No, your memory is sound. The 5th starter would sometimes be skipped if his turn coincided with an off day, and sometimes one or two other starters would start on short rest so that the fifth starter could be skipped.

Stubbs couldn’t slide and catch in CF and diving never happened. I’ve never seen a CF that couldn’t slide/dive for a catch. I’ll defend OFers as much as anyone on here, but Winker should’ve caught that ball and a little slide or dive was needed.

At Winkers age...I believe Dunn would’ve caught it.

If you play in the OF you are waiting every pitch for one like that....a chance to dive, slide or rob one and make the catch.

Mahle couldn't spot his breaking pitch well, and his fastball at 93mph was very hittable. Recipe for failure.
