I have no idea why the players in the NFLPA don't cap individual salaries. Let's say the max is 15 million. In SF's case they would have an extra 12 million to spend on the 52 other players.

From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Vikings hired Eagles QBs coach John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator.
It's a coup for the Vikings, as DeFilippo had reportedly been "leaning toward" staying in Philadelphia after being passed over for the Bears and Cardinals' head-coaching vacancies. On the rise since a well-regarded showing as the Browns' offensive coordinator in 2015, DeFilippo has earned raves for his work with Carson Wentz. DeFilippo is inheriting excellent talent at running back and receiver, but doesn't yet know which quarterback he will be coaching in 2018. It stands to reason DeFilippo will employ some of the play-calling optimization techniques he learned under Doug Pederson in Philly.

San Fran is run by idiots. They gave up a high 2nd to get a guy with 2 starts and about to hit FA. He has a good stretch and really had them over the barrel. I fully expect him to be the next Matt Cassel once NFL teams get some actual tape on him.

If they wanted to negotiate bigger pay days then you...
A) Make a larger portion of it guaranteed
B) Cap the total value.
Players get more money with that trade off without making the contract guaranteed like other sports.

I've heard the players are the ones who are against guaranteed deals. The theory being they would like the potential of more than the probability of less. I certainly can't blame the owners for not wanting them. Why pay a guy for 5 years when in all likelihood he only lasts 1 or 2?
Bob Sheed
02-09-2018, 01:36 PM
The problem with deals that big, is the salary cap itself. At some point, a QB has to ask himself if he would rather have 30 million dollars a year for 5 years, with no one to throw to and no one protecting his blindside, or if he'd rather have 15 million a year, with a few targets to throw to and a halfway decent LT watching his back.

That's exactly WHY they should do it. Only a handful of players get big contracts. Cap those salaries at 15 million, or 10 million, and the little guys all get a big raise. I'm suggesting the little guys fight the big guys.

This makes sense, but "making sense" and "the Dolphins" more often than not don't belong in the same sentence, such as "what were they thinking when they signed Suh in the first place tk that ridiculous that made zero sense at the time, and hindsight says that assessment then was correct.
I gotta feel for my friends who are Dolphins fans.
From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports "confidants of [Dolphins owner] Stephen Ross" informed him that Ross "was ready to move on" from DT Ndamukong Suh.
Suh is heading into the fourth year of a six-year, $114 million mega-deal and is set to count a whopping $26.1 million against the Dolphins' salary cap. That's almost $9 million more than the next-closest defensive tackle. Suh just turned 31 last month but remains a legitimate game-wrecking force inside. However, the Dolphins need a lot more than Suh before they start competing for Super Bowls. Designating Suh a post-June 1 cut would save Miami $19 million versus the cap.

Glennon looked terrible in Chicago, but there were major issues that worked against him. Now that his price will be ultra cheap thanks to last year's performance, this woild be a very good Quarterback to put behind a young Quarterback who has job security, but the team needs a Quarterback to win a couple games if necessary. Teams like Tampa Bay (he's back), Tennessee, San Francisco, Jacksonville, Tennessee, even Cincinnati if the Bengals trade McCarron, Dallas, Indianapolis, Houston. The list is longer than this. It was a bad situation in Chicago
ESPN Bears reporter Jeff Dickerson believes the "writing is clearly on the wall" that Mike Glennon won't be back with the team for the 2018 season.
The Bears have already paid Glennon $16 million, and the plan is for that to be all he gets from them before he's due a $2.5 million roster bonus later this offseason. For $16 million, Glennon made four starts for Chicago, completing 93-of-140 passes (66.4%) for 833 yards (6.0 YPA) and a 4:5 TD:INT ratio while losing three fumbles. The Bears aren't going to pay him $15 million to be a backup.

The RAMS have taken over the NFC West. I can't believe there are still people who get paid to write about sports that thought last season was a blip for the RAMS, and that they thought the Seahawks will just retool and take back the Division.
The RAMS blew past the Seahawks last year and have now lapped them after acquiring Marcus Peters, as good as it gets for a Secondary player, from the Chiefs today.
I would love to know what that feeling is like in football when you have an Owner committed to winning. Just once.
The dominant teams in the NFC (in no particular order):
Minnesota
Green Bay (Aaron Rodgers has been the best player in the NFL, hands down, for the last 8 years,...Tom Brady has been 2nd to him,...witha new G.M. we'll see if Rogers can get any help)
Philadelphia
Los Angeles
These are all 11-14 win teams.
The NFC South is strong, but there isn't a dominant team there. Atlanta, Carolina and New Orleans all have the potential for 12 wins, but it's hard to get through the division without 3 losses. The other Wild Card should come from here.
Pete Carroll will start to hear firing rumors.

