And yes, that's an illogical statement but it seems to be the "logic" the Reds are using with most decisions these days.

The problem with building a rotation that is 60% ultra inexperienced and 20% only has one full season two years ago is that you will have a lot of moments like these.

Not that Mahle-Castillo-Romano aren't incredibly talented because they are, but the nature of the beast says there will just be a lot of moments like that.

Well... what do you know?????

Bryan Price FINALLY uses Cody Reed in a manner in which he should pitch!
With a man at 2nd, no outs, and 2 lefties due up with a righty sandwiched in between.

And what happens??????????
Cody is 100% successful and looked the best he probably has in a Reds uniform.

DUH DUH DUH

I honestly wonder if Bryan Price even realizes what he just done?
Or is it just coiencidence?

Bryan Price has mis-used him since the day he was traded for.
The ONLY time Reed should be facing a righty is when it is sandwiched in between 2 lefties.

Misused in the bullpen? ABSOLUTELY
Misused as a starter? I say absolutely, he was obviously never a starter in my opinion. He obviously doesn't have the stuff to be a starter (aka stuff to get out righties consistantly)
So after about the 4th or 5th opportunity he was given to start, it should have been nipped in the bud. But instead Price just kept running him out there.
He was being misused by being allowed to start period.

The Operator

It's sad that he thought the 2-run Homer cost them the game. No Sal, your offense that has already been shut out three times cost you the game.

Yes I agree that in the bullpen he has not been used better. But you expect after 5 full ML starts they and not just Price but the whole organization was just going to give up on him being a starter. Come on. Typing in caps is not going to make it so either. Not after 5 starts.

Interesting that Romano only hit a rough patch after Barnhart replaced Mes in the 6th. Coincidence or did Romano feel jinxed?

The MLB box score gives Romano an error on a pick off throw and the next pitch is hit out of the park.

(My notes say that it is the bottom of the sixth, in a 0-0 game.........pressure, what pressure. My notes also refer to August 23, 2014..........Mike Leake's 135th career start, 141st career appearance, 27th game start for the Cincinnati Reds in 2014, 27th game appearance for the Cincinnati Reds in 2014......Leake takes a 0-0 game into the top of the sixth.....gains a groundout, a groundout and finally a flyout.......bottom of the sixth Leake doubles to lead off and Phillips singles him in.......score 0-1.........top of the seventh, Leake allows a double, a strikeout...5th of the game, 139th strikeout of 2014, 585th career strikeout, a strikeout.....6th of the game, 140th strikeout of 2014, 586th career strikeout, a walk, a walk....Leake is taken down for Diaz, who holds, Broxton, who holds, and Chapman, who saves. Final score 0-1. Leake gains the win and goes (10-11) on the 2014 season and (52-40) for his career. GO SUNDEVIL BASEBALL)

I'm in 100% agreement with The Operator here.
Young players are gonna have their ups and downs.
This young pitching staff has talent but there will be some growing pains.

Bryan Price said this..

"This particular group, if we give them the repetitions we need, they're going to evolve into a really nice starting rotation," Price said. "We've talked about growing pains so many times the last few years with all the young pitchers. … You have a base open there. Not that you have to give in to Thames, but he ends up getting a decent pitch to hit and ends up hitting it out of the ballpark.

"There's nothing you can really do other than give these guys the opportunity to pitch, and for them to learn through game situations. I was very pleased with the way [Romano] threw."

I watched the Brewers version of this game last night. Their announcers think the Reds are doing well in their rebuild and think they are going the right direction. Either they are more perceptive than most of us or they are nuts. I vote for the latter.

Well at least two things went right last night:

1. Romano and the pitching was good. If you get that most nights the Reds will win a few more this season.

2. Front Row Amy was in attendance. That always makes for better viewing of a Brewers home game.

Day game today at 1:35 pm.

I agree with the idea they threw him to the wolves for too long. The correct call was probably back to the AAA rotation. I just don't agree that is was Price call. I think these types of decisions are organizational in nature and I place the blame on the guy at the top. I'm sure Price has input into what they do and decides which reliever to bring in when, who to pinch hit, when to bunt, etc. But which young players are filling which roles, who is called up and who is left in AAA, those aren't Manager decision they way they were in the 60s and early 70s. Free Agency, Arbitration and all that rot has changed all that and even when that doesn't factor in, the responsibility has clearly shifted from the manager. Maybe a real big name Manager like Larussa used to be still has that power, but not normally and certainly not in Cincinnati. Even Dusty didn't have that power IMO.
