Man, they're not giving Stephenson much to work with, are they? Votto and maybe Scooter and Winker are the only guys in that lineup who scare anyone.

Why is Winker not leading off? I mean other than that he's not playing CF.

I want to see Stephenson starting in AAA and go with Bailey, Castillo, Garrett and Romano - with Finnegan if he's healthy and Mahle if he's not for the 5th when needed.

So it wouldn't bother me if Stephenson is mediocre this game. Not bad, just mediocre.

I think that makes me a bad person....

It is indeed a spring training game.

Single, single, fastball behind the helmet of the third batter. 2nd and 3rd nobody out. Next pitch bounces in front of the plate. Mesoraco saves a run with a great block. Stephenson issues his first walk. Bases juiced, still no outs.
Big strike out by Robert. One down. Line drive single. 1-zip Goat herders. Line drive to center is deep enough to score a run. However, Cub TOOTBLAN leads to a double play. End of a half inning of play, 1-0.

Leadoff single for the Cubs in the second. Stolen base. Balked the runner to third. Stephenson hits the next batter.

Brantley says same old same old Stephenson. Cowboy says Stephenson is throwing max effort with no idea where the ball is going.

The pitcher singles in a run. Great effort by Ervin comes up just short. 2-0 Northsiders. Second walk of the night to once again load things up. Reds' bullpen is stirring. Frozen rope right at the shortstop, and they double the runner off second. Wild pitch doesn't roll far from the plate. Mesoraco grabs the ball and then makes the tag. Another Cubs TOOTBLAN gets Robert out of the inning.

Stephenson making the decision an easy one

He’s not gonna be in the rotation. Which is a good thing.

are we to expect an injury announcement?

Well he’s making the starting rotation decision pretty easy.
It’s Reed or Mahle now or go sign Cobb.

Garrett?

11 batters for the Cubs in the first 2 innings: 7 line drives, 2 walks, 1 HBP and 1 K. 2 Cubs' baserunning errors have limited the damage to 2 runs.

I’m counting Garrett already in

Sounds like Finnegan will be available pretty soon. Mahle is available. Reed can fill in during the interim if needed.

I don’t see a big problem.

Gennett with a one-out single. Steals second and scooters to third on the errant peg.

If Lester can't throw over to first, he is going to see a lot of people running on him.

Winker walks. Reds strand a pair.

Okay, Robert, show us a little something here. Strike out looking. Let's see some more. 5 straight sliders, 5 strikes. Breaking ball results in a swing and a miss. 2 Ks. Pop out to Votto. Easy peasy. 1-2-3. He needed that inning badly.

Pop fly right to Ervin...........................and he drops it. Strike out swinging. 4 Ks for Stephenson on the evening. Hit and run, batter has to swing at a ball coming right at his noggin. Runner ends up on second. Still one away. Strike three called. 5 Ks. Price comes out, and we will have a new pitcher. Kevin Shackelford trots in from the pen. Stephenson threw a ton of pitches.

It was like 2 different pitchers. If he throws strikes, Stephenson is hard to hit. Big if.

Shack makes quick work of Jon Lester, striking him out.

Mesoraco singles, Scooter doubles and Peraza chases them both home with a base knock. All knotted up at 2.

Shack gives both runs right back. He is looking for a return to the City of Beautiful Churches. And a third run in the inning is charged to the Shackmaster.

Two bad outings in a row for Shack

This has absolutely zip to do with baseball, but Cincinnati has 12 nicknames listed in Wikipedia. They are, in order: The Blue Chip City, Cincy (or Cinci), The City of Seven Hills, The 'Nati (rack me), Paris of America, Porkopolis, The Queen City, The Queen of the West, The Tri-State, CinCity, Ohio's Maserati and Cincinasty.

If Southwest Airlines flew in to the Paris of America, their ads for flights to Cincinnati would go something like this: Looking to goettaway? Goetta = Barf. Glier's Goetta, the largest commercial producer of goetta, produces more than 1,000,000 lb (450 metric tons) annually, around 99 percent of which is consumed locally in Greater Cincinnati. You can have mine.

Reds move a run closer. Rosell Herrera singles, Ervin doubles and sac fly.

Tanner Rainey comes on to pitch the 6th. K. K. F-9. For the spring, in 6.1 innings of relief, Rainey has punched out 11.

I see Rainey as a big time future bullpen arm for this club.