Former Dolphins and 49ers OL Jonathan Martin has been taken into police custody after posting a disturbing image on Instagram of a shotgun and ammunition, threatening "suicide" and/or "revenge".
Martin was the famous victim of "Bullygate" while with the Dolphins back in 2013. In the photo he posted on Friday, Martin wrote, "When you're a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge." In the photo, there was a shotgun and several rounds of shells lying on a bed, and Martin tagged former Dolphins teammates OG Richie Incognito and C Mike Pouncey. Martin also tagged two others, presumably from his old high school, while also tagging the #MiamiDolphins and #HarvardWestlake, his high school. Harvard Westlake subsequently shut down its campus after seeing the image. Martin was then taken into custody shortly after. The 28-year-old hasn't played in the NFL since 2014 and clearly has some mental issues. Thankfully, it didn't turn ugly.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs and Rams are "in the final stages of talks" on a trade that will send LCB Marcus Peters to Los Angeles.
The deal is expected to be agreed to as early as Friday, barring an unexpected snag. The trade can't become official until the new league year opens on March 14, but it appears the Rams have their new No. 1 corner. With Trumaine Johnson set for free agency, Peters will likely slide into his spot on defense. No. 2 CB Kayvon Webster is still recovering from a late-season Achilles' tear. Peters irked many in the Chiefs' organization at times, but there's no denying he's a top 5-10 corner and is first among all cornerbacks in interceptions (19) since entering the league in 2015. Peters has two more years of team control on his rookie contract.

NFL.com's Kimberly Jones considers Wyoming QB Josh Allen the quarterback who "helped himself the most" at the Combine.
After measuring in at 6-foot-5, 237 pounds, Allen put on a show with his arm and tested well athletically. Allen's arm and athleticism have never really been in question. It's his accuracy that's the issue. For his part, Allen says he's been "working on his footwork and 'toning down' his stride length." It's rare for quarterbacks to truly overhaul their mechanics. Allen is going to be high risk, high reward, likely in the top 10 and perhaps much higher.

That presumably means Sherman has already declined to take a pay cut on his scheduled $11 million salary. We doubt Sherman will be terribly interested in re-signing with the team that cut him. 49ers signed WR Marquise Goodwin to a three-year, $20.3 million extension through 2021.
It includes $10 million guaranteed. The 49ers signed Goodwin to a bargain two-year, $8 million contract last March and he responded by posting new career bests across the board, coming within 38 yards of 1,000. He seamlessly slid in as the 49ers' No. 1 receiver after Pierre Garcon was lost for the season and showed excellent chemistry with Jimmy Garoppolo. Goodwin is unlikely to ever be a true No. 1, but he's proven he can be an excellent No.2. 2018 will be Goodwin's age-28 campaign.

Giants acquired ILB Alec Ogletree and a 2019 seventh-round pick from the Rams in exchange for 2018 fourth- and sixth-round picks.
The Rams just signed Ogletree to a four-year, $42 million extension in October but evidently didn't like his fit in DC Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense. L.A. was gashed by the run last season, and playing Ogletree and Mark Barron, a pair of converted safeties, at inside linebacker was a big reason for that. Both are extremely athletic, but they were too light and got pushed around by offensive linemen. The Rams recoup the fourth-rounder they sent to K.C. in the Marcus Peters deal with this move and clear a bunch of cash off the books for future long-term deals. Linebacker was a massive need for the Giants.

From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Eagles acquired DL Michael Bennett and a 2018 seventh-round pick from the Seahawks in exchange for WR Marcus Johnson and a 2018 fifth-round pick.
The rich get richer. Eagles EVP Howie Roseman may be the most aggressive decision-maker in the biz, and he adds Bennett to an already-loaded defensive line. The Seahawks were dangling Bennett to, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, "quiet things down a little bit" and clear cap space. Bennett has long been outspoken on social issues, something the Eagles aren't afraid of in the least bit, considering they employ Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long, and Torrey Smith. And still won the Super Bowl. How about that? Bennett is 32 but remains an absolute asset. He and Fletcher Cox will likely man the interior on passing downs, with Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett coming off the edges. Fellow DLs Timmy Jernigan and Chris Long are also in the mix. Good luck to opposing offensive linemen. This likely spells the end for DE Vinny Curry in Philly. The draw for Seattle was the fifth-rounder. Johnson, 24 in August, caught five passes for 45 yards across 10 games for the Super Bowl champs last season and is a special teams cog. He blazed a 4.37 forty at his 2016 Pro Day.

Absent a long-term deal, Bell is expected to again skip training camp. Both sides have said they want to get something done, but the high price of the tag and current league-wide running back economics are going to make talks extremely tricky.

Bears assigned the transition tag to CB Kyle Fuller.
The tag is worth $12.971 million, providing $2 million in savings from the franchise tag. It's not exclusive, but gives the Bears the right of first refusal should Fuller sign an offer sheet elsewhere. With plenty of cap space, the Bears will almost certainly be matching any offer Fuller gets. If they ended up passing, they would receive zero compensation if Fuller walked. The Bears bungled the overall situation by not exercising Fuller's fifth-year team option last spring.

