With Ervin and Herrera playing against lefties, versus Tucker and Williams against righties, I prefer the lineup against southpaws. Simply more power.

Happy the Reds have found a way to use Dilson, albeit not at his main position. Plenty of baseball left, hope both Ervin and Herrera get ample playing time, they both should be in contention for a future spot.

Belt K's and Panik flies out to Herrera. Herrera has looked pretty comfortable there. Nothing has been very challenging, though. McCutcheon sliced one down the right field line for a double. Crawford singles harmlessly to Scooter to end inning,

NebraskaRed

I bet McCutchen wouldn't mind being constantly traded to whichever team is currently playing the Reds

Billy walks, and so that means he stays at first with no attempt to run, until Jose hits a DP ball. Scooter flies out.

Nonsense explanation on the error.

I figured it would be a hit but loved hearing Welsh having to say “the fielder can’t be penalized for taking a bad route.”

Who was the last Reds manager who would regularly play someone who was called up without making them sit on the bench for a week or so first?

I know Dusty had a habit of not putting someone in the lineup for a day or two after coming off the DL. He also never seemed to want to play anyone who was just called up.

Price would do the same.

I don't remember enough about Pete Mackanin to say.

A fielder can misplay a ball so badly that the official scorer cannot charge an error on the play.

However, I don't think that this was one of those cases. Should have been an E7.

I think the call was consistent with the usual. Not saying it’s fair, but usually a misjudged fly to outfielder is a hit.

Muffed fly ball hit right to him, or if glove touches ball, usually an error.

I think scorer doesn’t presume outfielder can get to ball if he has to run and doesn’t get there.

Big Klu

I even think it tipped off his glove.

Touching a ball does not necessarily mean an error should be charged, nor does not touching a ball mean that an error shouldn't be charged.

But yes, it did tip off Herrera's glove, and it should have been ruled an E7.

Error is far more likely to be called if ball hits glove.

Not always, but that seems to be the custom.

If Hamilton dives for it and tips it, no, then error won’t be called.

If ball hit Dillon’s glove on today’s play it would be usual to call an error there.

I agree with that assessment. It really goes as to whether the play should have been made with "ordinary effort". If so, then an error should be charged. If not, then the play is a hit.

Most of the young guys are nicely functional....Reds have always had that player or two you’d hate to see batting and a pitcher or two in bullpen you’d hate to see and he’d get 60 appearances, this team really doesn’t have any of that.

On this date in 1965, Jim Maloney pitched a 10-inning no-hitter in a 1-0 win vs. the Cubs. He struck out 12 and walked 10, and threw 187 pitches.
