There were 112 games last year that Peraza didn’t lead off. So it’s not like he was THE lead off hitter.

Maybe I'm not seeing the whole story, but Schebler hasn't impressed me one bit this season. seemed to be warming up. Schebler swings at the first pitch almost every at bat. Oh well. The outfield is hitting .176, .170, and .208. OPSing at .662,.496, and .569. Guess it doesn't make any difference.

Homer with 6 superb innings at the Stadium.

in a universe in which Homer wasn't traded, the outfield would be Winker, Schebler, Ervin?

Or, I guess there's the possibility that without Puig and Kemp, Senzel would have made the team out of spring training, but I think they were going to keep him in Louisville to start the year no matter what.

The starting rotation would be Castiilo-Gray-Roark-Homer-Disco?

Oh well....My fear is that we are seeing a rooking manager who has no idea what he is doing. It's early, but the scenario is similar to 2013-2018. Scary.

Homer with 6 superb innings at the Stadium.

He is throwing a split finger pitch with serious drop and staying around the fringes of the strike zone with his other pitches. He is not working off of the FB/slider combination so much. Hitters can't wait on him to make a mistake with the FB. Lots of off-speed pitches at or below the knees. Good for Homer. I hope he can extend his career. Still, Homer is not worth $28M. I would have made that trade 10 times out of 10.

We can speculate on why he was unable to make the necessary changes in Cincinnati. Maybe DJ could have helped. I suspect it was simply a case of mutual frustration that was not going to change.

Votto has batted 3rd almost his whole career. Why isn’t he hitting third now? He hasn’t hit third this year at all. Why clog up the base paths with a 36 year old batting lead off? That is almost as stupid as batting a catcher lead off.
Peraza is an ideal 2 hitter and he hasn’t hit second yet this year.
Why bat a pitcher eighth?

He trumps Senzel due to his speed and his ability to play SS. The starting pitcher Paddack is superior to the best pitching prospect in our system. I agree that I think lineup orders have an effect on many batter's approach....I would have Winker, Peraza, Votto, Suarez, Puig, Schebler, Barnhart, Iglesias with the players active currently. Then when Senzel and Scooter return, I would push Puig down into that 7 slot.

It’s weird that you put a guy in LF who can’t play LF and he doesn’t make a moderately difficult play.
I don't think it was even moderately difficult. He just whiffed on a fairly basic running play.

JCM11
04-19-2019, 12:04 AM
I blame the OF positioning more than Dietrich there. Why play him so far off the line when you're throwing Machado nothing but breaking balls? Also nice recovery from Stephenson to limit the damage.

It’s weird that you put a guy in LF who can’t play LF and he doesn’t make a moderately difficult play.

Why was he so far toward center? Or did he get a horrible jump. I don't know Manny's hitting sheet but I would think you would play the #3 hitter straight up or to pull.

Thom really seemed like he wanted Stephenson to fail there. “It says he’s thrown 14/22 strikes but you could say 8/22 with all the balls they’ve chased out of the zone” while failing to mention how nasty his slider is.

NebraskaRed

Yes, but Thom is loved in Cincinnati. I don't know why, but he is. One of my buddies lived in Cincy. He tells me this and his friends tell me this. He sat alongside me in concert band in high school, and they all say Thom is great. He's Marty's son, so there's that. We're stuck with him, so sync your radio with the TV broadcast and enjoy. Marty is gone (sadly) after this, and it's a logical situation. All this wailing and gnashing of teeth does nothing for the games. Win or lose, I'm a Reds fan and I can ignore Thom.
