The Free Dilson campaigning is working.

No Votto today. Did he have a setback from last nights game?

Jim Riggleman said he may sit Joey Votto tomorrow as Votto's bruised knee still lingers.

(That was a tweet from last night)

Since we're essentially playing exhibitions at this point, I like seeing Herrera, Dixon and Ervin. We need to evaluate them as much as possible.

We also need to see Tucker when he is healthy.... but man I haven't seen squat from him so far.

Imagine looking into the future from a year ago and seeing this lineup.

The questions I would have:

1. Harvey? Certainly not Matt Harvey
2. Who the heck is Casali?
3. I would question who Herrera is in LF without assuming it was Dilson
4. Where's Joey?

Looking at that lineup, ballparking the Reds' current record wouldn't have been too tough.

Can’t hurt - but I think the Reds know exactly how they plan to handle each of them. I don’t think these “trials” will amount to anything new.

In most cases, I don’t think these players will be around next year. Maybe all cases. Just my guess.

But it can’t hurt to look at them, there’s nobody better to use currently, no problem with it.

Glad to see Herrera get some at bats. I bet he will be a adventure though in LF. You would think Scooter could use a day off against a LHP. If nothing else use Scooter at 1B. Herrera at 2b. I haven't saw anything from Dixon to say he deserves a spot on the 2019 team. Except he can play several positions, and the fact that every team goes with a 4 man bench now. So I guess he has that going for him.

What's Thom's problem here? Does he think a double should be worth twice as much as a single? I assume a single gets extra initial value because the runner getting on base is the most valuable part of the equation, but that's just off the top of my head.

Maybe, but he'd have a lot farther to go, being in Atlanta and all.

Alf_Red_E

Duvall was a spare infielder when he was with the Giants... I have no issue converting an IF to OF if his bat can sustain it

Ironman92

I believe a LF comfortable with the surroundings catches that ball. I’m good with Dilson not getting there. It wasn’t easy by any means. I’d guess if it was his 3rd or 4th start out there he catches it

Ironman92
08-11-2018, 09:07 PM

mhs95_06
08-11-2018, 09:09 PM
Umps have been over-ruled so much on that play, they try to call it now, but then when they are wrong there is not evidence enough to overturn.

Alf_Red_E

Yeah those last 5 years where he was a 133 OPS+ guy with a .915 OPS and 40 HR....he killed the Reds chances of winning but at least they got great players for him when they traded him away.

Votto is a very good revenge hitter. Walking Peraza in front of him was just asking for it.

The best part is, when you Poke The Votto, and he gets angry, and doesn't just get revenge on you. He gets revenge, nonstop, for the rest of the season.

Or so the anecdotal evidence from last year suggests. I don't know how to direct link to a post within a thread, but last year, in late July, "Votto Has the Shanks" was a thread we had. Then Luis Severino brushed Votto back. Twice. In a row. Next pitch: line drive to CF. Rest of game: on base 4 times. At the time, Chris Welsh himself suggested the two high hard ones woke Votto up, and pitchers from here on out might be dealing with a different beast.

Votto's July (when he had "the shanks), he was hitting .275/.440/.440 (he had a strong June, but the narrative at the time was he was coming in for a "down year")... his August and September numbers: .350/.500/.570.

In the grand scheme of things, getting drilled by Madsen and then having the D-Backs walk the guy in front of you is probably even MORE insulting that Severino's two brushbacks. I fear for National League pitchers the next 7 weeks!