The deal includes $9 million guaranteed. Gano was going to be franchise tagged absent a long-term deal. Headed into his age-31 season, Gano has been the Panthers' kicker since 2012. He's an acceptable 81.7 percent field goal kicker for his career, though he was excellent in 2017, draining 29-of-30 attempts. Keeping Joyner became a priority after he experienced a breakout 2017 following his full-time switch to safety. The tag is worth $11.287 million for safeties. The move means Sammy Watkins is now headed to the open market. The Rams have until July 16 to work out a long-term agreement with Joyner. The Rams will not assign the franchise tag to WR Sammy Watkins, letting him become an unrestricted free agent. The Rams tagged S Lamarcus Joyner before Tuesday's deadline, allowing Watkins to hit the open market when free agency begins March 14. The Rams supposedly want to keep Watkins, but they have yet to be aggressive in that department. If the Bengals were half-way serious and had one iota of a competitive nature, they'd raise the bar of that franchise (wouldn't take much raising) and get themselves a quality Center. They still should be looking to rob from within their own Division, but Richburg would also work. The statement it would make to the players, let alone the fans, would be one of action instead of the usual banter and coachspeak that comes through the mouth of Marvin Lewis.

Solder's preference is to stay with New England and while he could take somewhat of a hometown discount to make that happen, Howe cautions that the Patriots must field a "competitive" offer or risk losing him. Per Howe, Solder can probably expect an offer in the range of $52 million over four years or two years for $28 million if he's looking to sign a short-term deal. If Solder leaves, LaAdrian Waddle and Cameron Fleming would be the leading in-house candidates to replace him at left tackle.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports expects the Cardinals to move on from DB Tyrann Mathieu this offseason.
La Canfora came to this conclusion "based on everything" he heard at the Combine this week. Mathieu saw his play decline in 2017 and is owed a $5 million roster bonus on March 16. Pewter Report's Scott Reynolds threw out Tampa Bay as a possible landing spot for the Honey Badger should he become available. Jason Licht, who now serves as Bucs' GM, was instrumental in drafting Mathieu when he was VP of player personnel for the Cardinals.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Dolphins have acquired DE Robert Quinn from the Rams.
The Rams are getting back a fourth-rounder in April's draft while the two sides are also exchanging sixth-round picks. Quinn was a first-team All-Pro in 2013 and amassed a whopping 40 sacks between 2012-2014. He missed 15 games in 2015 and 2016 but played in all 16 last season, notching 8.5 sacks as a stand-up 3-4 linebacker. He'll go back to his traditional 4-3 end spot in Miami, joining Cameron Wake and 2017 first-rounder Charles Harris. Quinn, 28 in May, is signed through 2019. The move saves the Rams a much-needed $11.4 million against the cap but creates a gaping edge-rusher hole.

Jets released RE Muhammad Wilkerson.
Wilkerson earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2013 and 2015 before signing a five-year, $86 million deal in July 2016. Once he was gifted all that cash, Wilkerson seemed to mail it in, routinely showing up late for team meetings, giving questionable effort on Sundays, and failing to stay out of the trainer's room. The Jets suspended him for one game in December. This move was a lock to come down the chute this offseason and saves the Jets $11 million versus the cap. Following Thursday's release of DeMarco Murray, third-year pro Derrick Henry is now locked in as the Titans' lead back.
Locked into a 2017 timeshare with an ineffective Murray, Henry was up and down, but generally excelled with bigger workloads. He was one of the league's best clock-killing backs, punishing defenses in the second half. He averaged 5.1 yards per carry after the break as opposed to 3.1 before. Henry is still a question mark in the passing game, but should have at least the first two downs on lockdown. He's a potential first-round pick in fantasy leagues.

Rams acquired CB Aqib Talib from the Broncos in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
It's the Rams' second trade for a corner in two weeks, and gives DC Wade Phillips a veteran frontline starter to pair with volatile, young pro Marcus Peters. The Broncos had decided that 32-year-old Talib was no longer worth his $11 million salary — the trade terms confirm the move is a salary dump — but he remained one of the league's better corners in 2017. Durable, Talib has remained extremely consistent. He's reuniting with Phillips after two years together in Denver. The Rams have done an excellent job of rebuilding their cornerback corps on the fly.

The deal includes $55 million guaranteed and keeps Evans under contract through 2023. In terms of annual salary, this makes Evans the second-highest-paid receiver in football behind future Hall of Famer Antonio Brown. Evans is coming off a down year in 2017, but still topped 1,000 yards receiving for the fourth time in as many seasons. 49ers signed CB Richard Sherman, formerly of the Seahawks, to a three-year contract.
It took Sherman just over 24 hours to land a new team after being let go by the Seahawks on Friday. There was some thought he would have to settle for a one-year, prove-it deal coming off an Achilles injury, but obviously the Niners had no qualms about Sherman's health. The 29-year-old has been one of the league's best corners since arriving as a fifth-round pick in 2011 and gives San Francisco's secondary a much-needed boost. It's a homecoming of sorts for Sherman, who played collegiately at Stanford. By staying in the NFC West, Sherman will get to suit up against his former team twice a year.

He led the league in interceptions in 2016 and was Pro Football Focus' No. 1 cover corner last season, a year after checking in at No. 7. Yahoo's Charles Robinson confirmed Schefter's report. The Broncos reportedly decided against committing to Kirk Cousins, who would undoubtedly command a mega-deal. Perhaps Denver also realized that Cousins wasn’t coming there. The Broncos have been linked to Keenum throughout the offseason since the 30-year-old was first signed by Denver senior personnel advisor Gary Kubiak as an UDFA when the two were together with the Texans. This shouldn’t preclude the Broncos from using the No. 5 overall pick on a quarterback.

