thing that a lot of people forget about Newton... He was probably a better baseball player than basketball. He was one of the last guys off the bench of the basketball team but was a primary starting pitcher on some pretty good baseball teams.

Sea Ray is a prophet. Last yr I was catching a lot of flak from JoJo and this is what transpired:

October 13th Jojo. Mark it. We'll see you then

If that's the peg you want to hang your hat on concerning Pruitt than you're in it in a bad way.

My "peg" is to judge things on the field. Let's see where the team stands on the field.

You'd better stock up on tp because it'll be in short supply in Auburn.
I'm a Vols fan and there is no way I am looking forward to that Auburn game. The Vols will get murdered.

Rather than continue to argue with JJ, I took the path of waiting for the facts to unfold on the field and today that's exactly what happened to the tune of 30-24, Vols.

Too bad JJ's not posting these days but these are the facts

How's the recruiting going for ut commit QB Adrian Martinez?

Funny you should ask. He led his winless team to another loss vs powerhouse Northwestern today, throwing an INT in OT. I'll stick with Jarrett Guarantano

Unbelievable to think UK will be playing for the East championship next week. A team that has no offense but great defense. I'm not sure they can overcome that to beat UGA but it's still heady stuff for a UK football fan that has only seen one great season for UK in my lifetime,1977.
I believe if UK wins they will clinch a berth in the SEC Championship no matter how they do against Tennessee. They would have the tie breakers on UGA and UF because they beat both. Still, they are good shape for 10 wins. Not bad for a traditionally bad program.

They were on probation in 1977 so no bowl. They had a choice to take the ban after the 76 or 77 season and they chose 77. They made a bowl game in 1976 for the first time in over 20 years so naturally they took that. If they knew they would have too it then.

UK crashed back to earth today. I was afraid that would happen. They got lucky last week. There offense is just awful and the defense may just be merely good and not great like we hoped. UGA had their way against UK's defense most of the day. Next week will be hard to win too. This has to be a big letdown for them and I think they may be pretty beat up after this game.

Tennessee is better than their record indicates and Kentucky hasn’t won there since 1984. I have no doubt Kentucky can win there this year but wouldn’t be surprised if Pruitts team breaks through.

Middle Tennessee and Louisville though, yeah 9-3 is the floor right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if Petrino isn’t fired before the Kentucky game.

Sea Ray was dead on. To think that a month or so ago we were debating what major program would steal UK's coach. This is not a stellar Tennessee team to say the least yet they ran away with this game.

As bad as UT is I will give them kudos for beating two highly ranked teams at the time. Now let's get Bowl eligible

It’s not hard to gameplan against Kentucky. Load up the box on Snell. Eddie Gran is so conservative and I think afraid of what Terry Wilson might do that it’s completely hindered the offense. They were lucky to beat Vanderbilt and Missouri.

I’d like to see Stoops open up QB competition for the next two games. This team needs a spark and Turnover Terry isn’t giving it.

I agree. The offense was Snell right, Snell left, toss to Snell. The receivers had hands of stone and the placekicker was nothing more than high school quality. I can't imagine how UK ever got ranked so high or how fortune shined upon them in order to go 7-1. That is not a good team in any way shape or form.

Well the SEC IS the top football conference in all of college football, no question there.

Granted Tennessee still has some work to do to become Bowl eligible but what do you think about an Indiana vs Tenn Bowl game this year? They seem to like SEC/Big Ten matchups. As a UT fan I love facing the Big Ten in football

You could see that UK loss coming from a mile away. Their offense has been non existent since the 2nd half of the South Carolina game. Their defense was really good but I think some injuries have taken its toll and a defense just can't keep sustaining a team. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they lose to MTSU this week. That's just the way UK football is. I know I have followed them for over 40 years.

Kentucky actually fixed the kicking problem. What sucks is they had to burn a redshirt to fix it. Chance Poore has been an improvement over Miles Butler.

I’m not questioning how they got to where they did. They went to Gainesville and ended the losing streak to Florida and then followed it up by beating a ranked Mississippi State team. The problem is after the South Carolina game teams have started making adjustments once they realized Kentucky’s kryptonite was QB and could key in on stopping the running game. The coaching staff (namely Eddie Gran) hasn’t made any adjustments and that’s where Kentucky is now.

The defense has had two of its better players not named Josh Allen playing with club hands. You can’t tell me that hasn’t had an impact.

I picked 'em to lose this week. There's no Orange glasses for me. I never thought Missouri was a good matchup for them.

I said at the beginning of the yr that a good season would be 6-6 and a Bowl bid. It's not too much to ask for them to beat Vanderbilt next week and do exactly that. They'll have nearly half the fans at that game in Nashville. If they can't win that one then they don't deserve a Bowl bid.

Kentucky won easily. It was a two score game and that's after a late 4th qtr TD by MTSU. I grant you that they still underachieved but that's because they're not very good. Just look at what happened to UK's previous opponent in Knoxville yesterday? This is a historically bad UT Volunteer team and they beat UK easily. And I'm supposed to believe this is a good UK team? I'm not seeing it. To their credit, they managed to eek out a win vs FL. Other than that it's been typical UK football.

They didn't win easily. If MTSU hadn't have given them two TD's in the first qtr they may well have lost. It was a one TD game with under 10 minutes to go. For UK this is a great team. But on the national scale they aren't on par at all with the top tier teams. Their defense was great early on but injuries have slowed them down quite a bit. Two of their better defensive players are playing with broken hands. Still if they can beat a very poor UL team they should go to a fairly major bowl. For UK football that's tremendous and I will take that anytime.
