DJ Petersen still with the club. I knew he’d been picked up awhile back but I was thinking he’d been let go. Guess not.

Garret ERA at 1.80 now.

Garrett K's first hitter.

Grounder to Short (played well by Pennington)

Amir K's the last hitter swinging.

Amir looking good. No gun but fast ball seems to be popping and he is changing speeds and throwing strikes.

Tucker K's swinging.

Amir gets grazed by the pitch and trots to first.

Billy K's. (this is a statement, and not a nickname)

Blandino hits one to deep CF that CF gets a glove on, but can't corral. Goes for triple and Amir scores.

Suarez grounds out.

Honest question, Blandino plays 2B, 3B, and SS....looks pretty quick on the triple he just hit to dead center....could he play CF with work in the minors?

Sac attempt by pitcher but goes to second and runner is out.

No gun, and they haven't said anything...but pretty good as far as I can tell.

Schebler hits it hard, but right into teeth of shift... one down.

Duvall K's looking on nice curve.

Elizalde flies out.

What Jax said - no gun but the fastball has a lot of life and they’ve been late on it.

Garrett starts the inning with pitch 39.

First hitter, check swing bouncer to 1st.

Iglesias warming up.

Next guy hit higher bounce to Pennnigton. They give him an error. Probably because no hits had been given up. It was a do-or-die play.

Garrett hits next guy in shoulder on a up and on pitch. 2 on with 1 out.

Next guy hits force out on first pitch

K's the next guy.

4 innings 0 hits. 1.38 ERA

Pennington watches strike 3

Base hit now given on the Pennington ground ball the previous inning.

Tucker grounds weakly to 1b.

Garrett hitting which is dumb if they plan to relieve him.

Garrett K's on bad swing. They may send him down to work on hitting.

Iglesias in. First line of Winker interview sounds like it was taught to him by Crash Davis.

First hitter flies out.

Second hitter grounds out to second.

K's last batter. Solid inning.

Winker a rookie. Doesn't know interview stops when 3rd out made.

If Garrett is indeed as good as he's shown this March, he'd be a fine addition to any pitching staff.

The Reds have to pleased with how well the youngsters and free agents have pitched so far this spring. Garrett, Mahle, and Romano have all looked quite good in limited innings this spring. So have free agents Hughes, Hernandez, and Quackenbush.

That, I suspect, is six of the 12 (or 13) spots on the major league roster. Castillo, Iglesias, and Bailey make it nine. Peralta and Lorenzen have been horrid, but gets the benefit of last season to assuage doubt.

That leaves two spots between Finnegan (who's probable if he pitches early this week), Weiss (unscored upon in 5.1 ST innings and on the 40-man roster), Rainey (big-time arm, will earn tons of K's-- and BB's), Reed, and Stephenson.

Billy grounds out, Blandino flies out deep, suarez gets hit.

Pitching change to bring in a lefty. Then Schebler CRUSHES one. To RCF and beyond the berm to the back wall.

Duvall K's swinging. Late on a fastball.

Are we sure Schebler can't do an adequate job in CF?

Bourgeois Zee
03-18-2018, 05:35 PM
Schebler won't hit like this in the regular season, but he's absolutely on fire. And has been all spring.

Looks a bunch like Jim Thome, when on.

JaxRed
03-18-2018, 05:35 PM
Ervin replaces Schebler and Brice in to pitch.

Walks first hitter.... (sigh)

Negron hits liner to RF for single.

Sharp single to RF scores one. 1st and 3rd no out.

Time for Brice to change locker rooms in Goodyear.

Sac fly scores another. ERA over 9 for Brice.

Next 2 guys make outs to limit damage.

JaxRed

Mass substitutions occurring....

Elizalde K's

Pennington walks.

Barnhart grounds out.

Ervin K's swinging.

Dick Williams interview coming up

HokieRed
03-18-2018, 05:55 PM
Just tuned in. 3 observations, mostly going along with what others have said:
1. Suggestion of Blandino move to CF is very intriguing
2. if earning a spot means anything, Garrett has done it today
3. Brice should be the next cut

Tom Servo

Disappointed with the spring performance from Brice, obviously the Straily trade is already a success but I still feel like Brice has good stuff but he can’t quite put it all together.

JaxRed

Brice gives up ground ball single to SS spot.

Force out to SS on next guy.

Double play on next ball.

A couple nice points in interview with Williams which will continue next inning.

Pennington's walk in the 6th is an underrated talent exhibited by the veteran. He spoiled several good pitches from Archie Bradley, who's as close to Aroldis Chapman as anyone in the National League.

Price will notice that.

Bourgeois Zee
03-18-2018, 06:22 PM
In an interview with Williams, he mentions Oliver Perez, then says "It remains to be seen" if they can afford his $1.25 million price tag as a LOOGY.

Also mentioned Reed and Garrett as possible relief arms.

Also mentions likelihood of pushing Greene aggressively similar to Senzel as he shows mastery.

Dayton first (after some time in Arizona).

Three Price faves this spring, according to Jim Day: Weiss, Rainey, and Quackenbush.

The Crafty Old Lefthander said Rainey's likely ticketed to AA, Weiss to AAA, and Quackenbush to the majors.

Perhaps.

Two ground balls to start, one of which would have been caught anywhere else on the infield.

Weiss and Rainey I don't think are quite ready for primetime but should be the first wave up assuming they pitch well and the big league bullpen invariably needs shuffling. I'd be okay with Quack making the team.

Chris Taylor made that switch just last year for the Dodgers. Gordon is making it this year for the Mariners.

Here was my thoughts about what Williams had to say.....

He had a whole lot of GM-speak about who's getting what positions for pitching (starter vs reliever), etc. Didn't "say" anything.

Tried to talk around the Senzel position talk, but I think he accidentally made a couple points. Point 1 - I think it's Senzel moving, not Suarez. He stated they were going to talk to Senzel in next few days about where he's going to play at AAA. Well. you don't have to have a talk if he's playing 3rd. He seemed to talk 2nd more than SS, although part of that was saying they want to look at Trahan at Louisville. Please......

Second - In the talk about the Suarez contract extension he said that when a player has 2 years of Arb left, you have to decide whether they are to be extended or traded. So that may be a future part of our game plan going forward.

He indicated the possibility of Greene starting in extended spring training. Also claimed that Greene would be on a fast track if he earns it. Not sure I bought that....

Were it my team, I'd take Brandon Dixon north.

He could play the corners and 2B. (I'd even look to see if he and Gennett could make an interesting platoon.)

That pop is intriguing.

JaxRed
03-18-2018, 06:42 PM
Williams also indicated that Senzel could play a corner outfield spot, but at least in the near future that seems highly unlikely to me. We already have a glut there with 3 guys for 2 spots.

SS fell asleep, but yeah, that'll work.

Were it my team, I'd keep him in AAA for a couple of weeks, then bring him up to hit second in my lineup.

I suspect the Reds will wait until Memorial Day or so.

Senzel reminds me a bit of Rolen (with better speed) and a bit of Jeter.

No pressure or anything.