The Jets also re-signed Josh McCown to a one-year, $10 million deal on Tuesday.
McCown has reportedly been informed he'll be the Jets' 2018 starter, but McCown is 38 and is already a known commodity. The Jets will again continue their rebuild this year, so seeing what Bridgewater has after essentially two years away with a knee injury makes more sense. The Jets hold the No. 6 overall pick in April's draft. Bringing back McCown and adding Bridgewater on one-year pacts shouldn't keep them from using that pick on a passer if they view him as a franchise quarterback. McClain is a reliable reporter, so this has merit.
From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports the Texans are "seriously interested" in free agent DB Tyrann Mathieu.
Mathieu would be a big get for the Texans, who featured one of the league's worst secondaries last year. Houston already made a splash by poaching Aaron Colvin from Jacksonville and can go for the jugular by reeling in Mathieu. Still just 25, the Honey Badger was let go by Arizona on Wednesday after refusing a pay cut. He was a first-team All-Pro as recently as 2015.

Yes, but I say skip the sequels.
So the final QB domino falls. McCarron does go to Buffalo, and with a 2 year deal he will be the bridge QB to whoever they get in draft. Only Minnesota signed a non-placeholder, and so after that they traded for their backup in Simian.
Minnesota - Cousins, Simien
Buffalo - Draftee, McCarron
Arizona - Draftee, Bradford
Cleveland - Draftee, Taylor
Jets - Draftee - Bridgewater
Denver - Draftee - Keenum
So that means at least 5 teams are going to be looking for a possible franchise QB in the draft.

From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Ryan Grant's four-year, $29 million contract with the Ravens has been voided after he failed his physical, sending him back to free agency.
Grant's deal — which included $14.5 million guaranteed — was widely criticized as an overpay, and this seems like an underhanded tactic by the Ravens to get out of it. It's extremely similar to what happened between the Raiders and Rodger Saffold in 2014. Suspiciously, the news came soon after it was reported the Ravens were interested in Michael Crabtree, who was released on Thursday. 27-year-old Grant, who has never posted more than 573 yards in a season, now heads back to a market where he could struggle to get even half the guaranteed money he had landed in Baltimore.

Raiders signed WR Jordy Nelson, formerly of the Packers, to a two-year, $15 million contract.
As expected, the Raiders cut Michael Crabtree and his $7.5 million in salary and bonuses for 2018 and gave it to Nelson, who gets $13 million guaranteed. Nelson (33 in May) is two years older than Crabtree and looked washed with the Packers last season, though we're going to give him the benefit of the doubt for now, considering he was playing with Brett Hundley. (It didn't bother Davante Adams.) Nelson will be the starter opposite Amari Cooper, who coach Jon Gruden said will be the focal point of the offense. Consider Nelson a WR3 for now.

Vikings signed DT Sheldon Richardson, formerly of the Seahawks, to a one-year contract.
Obviously this is a huge get for the Vikings, who already made a splash by signing Kirk Cousins to a three-year deal earlier this week. Richardson was phenomenal last year in his lone season with Seattle, taking home PFF's No. 10 pass-rushing grade among defensive tackles. The Seahawks wanted him back but the allure of joining a legitimate Super Bowl contender in Minnesota was too much to overcome. With Richardson off to the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the Seahawks will turn their attention to ex-Vikings DT Tom Johnson, who is slated for a visit next week.

Packers signed CB Kyle Fuller to a multi-year offer sheet.
Green Bay is trying to poach Fuller from division-rival Chicago, which presently has Fuller's rights via the transition tag. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Bears "have planned to match any offer" Fuller gets. If the Packers structure Fuller's deal to make it difficult for the Bears to match, however, Chicago would receive zero compensation, and wouldn't even be eligible for a compensatory pick in 2019. The Bears have five days to match the Packers' offer.

Raiders signed CB Rashaan Melvin to a one-year, $6.5 million contract.
Melvin was one of the bright spots for the Colts last year, intercepting three passes and playing solid coverage before missing six games to a wrist injury. He was one of the top corners remaining in free agency. This is a good deal for Oakland, with Melvin getting significantly less money and term than Aaron Colvin. Melvin will help replace the losses of T.J. Carrie, Sean Smith and David Amerson.

Eagles released DE Vinny Curry.
The move was time-sensitive as $5 million of Curry's $9 million base salary would have been guaranteed on Sunday. The Eagles tried convincing Curry to accept a pay cut but the two sides could never reach a compromise. Curry probably saw the writing on the wall after Philadelphia acquired Michael Bennett from Seattle earlier this month. The 29-year-old dominated last year, earning PFF's No. 10 grade among 4-3 defensive ends. He should attract widespread interest on the open market.

Okafor visited the Bucs this week but is coming back to New Orleans on a deal worth "up to" $10 million. The 27-year-old tore his Achilles' in November and is likely to miss much of the offseason before returning sometime during training camp. They matched Green Bay's offer sheet. Fuller will make $18 million guaranteed, $5 million more than he would have made under the transition tag. This was fully expected from Chicago, who would have got no compensation if they let Fuller sign with the Packers. Fuller is now one of the highest paid corners in the league at $14 million annually. He's signed through his age-30 season.

