There had to be a misunderstanding with the FO and Riggleman when they brought Dilson up. This is just appalling. He needs to be getting ABs somewhere

I know "we're" a little outfield challenged at the moment but I'm not sure why Prestin Tucker is getting starts....maybe it doesn't matter but is he really on the radar for next season and/or beyond?

I never noticed the OCD-like nature of Stephenson till Thom mentioned it.

Peraza missed a catchable line drive.

Gameday shows all the borderline strikes being called balls. Reputation for wildness can't help with those.

Also he has not thrown an offspeed pitch or slider for a strike yet. That does not bode well.

Nah. Clear balls.

JaxRed
08-15-2018, 07:19 PM
Ramirez flied deep to CF. Alonso up next. Yonder k's on 3-2 pitch. Looked like offspeed pitch he was ahead of. Melky chades one out of strike zone to end inning.

No runs, and it was extended by Peraza not coming up with catchable ball, but that was 26 pitches in the first.

Nice recovery to get out of the inning unscathed. He is like a rocket out there, a true steam engine!

Seems to be able to locate offspeed better than his heater.

This was one of the adjustments that he supposedly made in the minors- he started to work off the slider and off speed stuff and then add the FB in instead of the other way around.

Votto flies out to deep CF and Peraza advances (barely). He ended up with knot on shin. Suarez (who's cooled a bit) is up.

Cody pitched nicely. Cheapo home run hurts the ERA but doesn’t mar the performance. Nice going.

The performance was much more marred by the lead-off walk that ended up being the tying run on the cheap home run. GABP is well known for cheap HRs, so a lead-off walk is that much more detrimental than in a large park.

You don't put the contact play on with 0 outs, runners at 2nd and 3rd and 2-3-4 coming to the plate in the form of three All-Stars. IF Riggleman did that (and I doubt he did) that's almost grounds for firing him on the spot. My hunch is Billy just was over-aggressive and had a brain fart.

Riggleman said if Peraza goes to 3rd on contact like he was supposed to and they get Billy out at home, you have Peraza on 3rd with one out and Suarez up(which Riggleman wanted) and Joey on 1st which would keep them from pitching around Eugenio to keep from moving the winning run to 2B.

It seems to me that Peraza is very bad at grasping and carrying out the pre-play strategy! How many times has he not covered 2nd on a stolen base attempt. Also he may have messed up on what was trying to be done when he was up and Billy was at first regarding hit and run plays, stolen base attempts, etc. Seems like he may have a flippant attitude and not value each opportunity to make an out or move the offense along. For instance, did he really value the out on the 2nd batter of the game and put full concentration at gloving that line drive right at him in tonight's game? It would have killed the 1st inning 3 run rally and gone a long way to allowing the struggling pitcher to get settled in.

Peraza has a reputation for hard work and a serious attitude to the game. I know of no evidence of a flippant attitude. I don't see much advantage having BH run on contact there, it was an easy out and you lose having BH and Peraza both in scoring position.

Presumably Peraza decided it was too risky to run to third for whatever reason. It ultimately didn't matter, Suarez struck out, but I'm not sure about the whole strategy.

How did they lose Pedraza in scoring position?

How could Pedraza decide it was too risky to run to third. The play was to home, he could have crawled there as long as he leaves the moment the ball is hit on the ground.

The whole reason that teams put the contact play on is that it's takes too long to see if a ball is hit directly at a fielder. If you wait, you can't score on a ground ball that a fielder reaches for. The infield was playing back. Percentages dictate that Hamilton would score on the vast majority of ground balls. Even marginal ones.

Stephenson ain't looking so good. They can keep him in rotation the rest of the season and see how it goes. But if there isn't significant improvement there is no need in wasting time with him next spring. If you want to try him in the bullpen then fine but starting should be out of the question without significant improvement the last five weeks of this season.
