how about this new rule....whenever Schebler is in the lineup, then Casali needs to be catching to balance out the offense.....at least until Schebler is batting his bodyweight.

I honestly think that if they are going to keep running Schebler out there then they should consider batting him lead off. At least when no one is on base he seems to show some of that patience we saw in spring training and actually try to get on base via the walk. It's quite the contrary when runners are on base where he seems hell bent on swinging at everything.

EDIT: Just looked it up, he has 10 walks this year with bases empty in 42 AB's. He has 2 walks in 29 AB's with runners on base. His OBP is .321 and .646 OPS with bases empty. With runners on base his OBP drops to .161 with and a ghastly OPS of .299! Ouch..

The LHH Dietrich is only OPSing 359 points above Peraza---Peraza with the career 0.308 OBP against RHP, deemed by the "analytic-minded" Bell to be his best option to lead-off vs. Wheeler.

With this offense absolutely blowing...save for two whole games...there are no words.

One might be forgiven for thinking that years, eons of Stubbs/Patterson/Gonzalez/Taveras in the 1 and 2 holes would have taught this team something.

Maybe Bell is expecting things to “even out” with guys moving toward their baseball cards.

Dietrich is hitting about 100 points above his lifetime OPS.
Peraza is hitting about 200 points below his lifetime OPS.

Dietrich is hitting .208 with a .306 OBP; he does have five homers; not a good fielder. Peraza had a good week. Not such a bad decision.

To be sure, Dietrich has hit better than Peraza, but I don’t think this is such a bad decision.
I do, in that it's an ongoing thing with Bell. He has Baker's old "gotta get him going" mind-set, which is fundamentally anti-analytic. Along with an obvious unwillingness to drop the veteran/regular from the line-up (Peraza/Schebler), in favor of players who were supposed to be bench guys (in the case of Dietrich).

I know RZ is split on Peraza's upside. I just can't fathom a guy who takes a single walk in 82 PA as being any sort of player you can build on. Of course, the whole thing reminds me clearly of how Price sat Gennett until Peraza flamed out two years ago.

Peraza had a .975 OPS last week - in the last six games, 16 PAs. So it’s not just “gotta get him going.” Peraza has showed definite signs.

I pitched in Montana on my Job Corps team in Darby, Montana back in the 70s.. I had a no-hitter going for a few innings until my arm decided that it wasn't up to the task then suddenly those lumberjacks hit the ball into the mountains.. lol
According to wikipedia there are 7 pro teams in Montana, Billings of course being the Reds team.. If you've never been to Billings you're not missing much unless you're underage looking to get drunk .. Of all the Montana teams I like the name of the Butte Copper Kings even if Butte is a filthy little town.. I spent quite a bit of time traveling Montana as a teenager hitch hiking around..
Jack McKeon managed the Missoula Timberkings back in the 50s They had Jim Kaat and even Charlie Pride on that team..

I would not mind an extension but I have to disagree about Roark's watchability. Even before this inning went longer, Roark just gives me heartburn with how much he needs to battle for outs.

Roark currently gets $10 million per season. Presumably he would want more than that in an extension.

I’d spend less on the BOR and more on the top part of the rotation. Castillo, Gray, and $$ guy.

Roark is 32. He is a solid pitcher, gutty guy, grinds it out.

Looks like Mike was safe there.. Nope.. Close, but not enough to overturn it.. Still good to see Lorenzen hussle down the line.. Half a step quicker and he woulda been in there..

Or one step slower for Iglesias if he's going to run into the tag! That close to 2nd, he had plenty of time to stop and if they throw to 1st, which would be the wrong play, he could easily make it to 2nd.

People always bring up attendance at home games. What do you think it is tonight in NYC? On TV, it looks like 10K tops. That blows my mind in a metro area of, what, 20M?

this inning is exactly what bad baseball teams do

Looks like the pitchers were scared to throw strikes. That's bad thinking with the big park and cool weather. Let 'em try to hit it out!
