Looks like all the usual suspects in there today. I thought Casali might get another start. Time for another two game sweep against an AL Central team.

Might have been a good day to get the bench players in the mix, but Riggleman seems to have no interest in that for whatever reason.

There have been so many off days lately, the regulars are probably reasonably rested.

Sure, but you want to make sure your role players aren't atrophying on the bench. Dusty was good at this.

The guys sitting today are:

Blandino
Dixon
Casali
Duvall

Blandino hasn't started but has played 4 of the past 5 games.
Casali is the only bench guy who didn't play last night and he caught on Sunday. He has played in 3 of the past 5.
Dixon hasn't started but has played 4 of the past 5 games.
Duval has played every game this month.

Seems like they are getting used.

I don't think I'm saying anything controversial here, if you aren't going to give someone like Blandino some starts why not just keep Cliff Pennington around?

just because they briefly appear in a game is hardly the same as letting them start. I'm especially confused about the (non) use of Blandino. If they've already decided on him being a limited bench player, I'd like to hear the reasoning for that.

Blandino is also 1 for his last 20 with 9 k's in that time. If anything he should be in AAA playing SS or an OF position unless of course they play Senzel playing there. An AB per game is not regular play but is also not atrophication. Bring up an older non-prospect like Iribarren to be the 25th man as he is versatile (can even pitch in a blowout) and it won't impede his own progress.

There have been so many rest days in the past 2 or 3 weeks the regulars need fewer days off than in periods where things will be a real grind.

Going into today the Reds’ team OBP was .331, tied for 3rd-4th in the major leagues and second in the NL.

While the power numbers are down, this is a dramatic turnaround for this team. One would have to credit their rebuild in this regard, Reds have transformed the offense in terms of on base.

Mahle is a fly ball pitcher and he is going to allow homers at GABP.

He’s not ideal for this stadium but he’s avoided the BB/homer combo which is deadly.

Other successful pitchers have allowed gopher balls, particularly solos, so I’m not too worried about it. Basically he’s effective.

Just score some runs today, Reds.

Reds fans and management should be concerned about the longballs. It's not as if he's choosing to only give them up when no one is on base, that's just pure dumb luck. Can he improve? Absolutely! Should the Reds give up on him? That would be one of the dumbest moves this org has made!

If Mahle's a #5 starter, as was clearly stated on here this afternoon, the Reds will stink for a very long time, because he's as good as the team has. The only chance to compete, with that argument, is to sign not one ace, but an ace and two others.

Kinsm
06-20-2018, 02:28 PM
I never said that. I was trying to say he has a chance to improve and there were many other pitcher who had great careers despite giving up a lot of HR's. If you can't see that then I can't help you.

You said, "we shouldn't worry". Then attempted to back it up with guys who didn't give up HR's at nearly the rate he's giving them up.

I disagree, we should worry! Reds fans should worry about this entire staff, the rebuild hangs in the balance.

So Romano and Mahle have given up 2 runs in 13 innings at home (hitter's park). I'll take that every day and twice on Sundays. The Reds pitching is better than last year no matter what anyone else tells you. The throw would have been about the same distance it was when Schebler tagged up and went to 3B the inning before. But this time the fielder's momentum was going straight toward the plate, and it was only the 1st out. The inning before the fielder's momentum was going away from 3B, again it was just the first out, but it was a big run the Reds needed to get in to close the gap.

just because they briefly appear in a game is hardly the same as letting them start. I'm especially confused about the (non) use of Blandino. If they've already decided on him being a limited bench player, I'd like to hear the reasoning for that.

Then they'd have to tell him that and they aren't going to do that.

- - - Updated - - -

Blandino is also 1 for his last 20 with 9 k's in that time. If anything he should be in AAA playing SS or an OF position unless of course they play Senzel playing there. An AB per game is not regular play but is also not atrophication. Bring up an older non-prospect like Iribarren to be the 25th man as he is versatile (can even pitch in a blowout) and it won't impede his own progress.

There have been so many rest days in the past 2 or 3 weeks the regulars need fewer days off than in periods where things will be a real grind.
