Pitcher hitting 8th when Reds score 6 or more runs = Great performance from the Hitters
pitcher hitting 8th when Reds score 3 or less runs = Poor lineup construction.

Puzzling considering Peraza has done pretty well in his short time hitting leadoff recently. Sometimes I wonder if Bell consults with a Magic 8 ball he has on his office desk when constructing lineups.

I think the reason for Votto up first is that the Mets’ ace pitcher deGrom is going.

Peraza is hitting ok, but Bell probably thinks deGrom is a bit much for him in the lead off spot.

Not commenting on the wisdom of it, but that’s my guess why the decision was made.

I don’t know for sure but.. Votto and Geno get more ABs hitting 1 and 2
I guess Bell is hoping Peraza will be on base when Votto and Suarez come to the plate.

Disco has a low WHIP this year, not allowing too many base runners.

But five homers allowed already.

Mets announcers note a severe lefty/righty split this year, lefties hitting Disco well in the early going but not righties.

Double switch will enable Peralta to pitch a longer stint.

Nice idea by Bell who kept switching off relievers last night.

He pitched an extra third of an inning. Big deal. These early hooks by Bell do not have the rest of the game or the rest of the season in mind. His starters have been very good this yr yet Bell's been pulling 'em in the 5th/6th innings regardless. This will have ramifications later on. There's reason why there's term "managing like it's the 7th game of the World Series. In the 7th game of the WS you don't have to worry about 2 mos down the road or whether you night run out of pitchers in the 10th inning

Peralta pitched to four batters, not one or two. If he was more effective he would have pitched even longer.

And doing what every manager does because itís analytics driven is better than what managers were doing for about 50 to 100 years without the data? No one is saying letís go back to having starters gut through 7-9 innings at 120-30 pitches a start. But you need one of your starters to be allowed some starts to go longer. Having to justify all these relievers when they are not anywhere near letís say a Yankees bullpen is not the answer either.
Sometimes the best option is your starter.

And as for the Mets thanking Bell, they are scoreless through 8 innings with all the Reds’ relief usage. Not sure what they would thank the Reds for.

It’s not pulling pitchers an inning early. It’s standard for today’s game. Average start is 5+ innings. Some managers pull guys after four innings. They aren’t trained to go 7-8 innings anymore. That’s just how it is, all the stats show it.

So good teams spend money and effort having good and deep bullpens today.
