I think seeing that just shows that games in April absolutely matter. The Reds have been fantastic since then but there's just no digging out of a hole that big.

If they can get back to .500 by the end of the year I'll consider it a wild success. But then I'll still be watching Dick Williams with a very critical eye heading into the offseason with regard to the rotation.

It is beyond time to put up or shut up. We can't afford to go into 2019 with a rotation full of "if he can put it together" and "if he could just get healthy" or we'll be dealing with the exact same thing again. Build a real starting rotation that you can count on.

I think it was both sides, though possibly more the Mets given Wheeler's public desire at the time to stay in NY. Of course with how everything has turned out I would like to have Wheeler right now, but he missed all of 2016 which was not the plan and had a rough go of it last year. He's just finally now rounding back into form, much more of a sure thing than he was three years ago.

That Billy catch was just ok to me.....not like last night.

It was a tough play because of how it was off bat....Billy’s route was sub par, jump wasn’t great (gotta freeze and read some of the ones off the bat).....closing speed to catch the sinking gapper was impressive. A lot of OF guys get highlight plays on those all the time....Billy’s earned a handful of those highlights.

But that play might not crack his top 100

Not sure it's gone but yes, and it's taken away his margin for error. He still has the stuff to be dominant. Just needs to command his pitches a bit better. I think he is close.

You especially don't with a backup catcher who is more of a power bat than a contact bat.

I don't want to nitpick every move to death. Even the failed ones. But I'm pretty sure if Riggleman had Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, and Barry Bonds in his lineup he'd frequently ask them to bunt when he thought they needed to.

Disagree entirely. You need a lead to win. Sacrificing an out there even if the run scores is not a good play. Even if Casali had failed to drive in that run we would have had a pinch hitter with another chance with 2 runners on base.

Redeye fly
07-14-2018, 08:27 PM
Hey the Cardinals can't bunt either!

Really that is where Riggleman is too old school with that very thing. To players today the idea of dropping a bunt down and trying to master the art is the same as a 6'4" basketball player with a crazy vertical concentrating on perfecting his layup technique instead of throwing down the dunk.

Which isn't to say today's players to a man swing out of their shoes, though obviously a lot do. They just don't put a lot of emphasis on being a good bunter.
