Suddenly Peraza doesn't look too bad hitting 2nd. Maybe he's coming around. The last ten days or so he's been good at the plate.

Votto is back into another world. That's a good thing for all of us Reds fans.

Really like Hamilton in the 9-hole with no pitcher in front of him. I would think Hamilton roaming CF has to be really enticing for an AL team. With less concern about hiding batters, he seems more valuable.

Winker and Schebler should switch positions on the field.

That is a head scratcher. The only reasoning I can think of is this is a lost season, might as well get Winker as many defensive reps as possible.

Reds go 1-2-3 in the first.

If last night's game taught us anything, it's that the first inning of the game definitely tells you who's going to win or lose.

I can live with not great range but zero reason he can’t have the proper footwork and catch the ball in position to throw. Really not hard at all.

Proper footwork and positioning (i.e., fundamentals) should be expected, especially for a player who is supposedly a natural outfielder. It shouldn't matter if he is in LF or RF (or CF, for that matter).

In fairness they never did when Phillips did, in fact they would often allude to the number of incredible plays he had made.

An error is an error, they are all different types and some bigger than others and some tougher than others.

Basically though, Scooter and Winker are not good on defense.

Also, Welsh is always harder on the younger player and gives more leeway to the older player. I’ve noticed that the last few years

I feel like I should qualify my earlier statement by saying that I do like all of the young Reds starters, worried as I may be about what's going on with my main man Castillo.

But what do The Reds expect when you out four of them in the rotation at the same time? Young pitchers struggle. They regularly have games where they can't go deep. Not only does this out extra pressure on the starters themselves, but this also puts a ton of pressure on an over taxed bullpen and also Bailey who probably feels like he needs to go 8 innings every time out. It's just a recipe for disaster.

I'm still high in all of them but it wouldn't have killed The Reds to hedge their bets and bring some veteran stability in to take the pressure off the guys who they are pinning the hopes of this entire rebuild on.

This is grievance #8689 that I have against this front office and ownership group.

True, but Hamilton is the guy who needed to come through. Up with no outs, all that’s needed is a grounder or an outfield fly ball.

The guy hitting with two outs needs a two out hit which is a tougher ask.

Sure, but you need to convert in the highest percentage situation.

Hamilton hitting RH v LHP, only needs a grounder or a fly ball. It’s like a lay up in basketball versus a three point shot.

A good offense converts on the high percentage play.

It’s great if others can compensate, but you need to make the lay up.

Hal Morris could play OF in the early part of his career. It was just that the opening in the lineup happened at 1B.

Morris was actually pencilled in as the Opening Day starter in LF for the Reds in 1990, until the Reds acquired Billy Hatcher a week before the season started.

I like it. If the starters aren't going to go more than 5 or 6 innings, then the relievers need to be able to pitch multiple innings.

Price wanted to pitch each reliever only one inning, which was why the Reds were saddled with eight- and nine-man bullpens.

/end rant

I know these game threads are yesterday's news, but I just wanted to agree with this as much as possible. It's been my primary grievance for 3 off-seasons in a row now and why I don't buy all the bad luck nonsense that I keep reading on here. This mismanagement has me so biased against the Reds front office, that I'm suspicious of every other move they make. I still think this team is being assembled and managed like it's a fantasy baseball team and not a real team that has to manage a roster with pieces that fit together over a long 162 game season.

mth123
04-29-2018, 07:51 AM
It rules that we're gonna argue forever about Winker's defense while Scooter botches three out of every four plays involving him lol

I just don't understand why it's even an argument. They both suck on defense. The fact that Scooter sucks doesn't make Winker suck any less. People defend him because they like his bat abd approach. No one is arguing that and while get evaluating a guy based on his overall game, Winker's defense is a huge problem no matter how much he hits. Same with Scooter. The Reds need to get away from a roster filled with half players.

mth123
04-29-2018, 07:57 AM
It's mostly because a few people here have taken up Winker's defense as their pet issue for whatever reason, I think.

People talk about it with Winker because the Reds aggravate the problem by playing him in RF (many times with Schebler in CF). When I talk about it it's not Winker I'm criticizing, it's the obviously stupid outfield rotation that sets them up for such nonsense. It all comes back to the GM playing fantasy baseball and not considering that this is a real game happening on the field.

In Gennett's case, there is nothing else to be done about it until Senzel is ready. Hopefully Gennett will be an ex-Red by the end of the year, but finding a taker may not be so easy.

mth123
04-29-2018, 08:12 AM
Austin Brice and Dylan Floro are the big stars of this game. Gotta give the brain trust it's due. Floro looks like a guy who could help. Keeps the ball down, throws strikes and was hitting 94 on the gun so he's not the soft tosser I thought he was. It would be a crime if he's the odd man out when they drop back to 12 pitchers or when Lorenzen returns. Of course, the clock could strike midnight, but right now, he wouldn't be the bubble guy in the pen for me.
