Yes, absolutely. Great opportunity to build some confidence if he is able to repeat or come close to his last performance.

I had to look up Steven Brault to see what type of stuff he has.

Low 90's fastball (92-93 average) with a ton of slider (83-84 mph) and sinker (92 mph) mixed in. He'll throw the change around one pitch in ten. The change up is pretty firm. He doesn't seem to throw very many strikes so far in his young major league career.

From fangraphs (https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/top-21-prospects-pittsburgh-pirates/), from 2017:

An athletic, albeit somewhat undersized, lefty whose fastball sits 88-91 with some sink and will bump 93, Brault has a chance for plus fastball command. He’s especially good at locating to his glove side, which helps his fringey changeup play just off the plate against right-handed hitters. His mid-80s slider is average. It bites late but lacks length unless he’s burying it down and to his glove side, where it can be particularly nasty. The slider plays up against lefties due to Brault’s low-ish arm slot and crossfire delivery.

Brault’s strike-throwing was not as crisp this year as it has been in the past, but he’s a terrific athlete and repeats his delivery well. A bounce back in this area is important because that command is the glue that holds Brault’s entire profile together and allows him to have a back-end starter’s profile.

When a team is playing badly they tend to look lifeless. Not sure it’s fair to draw the conclusion they aren’t trying. Or that the manager isn’t causing them to work hard.

It’s just that they aren’t very good and IMO they are more fun to watch with kids pitching. Garrett throwing well so far.

Joey Votto takes a couple of months to heat up. I would propose that he goes and plays immediately after the season in the AFL, then goes to play winter ball, then goes to spring training and takes no days off. By this theory, he'd never have to heat up and would hit .400 rather than the .320 he'll end up with after taking April off from playing vottomatic baseball.

There's no way it doesn't happen. They're not going to let Senzel sit in AAA all year with Peraza playing SS.

I'm not saying it's going to happen next week (even though it should). It will probably take month(s) longer than it should knowing this organization.

But it'll happen.

Probably the hunch that he's not a shortstop, that guys don't usually move UP the defensive ladder.

I dunno man I thought we got over this 'defense doesn't matter' kick years ago. But between this stuff and 'Put Schebler in center field' it's like we're going backwards.

2B is more difficult than 3B but the skillsets are different. We've seen guys like Perez, Killebrew and other first baseman spend multiple seasons at 3B. You'd never see that at 2B. Todd Frazier is an example of a pretty good defensive 3B who couldn't handle playing 2B in the minors. He was horrible there.

Only nice thing I can say is that the Pirates' take on the military uniform is far more tasteful than the Reds' take. Other than that and a Duvall HR, this one was sleepy time down south of Pittsburgh, and for some odd reason, I'm not upset. I expect to lose.

On the Brightside:

1) Duvall homered
2) Garrett still looks sharp out of the pen; (Forfreelin04 continues to scratch head over why he's not in the starting 4, let alone the 5th starter)
3) Ervin made a nice grab in RF on a very well hit ball
4)The Reds finally played a game after being off two days in a row
5) Nobody got hurt (that we know of..... yet)

On the Reality Side
1) Billy Hamilton continues to struggle at the plate and still can't bunt
2) Jose Peraza continues to struggle at the plate but when he makes contact... well it's like a bunt
3) Bailey is now a 100 Million Dollar Finesse Pitcher
4) Adam Duvall has more RBI's on the season than all other Reds hitters combined
5) We just lost a game with our ace starter on the mound against a pitcher who wasn't even supposed to make the rotation on a Pirates team that is flat-out selling their fan base on a rebuild

Depends on how good the guy is turning two is my first thought, that could be the most difficult part of playing 2b

2b and 3rd are changing, in today's game the LH shift places you in the OF a lot more, charting and the demise of turf has made the need for range first not the driver as much as in the past. Increased offense has made 3rd base defense less of a need as it used to be, it's more of luxury now, and if small ball dies completely and SB numbers drop more then 3rd basemen won't need to be as mobile as the ones we we all grew up with.
