This may be Ervin's big chance to show he should be in the big leagues to stay.

Good to see Dietrich in the lineup. He's about the only consistent power they have had to this point in the season.

Let's hope the ball stays away from Winker in LF as much as possible.

I wonder if they would honor 197something prices? This was from WOY's twitter account.

"Plenty of seats available"

My how times...haven't changed

Except for a few short seasons in the mid 70's its always been that way. Also Riverfront had a capacity of over 52,000. So even on good attendance nights there could be over 20,000 seats available.

Have I mentioned how much I dislike the "pitcher bats 8th" gambit?

not a fan of it either. and not just because tony larussa came up with it. (all right, that's part of it.)

what do the analytics say about that? just doesn't seem to add up math-wise since you want your best hitters at the plate as much as possible. say what you want about iglesias' bat, it's far better than roark's.

They say a position player batting 9th has a better chance of getting on base than the pitcher does and would give the top of the order a chance to drive him in.

I’d have to find the article that breaks it down, but basically it was saying this and the analytics support it. It’s an odd lineup to get used to but I don’t hate it. Let’s just get the DH and it won’t matter.

mamell

From everything I've been able to find on Soroka he throws a wicked fastball. Also from everything I've been able to digest the Reds hitters are pretty good with hitting the fastball. Perhaps the combination will translate into a 2 game win streak with the ball leaving the yard more times than not..

Sorry, just stuck in my fantasy thinking mode for awhile.. Sometimes it actually pays off.

It'll eventually happen, but it will eliminate that age old quandary managers have had to face many a game over the years. I've never really been a big fan of the DH, but I'm not opposed to change when warranted.

This may be Ervin's big chance to show he should be in the big leagues to stay.

I'd start Ervin any day over Schebler who is just a rally killer at the plate and a water buffalo in the outfield. Yes, he has tremendous power and when he gets a hold of one it's spectacular, but those are few and far between.

No because by the time you move him up that far you’re actually disrupting the lower part of the batting order where there are actually still good hitters

Most 8th spot hitters suck, but they still have a better chance of getting on base than a pitcher, so there’s really no reason to not swap them

I mean I guess if you think it’s blatantly racist rather than a poor choice of words. I don’t really think Welsh is so stupid to say “whatever just throw him a sack of pennies he won’t even know the difference”

That’s pretty much exactly what he said.

That’s pretty much exactly what he said.

I get his wording was bad, but to me it seemed like he was making the point that past a certain dollar amount, a guy is set for life and wouldn’t know the difference if he was making more money, which is the same rationale people using to explain why he might have signed that contract a week or two ago whenever it was.

I don’t agree with it and I think it’s excuse making to take the side of not paying players what they’re worth, but I definitely don’t think it was racially motivated at all.

The heck of it is with a player you let go for lack of hitting then nobody seems to hit their weight the next season the let go-ee seems like a savant in retrospect even if he was just below average. If everyone on this team was hitting as well as last year it wouldn't be the slightest issue letting him go. Now suddenly his .230 BA seems like a team leader.. That's bad..real bad. It would be almost the same as everyone missing Homer now..
I was over Billy for several seasons so you're right. It was the right move letting him go. It's mere coincidence the team is mired in a teamwide slump.

The offense has to wake up if this team's ever gonna do anything.

Relief pitchers give up runs, even the best. Starters give up runs too. Going through team-wide slumps outside of a random game here and there is a great recipe for losses. The great pitching so far is the only reason The Reds are even within sniff distance of .500.

Fair enough..
As for that 35 million dollar contract I doubt many of us will ever sniff that kind of money much less sign contracts for that kind of dough. Perhaps some folks see 35M as chicken feed, but I certainly don't. Personally I don't think any player in any sport at any time is legitimately worth that kind of money, but then again I don't own a major sport franchise (nor minor sport franchise) and there is a point to be made that nobody ever purchased a ticket to go watch a team owner sit in their luxury box. We pay to watch the players which is why they get paid upward of 35 million and more.