Texans signed DB Tyrann Mathieu, formerly of the Cardinals, to a one-year contract.
J.J. Watt put the full-court press on with a recruiting pitch and was able to seal the deal for Houston. Mathieu was cut by the Cardinals earlier this week after he refused to restructure his contract. Mathieu will look to rehab his value in Houston and hit the market next year. He's still just 25 and can play all over the back of the defense at safety, nickel, and even dime linebacker. The Texans have had one of the best weeks in the league, adding Mathieu, CB Aaron Colvin, OG Zach Fulton, and OG Senio Kelemete. OL and the secondary were huge needs.

Rams re-signed C John Sullivan to a two-year, $10 million contract.
Sullivan flirted with the Giants and Redskins this week but was likely only doing so to get the Rams to up their offer. He revived his career last season in L.A. under coach Sean McVay, starting every game and receiving plus marks from Pro Football Focus for his run blocking. It's a key re-signing for the Rams.
Lions signed RB LeGarrette Blount, formerly of the Eagles, to a one-year contract.
This backfield has a bunch of bodies but no clear lead guy. Blount reunites with new coach Matt Patricia, who was on the Patriots' staff when Blount was in New England. He figures to be the favorite for early-down and goal-line work with the Lions, with Theo Riddick still the preferred pass-down back. Ameer Abdullah is left in the cold. We wouldn't be shocked if he was dealt.

From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Bucs signed C Ryan Jensen, formerly of the Ravens, to a four-year, $42 million contract.
The deal comes with $22 million guaranteed. Jensen graded as a top-10 center last year, but this is an overpay for a 27-year-old with one full season as a starter. The Bucs had one of the worst rushing offenses in the league in 2017, so Jensen will upgrade their interior run blocking. Jensen's signing should push Ali Marpet back to right guard.

From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Cardinals signed G/T Justin Pugh, formerly of the Giants, to a five-year, $45 million contract.
The Colts wanted to get Pugh in for a visit, but they couldn't get him to leave Arizona. The Giants never seemed interested in bringing Pugh back after splurging on new LT Nate Solder. In Arizona, Pugh fills a gigantic hole on a Cardinals' line that is not only old, but wasn't any good. Pugh can play either guard spot or right tackle. Last year's RG Earl Watford is a free agent, or the Cardinals could simply choose to cut overpaid and bad RT Jared Veldheer.

Suh was reportedly very intrigued by the idea of teaming up with Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers while playing for DC Wade Phillips. It's a way for Suh to sort of rehab his value on a one-year deal as a 31-year-old. Even at his age, Suh remains one of the very best interior linemen, even if the counting stats weren't there for him in 2017. Look for Phillips to get the most out of him, allowing him to one-gap and attack upfield. This Rams defensive front and secondary is absolutely stacked; they now just need edge rushers.

OK. Then must just be doing whatever they can to maximize whatever the 2019 draft happens to yield. Can't see how they win a single game in 2018, while the next closest team that has a chance of even getting as few as three wins isn't anyone I can think of right now. Unless that QB is Baker Mayfield or Lamar Jackson, they don’t have the ammo to move for the big three.
They could acquire more assets depending on how much they get from Gronk if anyone decides to take a chance on him.

So, Goff and the Rams were sampling the goods before the trade...
From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
NFL Network's Steve Wyche reports the Rams plan to sign contract-year WR Brandin Cooks to an extension prior to the season.
Jared Goff and Cooks have been training together this offseason and share the same agent, so perhaps there have already been discussions with Cooks' representation. He's a West Coast guy who grew up in Stockton, Cali. and played his college ball at Oregon State. Cooks won't come cheap, however, and should command around the $16 million per year Sammy Watkins got. But all signs point to the two sides hammering out a deal after the Rams gave up a first-rounder.

After storming onto the NFL scene last year in what would have been a ROY, and possible MVP season, before succombing to a season-ending injury, Watson looks to have recovered fast enough to be fully prepared for the 2018 season.
Luck is supposedly healthy with a real HC in charge.
Jacksonville will be better than their near Super Bowl appearance season from last year.
Mariota will be a year and nine months removed from his broken leg with improvements throughout the franchise.
The AFC South will be a weekly drama, and the toughest Division (maybe NFC South) in the NFL. I said this last year, but was lied to about Luck's health, while overestimating Mariota's recovery from his broken leg.
From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Texans coach Bill O'Brien told PFT Live Deshaun Watson (knee) could get in some work during OTAs.
"I like where he is right now. I don’t think he’ll be able to do much on the field in the beginning of the offseason program. By the time OTAs roll around he may be able to do a few things." This isn't the first time the Texans have suggested Watson could get in limited OTA reps. Watson is five months removed from ACL surgery, but he's recovering ahead of schedule. Even if the Texans hold him out all offseason, Watson is on track for training camp.

Green Bay Packers receiver Trevor Davis was arrested Sunday and charged with making "criminal threats" after joking about a bomb at the Los Angeles International Airport, according to LAX police.
Public information officer Rob Pedregon told ESPN on Monday that Davis was taken into custody and released pending a May 3 court appearance.
"Yesterday, Trevor Davis checked in at the Hawaiian Airlines ticket counter and was asked the usual questions about whether he was carrying any aerosol cans, knives, weapons or explosives," Pedregon said. "Davis turned to his female companion and asked if she remembered to pack the explosives. He was then taken into custody and booked."

