Not a big fan of it either. I can see the logic of batting BillyH lower in the lineup, but Billy's OBP of 270-330 ish (just guessing his career range) is better than the pitcher. Why give the pitcher more at bats than a position player? I mean the whole point of moving Billy down the lineup is so that the new leadoff hitter gets more ABs than BillyH (which I can see the logic of).

I think the logic is that if Cruz gets on first, having the pitcher behind him to bunt him over makes sense. But if Billy gets on first, he's got the ability to get to second without the help of a bunt. So batting the pitcher behind the catcher and Billy in the #9 hole makes more sense than having the pitcher bat behind Billy.

Maybe Miley being there will be like a reverse curse, and the Reds will go on a winning streak. Hey, two in a row is a winning streak, right?

I remember a few years back, sometime shortly after Tony LaRussa started hitting some of his pitchers 8th, I heard Chris Welsh mention during the game that some Sabermetric guy ran the numbers and determined that having the pitcher bat 8th gives a slightly better result in runs scored than hitting the batter 9th.

Accuracy of said report I can not guarantee, but I remember thinking at the time, I guess Tony LaRussa was smarter than I gave him credit for.

In the Reds case, after 2, maybe 3 times thru the order you're going to have a pinch hitter in the 8 hole anyways, if you haven't double switched. At any rate, when you're 9 up a jillion down, what's the difference?

I wonder Price would have caught the batter batting out of turn.

Anyway, here's the rule (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batting_out_of_turn#Example:_A_proper_batter_fails _to_bat_and_is_called_out):

Example: A proper batter fails to bat and is called out

Abel bats and is put out. Charles then bats out of turn. Charles makes a safe hit, reaching first base. Before any pitch is thrown to the next batter, a member of the defensive team asks the umpire to make a ruling. RULING: The proper batter after Abel was Baker, not Charles. Baker is called out for failing to bat in his turn, and Charles is removed from base and comes to bat again, because he is now the proper batter.

I hate impatient free-swingers. I love players who can take a walk.

But yeah, the backwards K is almost as frustrating as the swinging at junk on the first pitch.

The idea isn't to look for a walk, its to wait for a pitch you can hit hard. And if they throw 4 balls before you get that pitch, so be it.

“I think the world of Tony Cruz,” Price said. “He’s had a really good camp. I think he’s a big league player in my opinion. He’s certainly been a topic of discussion. That frees up (Devin) Mesoraco or (Tucker) Barnhart to pinch-hit on the days they’re not playing.”

Cruz, 31, has four-plus years of big-league time — nearly all of it as Yadier Molina’s back up in St. Louis. Cruz spent last year with San Diego’s Triple-A team in El Paso, Texas, hitting .280 with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 168 at-bats.

“If we have Tony, it gives us an experienced third catcher who has really improved as an offensive piece here,” Price said. “I think he’s a better hitter than he was years ago playing once every two or three weeks behind Molina.

Never seen a player force a pitcher to make a pitch that he had a good chance of driving hard than Edgar Martinez. It's amazing how brain-dead the majority (over 90%) of players are when it comes to the art and science of the plate appearance.

I have to admit I lost a lot of interest in the organization the last 10 years and consequently only look at the major league games and what I can glean through this website from the threads that look interesting.

I honestly could not tell you the names of three players on most of the Major League teams, and many I couldn't tell you just one. The REDS have numbed me on most of Major League baseball (including the hated Portland City Commissioners who chased baseball out of Portland).

When I was younger, I had at least some familiarity with most of the players on the other teams. Now, not so much. It's what happens when life gets in the way.

I think Babe Ruth said it the best:

“All I can tell them is pick a good one and sock it. I get back to the dugout and they ask me what it was I hit and I tell them I don't know except it looked good.”

This bullpen has the makings of a really good one if we can cut down on the times they have to come in during the second inning.

Welsh kinda indicated that they could have waited until something good happened for those hitters..

The NY "Athletic" writers discussed this quite a bit today. It can be brought to the umps attention at any point. They talked about a game where it got called in the 7th inning, because no one had gotten on base before that.
