Strikes Out Looking
08-10-2018, 04:09 PM
With a much weaker lineup these days, I'm really wondering if Batting Billy 9th makes any sense. If the pitcher is batting behind him and he somehow gets on with less than one out, he can be bunted to 2nd (or steal easier than batting before Pereza, IMHO) and that may give the Reds an additional chance to score a run once in awhile.

I can see it now...batting 8th and playing CF BILLY HAMILTON......batting 9th and pitching JOSE PERAZA

Normally I would agree with you but they have no backup out fielders it's unreal.

One of the Reds problems is they should not give up an out to get him to 2nd(use straight steals and the hit and run), or 3rd for that matter, even if the P is batting, so don't bat him in front of the pitcher and give the pitcher an opportunity to hit into a DP. Reds need a Jim Gilliam type hitter behind Billy. Gilliam hit behind Maury Wills for years and was very good at protecting him and judging whether or not Maury had a good enough jump to steal 2nd and then decided to swing or not for a foul or an attempt to hit it where the infielder had vacated.

FWIW, Wills was safe in his career in 73.8% of his steal attempts.

IIRC, the break even point for stealing or not is 70%. It puts into context whether Wills should have been trying to steal at will or not.

C'mon he apologized (begrudgingly), lol

First time this year hearing Thom, I was thinking he has improved a lot in tone, but his irritation switch has a hair trigger.

Votto and Suarez with good ABs and good base-running by Peraza to judge early that Joey's flare was going to fall in.

So Disco has given up 15 HR in 65 innings...not good.

But a 57/18 K/BB ratio will play.

Really hope he stays healthy.

What a great start. I imagine he goes back out to start the 8th....hopefully on short lease if he does.

I'm worried about the finish, especially if Disco has to run hard on the bases.

Yeah, I'd go the the pen and try to nail down the win here.

Hopefully Hughs is warm and ready to come in at any point.

2 run suicide squeeze. Wow. Perfect bunt from BH.

That is, when it works that well.

His running the bases hard that inning (which would not have been known when he was sent up to bat) figured hard in the decision to pull him after one pitch.

Pitching uses a ton of leg strength, and Disco would have used up a fair bit on that sprint from first to home.

I'm guessing some consideration was given to pulling him even before sending him out.

I'm guessing that if Disco took a 3 pitch strike-out on his AB in the 7th, and the score was still 1-0, he would have likewise been lifted if the lead-off batter reached in the top of the 8th.

You may well be right, because I doubt the Reds would have given him the chance to lose this game.

I expect that if he had struck out and the Reds still took a 3-0 lead, he might have had a longer leash.

Maybe only one more base-runner, but I don't think they would have let him face the tying run at bat. But who would you rather face the batter, that if he gets on, the tying run comes to the plate? A 94+ pitch Disco, or Hughes.

I love Votto in the 2 hole.
I'm glad Riggleman seen the writing on the wall. Something Price could never see.
Votto is the definition of an on-base MONSTER, his power has diminished to almost nothing, and Suarez/Scooter are killing the ball.
These days we need Votto on-base & scoring runs instead of driving them in as much.