From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
According to Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman, coach Jon Gruden has "effectively replaced" Reggie McKenzie as the Raiders' general manager.
It's been pretty clear to see when looking at the Raiders' offseason; the team has taken on far more risky players than McKenzie ever did in his time calling the shots, and Gruden is going all out in adding a ton of veterans. Per Freeman, Gruden has "quietly consolidated power to the point where he's effectively the head coach, general manager, CEO and just about everything else." No other coach outside of maybe Bill Belichick has this much say in an organization, and we're not sure what Gruden has done to earn it. If he wins in Oakland it won't matter, but things could get ugly in a hurry if the Raiders don't turn this around immediately. That 10-year, $100 million contract -- the largest in NFL coaching history -- may prove to be a colossal mistake.

I've got to agree about all of this, except I was convinced when they simply contemplated the idea, even if Gruden worked for free, that they were nuts for thinking Gruden has any idea how to win in the NFL.

Hunter Henry suffered a torn ACL at Chargers OTAs on Tuesday.
What a devastating blow to a player who was projected to play a massive role in a Chargers offense without Antonio Gates in it for the first time in 15 years. Henry is obviously done for the season, and it leaves Virgil Green currently atop the depth chart. It’s fair to wonder if the Bolts will turn back to Gates after they told him they were moving on earlier this offseason. However, Gates showed he has little to nothing left in the tank. Perhaps the Chargers will use more three- and four-wide sets with their abundance of receivers, including Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Tyrell Williams, and Travis Benjamin. GM Tom Telesco may also explore the trade market.

From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
NFL.com's Mike Silver reports the Browns offered the Eagles the No. 35 overall pick for Nick Foles before eventually trading for Tyrod Taylor.
Per Silver, the Eagles consulted Foles, who said he wished to remain in Philadelphia. The sides later reached a reworked contract that gave Foles 2018 incentives and the option to leave in 2019. It's nice to see a team do right by a player, but the Eagles should have sold high on their Super Bowl hero. As it is, he's excellent quarterback insurance as Carson Wentz completes his recovery from a torn ACL.

Eagles released SLB Mychal Kendricks.
Kendricks was designated as a post-June 1 release, clearing $6 million in cap space while leaving behind $1.6 million in dead money. The move comes after the Eagles (again) failed to find a trade partner for their two-down thumper. Kendricks wanted to play all three downs. Going on 28, Kendricks had one of his best seasons in 2018. Provided he's healthy — Kendricks is recovering from an ankle scope — he won't be on the open market for long. Linebacker is a position of need for the Eagles.

Hmmmm the Bengals are flush with good tight ends. Could they get a third for Eifert?
Eifert is the only one who has proven himself. If he's healthy, the Offense is Top-5 and scary and unstoppable. The window is open for the Bengals if he's healthy enough to be traded. He's needed in the playoffs. Can't trade him.
Bengals need all their TE's until they can find two Tackles who can run-block and pass-protect, as a TE will be needed to help on every play. Yes, two TE's means single-back AND no Slot. One TE means choosing between a Slot and a 2nd Back, or a 3-Wide set with no Back. Until the OT problem is solved, we need 3 TE's, all of whom need to block and at least be a threat as a Receiver.
Would love to put Eifert out Wide crossing over the Middle, have Ross scaring the bejesious out of them streaking from the Slot, with A.J. running an out-and-go route from the right, and Gio escaping to the right flat. Give Dalton 2.6-2.8 seconds to release, and he'll find a 25+-yd completion or a pass interference on that play. But, it needs the C, LT and RT all keeping him clean for what is really, a short time for most QB's, but a long time for Dalton.

Dwight Clark broke my heart when made "The Catch". At the time and until the mid to late 90's I was as big a Cowboys fan you could have. His catch was sensational and not much a DB could have done about it. It capped off one of the greatest games in NFL history. Clark ended up being one of Montana's go to guys, after Rice, when he needed a big play. Just a very good, solid receiver for the 49er's. He died of ALS which may have been caused by the many concussions he had. We will never know that for sure. All I know he died way too young at 61. RIP Dwight Clark.

Excellent post.
IIRC, Clark was a really good WR for Clemson, and I'm surprised that he lasted until the 10th round. It's also surprising that Joe Montana lasted until the 3rd round in said draft. Bill Walsh at his peak was not only an excellent coach, but a great evaluator of talent.
But it took the 49ers, who were gawd-awful in the late 70's -- after trading RB Delvin Williams to Miami for WR Freddie Soloman, IIRC, and traded for O.J Simpson, who was done at that point -- to rebound.

The Rams have been ordered to pay free agent RB Reggie Bush $12.5 million in damages stemming from his 2015 torn ACL suffered at the Edward Jones Dome.
Then with the 49ers, Bush was pushed out of bounds and at the then-St. Louis Rams' home stadium and slipped on what he called a "concrete ring of death." It was an exposed surface of concrete on the sideline where Bush wiped out, his legs coming out from under him, tearing his ACL. He recorded just 12 carries in 2016 with the Bills and was out of the league last year. The injury effectively ended his career. The now-L.A. Rams will have to foot the bill.

