If Reds had a left handed bat on the bench today would be a good day with Votto off versus a RHP.

I guess they do have Hamilton but he's not off and not hitting, Blandino, Cruz, Dixon all RHHs.

Dixon really is best used against LHP, but with the four man bench there aren't many choices.

Bryan's attempt was futile because these guys have pitched for years with, in essence, a 90-100 pitch limit. Hard to change that in the major leagues.

So you need a great bullpen to eat up the final few innings.

And that’s bad in regards to the development but the only way to learn is to try and push it every once in a while. Not every start of course since Price did over do it sometimes.

Every stat tells you differently.

Every pitcher in history has had his opposing OPS rise the third time through the lineup. That's not an opinion or debatable.

The difference between learning how to deal with it, as you are saying is a learned skill, and I agree 100%, is how magnified the increase in opposing OPS becomes the 3rd time through. But, they all see a rise in production from the opponent.

While Dixon had an awful day yesterday, he didn't go 1-11 to start his campaign like the guy he replaced.

He and Votto both had rough days yesterday. Would not surprise me if Votto spoke to Dixon afterwards and gave him words of encouragement. Kudos to Riggleman for giving him a start and a chance to get past yesterday and see some consistent pitches with multiple PA's.

The jitters are over now, hopefully, and he can be a decent pinch-hitter for us this Summer.

What's true? That "every pitcher in history has [had] issues" third time through? Because that was the position that was taken.

Some "pitchers in history" have handled the third time through rather well, and didn't need regularly to come out of the game.

That's the wall that makes a starting pitcher successful or if he heads back to the pen. He needs at least 3 pitches show he can show the players different looks because they get locked in quickly by the 3rd time through the lineup if he only has two pitches, no matter how good they are.

I'm not sure you even have to go six innings to remain a starter today.

The average start today is 5+ innings, very few teams average six per start.

It's a relief pitcher's age and these starters aren't trained to go deep into games. Unfortunate but analytics support the trend.

I'm not getting on Herrera's case. I just don't want to see him in a REDS' uniform this season. I've seen enough. Dixon has three times as many hits already in fewer attempts. There is also a Double among them. With only 4 bench spots, I don't want one of them going to a singles hitter or a guy who's best asset is that he can draw a walk.

The average start today is 5+ innings, very few teams average six per start.

It's a relief pitcher's age and these starters aren't trained to go deep into games. Unfortunate but analytics support the trend.

The shorter ballparks and smaller foul grounds have made putting the ball in play more difficult. Strikeouts become more important. Pitch counts are increased from fewer foul outs and the pitcher working around the strike zone trying to avoid the popup homerun and to get the strikeout.

A lot of things work against a pitcher going deeper in games today, but the main reason is their inability to get through a lineup the 3rd time.

Again, it's not debatable. A major league pitchers' opposing OPS will rise 3rd time through the lineup (where a pinch-hitter is often involved, too). If you look, will you find a very rare exception? Probably, as the opportunities for extremes are there with the large number of pitchers who have started in the majors.

As Tom Servo said, this isn't insight or news.

Kingspoint
05-24-2018, 03:37 PM
That 3rd time through the lineup is so difficult, that without looking, I would say the average rise is .250+ points (from about .600 to .850 would be my guess at 2nd to 3rd time through).
