Puig hitting four, with Suarez among the top three, is an improvement IMO.

But generally the guys need to hit more, not sure the batting order is the main issue.

Peraza was lousy for the first month last year too

I was asking what anyone saw in him or how he made it this far on a few posts.

I will give him more of the benefit of doubt though this time but the strikeouts are alarming.

Dusty really was obtuse when it came to that BS of SS bats second no matter what.
Every manager in the 70s practically did it with some of the most unproductive hitters.

Dave Chalk
Frank Taveras
Marty Perez
Bill Russell
Felix Millan ? Choked up on the bat so much he puts Joey Votto to shame.

To me it just feels like they already have no margin for error if they’re going to stand a chance at a wild card or even just going .500 at this point. Even after the aforementioned winning streak, they still have like a bottom 3 record in baseball if I’m not mistaken. They were already going to need everything to break right for them to contend in any way, and that’s already not happening.

And that was before we knew they had any intention of genuinely trying to improve in 2019. The thought process genuinely seemed to be "we can just keep him as long as we want and his value will be high (even as he loses years of control and starts giving up more and more HRs) and nothing can go wrong".

But one can't live in the past I suppose. Suarez and Winker let a potential rally slip away.

My win total prediction (as a particular troll likes to point out) was 85. I didn't really think playoffs were too realistic but I thought they could at least be in the mix into August. The level to which they’re completely just dropping all these 1-run games is killing them. I mean even despite the record, I think they should still have a positive run differential, though that’s probably changed as of this game. They aren’t getting blown out by double digits the way they were at this point a year ago, but man they have to start getting some breaks their way at some point.

I mean, yes and no. The result so far is kind of the same but how they got there seems different. These games have been genuinely competitive. A lot of those Price era games seemed to be the Reds getting down big, clawing back into it towards the end with some HRs but never getting over the hump. I mean, yes and no. The result so far is kind of the same but how they got there seems different. These games have been genuinely competitive. A lot of those Price era games seemed to be the Reds getting down big, clawing back into it towards the end with some HRs but never getting over the hump. These have predominately been games that could go either way, yet somehow the Reds manage to wind up on the wrong end.

The manager has a lot to do with his that!

Reds’ hitters’ BB/K ratio is .30, which is 25th of the 30 teams.

Last season it was .41, which was 8th best in MLB.

Lack of patience at the plate as the recent Fangraphs article noted.

So what type of analytics do the Reds use that has Bell making decisions like today. Or in the STL last game debacle.

Is he trying to manage by gut or feel as well. Doesn’t explain how he feels Sir Duke is his best option from the LH side in the bullpen.

And while the Reds’ run differential indicates a better W-L record, keep in mind that they were +20 in the Marlin series.

Only point being that some might not want to rely on the current run differential as a predictor of the future given the impact of that one series against poor competition.

I can't look back, but it seems the Reds have faced every team's ace, and that accounts for the .245/.196/.180.205/.219/.157 hitting. The trip to Monterey, LA, and Pittsburgh hasn't helped. Those bats will come around, but SD is next. Brutal schedule. And I might add a lot of strange lineups.

MLB is totally consumed with homers. I think I read today that 1 in 6 base hits today is a homer. (Just my memory, not checked.) Reds did not generate very much HR power for a GABP team last year. It’s possible that they are trying for more power and it’s hurting plate discipline.

If so - and it’s just a guess - maybe some more time is needed for the new approach to work.

Again, this is just a guess, there could be other reasons for the plate discipline issues.

Final point on offense - Reds (like most teams) only have so many excellent all around hitters.

When Senzel and Gennett return that could have a major impact.

Last year Scooter and Suarez were the two key bats in a decent offense. Losing one of those guys for three months is a big deal.

That was with an insanely high babip. If you look at his other numbers they are close to what Schebler did in the majors last year. Walk rate k rate.
Schebler 9.1 BB 23K .184 iso .301 babip in MLB last year
Senzel 9.8 BB 20.2 K .199 iso .367 babip in AAA so would expect the numbers to be less vs MLB pitching/defenses which puts him in Senzel territory at this point. I expect him to improve in a couple of years with Maturity and experience