I love what Lynch is doing in San Francisco. From his first day, I think he's operated as a Top-12 G.M.
He took over such a huge mess from Harbaugh and Kelly that it's amazing how quickly the turnaround has been.
But, only so much can be accomplished in one year.
Jonathan Cooper must have unbelievable measurables because so many teams think they can fix his problems. They can't.
San Francisco had another fantastic draft, adding two anchors for the next 8 years to their O-Line. But, in the meantime, Cooper is penciled in at RG. Cooper is Greg Robinson 2.0
San Francisco will try to win games while opposing Defenses attack Cooper all game long. Eventually, Lynch will admit his mistake, cut him, and move on. But the damage will be done. They will still finish 2nd in the Division at 8-8, but Cooper will cost them a 10-win season and a shot at the playoffs. 10 wins will not be enough for some in the strong NFC to get in. Arizona may be the worst team in the NFL. Seattle is a 6-win team, with 2 wins against Arizona. The other 4 will be hard to come by. The Rams are a 6-0 team in the Division and 6-4 to 8-2 outside of it for 12-14 wins.

At $14.4 million annually, Hunter is now the league's seventh-highest-paid 4-3 end, right behind teammate RE Everson Griffen. Hunter has 19.5 sacks over the last two seasons and doesn't turn 24 until October. There is still plenty of room for growth as Hunter gets used to playing 80% of the snaps.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal includes $45 million guaranteed, easily a new record for a running back. Big bucks are always risky for runners, but Gurley is still only 24 (in August). He is getting paid for the prime years of his career. Sad news indeed. 56 is just too damn soon to say goodbye to this world.
Sparano's legacy, in my eyes: Having the stones to incorporate the Wildcat in '08. It may not sound like much, but doing so opened up the floodgates to more innovative *and risk-taking) offensive mentality, at a time when NFL offenses were mostly, quite frankly, sleep inducing, play close-to-the-vest types. IMHO, I still believe that NFL offenses are not as innovative as their NCAA counterparts -- The spread doesn't translate as well to the NFL, as NCAA QBs are more running threats - but the gap is closing and we have Sparano to thank for that as he got the proverbial ball rolling.

I think Cook will be the #2 RB in Total Yards (rushing plus receiving) behind Bell, while scoring more TD's than Bell. He's my #2 overall pick.
I see: 1425 yds Rushing, 55 catches, 600 yds Receiving, 14 TD's. I saw him as a 1st Rounder last year, and he was well on his way to being a Top-5 back. Healthy, with a better line, a better Quarterback that takes one defender out of the box, and a Quarterback that gives him more scoring opportunities, and a Defense that gives him short fields to work with, and an O.C. in DeFelippo who throws to a RB often.

Singled out for praise by Aaron Rodgers during the week, Kumerow got a step and caught a 52-yard bomb in stride down the left sideline with 2:37 remaining for his score. Rodgers was spotted going wild on the bench. The fourth-year UDFA still has a long ways to go to secure a roster spot, but he's making an early case in a receiver corps that has snaps and targets for the taking.
Aaron Rodgers repeatedly praised WR Jake Kumerow following Tuesday's practice.
"I said, 'When you're out there, I'm coming your way,'" Rodgers said of Kumerow. "I have confidence in him. He's in the right spot all the time, he makes contested catches, finishes the right way. He practices like a pro. It's a reminder to those other guys, this is what it looks like." Kumerow went undrafted in 2015 and earned some training camp hype with the Bengals in 2016 but has never appeared in a regular-season game. He spent last season on the practice squad in New England and Green Bay. Kumerow stands 6'4/209 and is still just 26.

Watson was only in for one series, and his only attempt was a four-yard gain by Bruce Ellington. His health is the only concern right now, however, and getting even one series in the preseason opener is a great sign.

Who the Browns passed on.....
From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Giants RB Saquon Barkley rushed 4 times for 43 yards in Thursday’s preseason game versus the Browns.
Selected with the second pick of this year’s draft, Barkley wasted no time showing off his athleticism. His first NFL touch was a 39-yard jaunt in which he reversed field, gave the impression he was going to break all the way to the right side and then made a jump cut upfield, buckling fellow first-round rookie Denzel Ward in the hole as he outraced defenders down the sideline before being forced out of bounds. He carried three more times for just four yards, but Barkley flashed his immense upside on his two drives. Barkley will look to be the Giants first 1,000-yard rusher since Ahmad Bradshaw in 2012.

Teddy Bridgewater completed 7-of-8 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason opener.
Bridgewater was the second quarterback in behind Josh McCown. He had a near-perfect debut, throwing just one incompletion in two series before giving way to Sam Darnold. Bridgewater doesn't have much of a chance to start for the Jets, but his trade value is trending up. The Jets should showcase Bridgewater more in their second preseason game.

Purely watching their game on Thurs night and as you know, I have friends in Seattle and that's what I've been told for months. They're saying they're not worried about the O-line. They're much more worried about getting Earl Thomas signed. The national pundits see the Seahawks as something along the lines of 4-12. They're seeing something like 8-8 give or take a game. Of course if by chance Russell Wilson gets hurt, all bets are off but that can be said about most NFL teams and their starting QB.

