Not great numbers anywhere, but always does enough to fit in.

HR's are a good strategy for Ervin.

Hard (not impossible) to mess up on the basepaths.

I was kind of over Ervin after he failed to stick as the backup outfielder to start the year, but the huge month he had from mid June to mid July had me thinking maybe something clicked, and he's carrying it over now back to the Reds.

The opportunity is here for him now, hopefully he can grab it.

Ervin aside it’s painful to watch the young talent around the league rarely get an adequate chance to establish themselves. For a year-round everyday player a 3 for 30 stretch is just something that happens. But when these rooks get called up and go 3-30 in sporadic playing time many get banished to the Island of Misfit Toys.

There’s no easy answer but it stinks to watch and wonder.

I think teams are a lot like other bureaucracies. There’s a bias toward steadiness and not rearranging the organization for the new guy. We might parse out who needs playing time, who’s blocking someone, etc. But the organization thinks, “Fit in and be ready when you’re called.”

Billy gets infield "hit" to SS. Steals second, and advances on flyout to third. Ervin hits sharp sac fly to make it 7-1.

So, can DeSclafani actually avoid giving up a HR for only the 2nd time in 11 2018 Starts?

Solve this problem, and Anthony becomes a great Starting Pitcher. He has everything else figured out.

Reds with a 6 run lead going to the bottom of the six and their starter has less than 70 pitches. Just what is needed in the opener of a doubleheader!

Ervin boots a catchable ball and now we have 2nd and 3rd with 2 out. Next guy grounds out to Votto.

7-1 after 8 in the 7th game of the WS (as Riggleman is handling bullpen)

I disagree with the criticism of Riggleman putting in Hernandez in the 8th. The Nats had the top of the order up - if they don't score that inning (which they didn't) they have 3 outs to score 6 runs with the bottom of the order. Having a competent pitcher navigate that inning helped. Hernandez can either pitch the 9th and take the rest of the day off or put one of the mop up guys in and hope for the best. Either way, the rest of the bullpen should be rested for game 2.

With a 6-run lead here, I'd have let Reyes start the 9th and tried to have saved Lorenzen for the nightcap.

So Riggleman sits Garrett who had been warming, and Lorenzon and Reyes (both righties) start throwing. 6 run lead in the 9th, he puts in Lorenzen, instead of giving a look to Reyes. Burning his regular bullpen. Why was Reyes throwing?

Walks a guy and now Garrett is up again.

Lorenzen closes out the game.
