Greg Garcia aside:

A major point of consternation in 2015 when the Reds got Finnegan was a preference for Daniel Norris. I actually preferred Norris as well but thought Finnegan was a good prospect and that the amount of daylight between him and Norris was doing overstated. And I think while he needs to take a step forward in the near future, Finnegan still has got a lot of potential and could put it all together to be a mid rotation guy.

Norris didn't throw any pitch faster than 91.2 mph on Wednesday, when he entered the game suddenly in the first inning after an injury to Jordan Zimmermann.

Last year at this time, Norris' fastball was averaging 94 mph and topping out at 97. His slider averaged 87 mph and could reach 91.

"I'm not really sure (why)," he said. "We've been doing a lot of mechanical stuff, so (the arm) is kind of getting used to that. I think (the velocity) will creep its way back up there eventually. But you can't worry too much about it.

He - or any of the starters - are not pitch efficient. They don't throw strikes and when they do they aren't missing bats. Thats why we see pitch counts of 60-70 in 4 innings. Then they have to be taken out and the soft underbelly of the bullpen is exposed.

The reds losing the next week of games by 10 or so runs a game would actually be a good thing long term. Kind of like how it was great that the fans booed Linder on opening day those many years ago.