Yeah, I see the Seahawks, Bills, Bears and Cardinals all fighting for the worst team in the NFL, so I see each of them struggling to reach 6 Victories. Cardinals and Seahawks get one free victory because they play each other twice. The Bears also play the Seahawks, Cardinals and Bills. Outside of these four teams getting wins against each other, I don't see any other victories on their schedules. Seahawks' fans are pretty isolated up there and have a very small pulse on the rest of the sports world. (Same goes for Portland).
Because Buffalo only has one game against these three opponents, instead of the three that the Bears, Seahawks and Cardinals have, the Bills have a 2-game disadvantage versus these three for worst record in the 2018 season.

Seahawks have an enormous home field advantage. They'll be tough to beat in half their games. I see 6 wins as their bottom but more than likely it'll be 8 or 9 wins

I watched the QB's in the Buffalo game this week. You can see why Allen was picked. has a rocket for an arm. But he was definitely raw. Don't see him starting for a while. Part of that reason is that both McCarron and Peterman (who started) looked very good.
Base on what I saw this game I'd give the edge to Peterman. His only blemish was an interception that hit Chris Ivory in a bad place (hands) and went to a defender.

Vikings OT Rashod Hill was carted off the practice field Monday.

You don't keep the same core around for very long. NFL is still a very copy cat league. Having a qb on a reduced salary gives you flexibility with the other guys like what happened with Seattle. Once Wilson gets paid you magically don't have the funds for big time guys and you almost have to completely retool. You can't just churn over the roster and expect consistancy.

Excepting for kickers and punters usually only the QBs stick around for a significant amount of time in the NFL. Without the guaranteed contracts, it's either produce or get traded/released. There's always someone younger and/or cheaper to take their place.

The highlight was an 82-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Kumerow took advantage of some bad tackling and defensive positioning, but he was off to the races once given the window. The fourth-year UDFA now has scores of 82 and 52 yards this preseason, totaling 6/190/2. Both big performances have come since he was singled out for praise by Aaron Rodgers. ::: UPDATE :::
Packers WR Jake Kumerow has been diagnosed with a sprained SC joint in his injured shoulder.

Injuries are starting to pile up in the NFL this week. Foles has a shoulder injury as well as McCarron. Patriots' #1 pick Wynn is gone for the yr. Seahawks #1 pick just had surgery on a finger. Darrius Guice is gone for the yr and then his backup Samaje Perine went out with an ankle injury
I know you've heard it from me before but 53 players isn't nearly enough to make it through an NFL season. They need at least 60.

This makes zero sense. The Seahawks have utilized Lockett' skillset as badly as they used Jimmy Graham's, looking back, an absolutely terrible trade for them.
From Rotoworld with Rotoworld comments:
Seahawks signed WR Tyler Lockett to a three-year, $31.8 million extension through 2021.
The deal is worth a max value of $37.8 million and contains $20 million guaranteed. It's a lot of dough for a receiver who has yet to really find his game on offense. Lockett has failed to top 600 yards receiving each of the past two seasons and has just three touchdown catches over his last 31 games after scoring six as a rookie. However, Lockett has all the tools to make a leap and doesn't turn 26 for another month. He also is one of the league's most electric returners. Lockett appears locked into No. 2 receiver duties in Seattle's overhauled offense.

Just guessing here but I figured they front loaded it in order to burn through much of the cap hit this yr and next. I figured they likely had cap money to burn.
I do like the NFL because we're talking about a risk on the field to doing this. If the Dodgers signed say Bryce Harper to such a deal, there'd be no repercussion on the field for doing so. It shouldn't be a free ride. There should be a competitive price to pay.
There's also the aspect that it's Green Bay. No way we'll see the Brewers doing such a signing anytime soon.

You could have ten first round picks that won’t be as good or make the impact of Mack. This is a great trade for the Bears.
Let me break down why it’s a terrible trade for the Bears....
First round picks are the most valuable thing in the NFL besides a top 5 QB. Oakland now has multiple 1sts in two separate drafts. They’ll have the ability to add multiple top talent youth. These new players will work under extremely team friendly deals which is highly valuable in a league where so many players have to fit into a teams cap room. Oakland will also have the option of using these picks as collateral to move way up in the draft and get a blue chip player (like Mack was) and have that player on a great contract.
I’m not taking anything away from Mack, he’s arguably the best in the game. What about the Bears defense? Are they good enough around Mack for this deal to pay off? It’s gonna be a problem if this is an annual 5-8 win team with two years without 1st round picks and a DE mopping up a massive amount of cap space. From a talent standpoint I get it. Six games against Rodgers, Stanford, and Cousins requires QB pressure and Mack will provide that. It’s just a deal I’m not making unless I’m a sure fire playoff team and Mack could be the piece that brings home a Super Bowl Trophy. I’m not seeing that with the Bears and in my opinion they way overpaid.
Oakland did incredible in this deal.

I get all of that. I’d rather be the Bears right now than the Raiders. He’s one of the best three defensive players in football and someone the other team has to plan for. I think all the stuff you said is generally speaking correct, but Mack is a guy you pull the trigger for.
