I'm fine with Barnhart hitting 9th. His hitting has been anemic..

I don't like the pitcher batting 8th

Yea, this really only made sense to me with Hamilton batting 9th. You'd want to limit his ab's because of his anemic on base ability so put him at the bottom of the order. But in the event he did get on base you'd rather have that happen with the top of the order coming up instead of the pitcher so you don't waste his speed. So bat him 9th behind the pitcher.

I don't get the thinking with Barnhart though. The only explanation I can think of is that the starting pitcher is only going to hit twice most likely and after that it's a pinch hitter or double switch situation with a hitter more capable than Barnhart. Do any other teams do this? I know LaRussa used to do it.

Is there any other NL team that regularly bats the pitcher 8th or is Bell just smarter than the other 14 managers?

This is the free game of the day on MLBTV.

With the last 11 games played against teams in the market in which I live, my FSO Reds game stream was blacked out. Tonight will be the first time in nearly two weeks that I get to hear the Reds announcers. Joy. :-|

I figure in this stretch our team ERA will regress. Good hitting teams at GABP will give a better indication of how much better this staff is than last year. A weak hitting Giants team did well in GABP. the offense should be better with the easy HRs in GABP

I like this explanation better.

“If you are putting one of your better hitters batting second, it makes sense to bat the pitcher eighth, so you have another guy in front of that guy when he comes around. Between the eighth and ninth spot if that pitcher is getting a third at-bat, he is dealing anyway so we are in a good spot. If not, the pitcher is going to get two at-bats and get out.

I'm really sick of how often guys are called out on strikes on balls off the plate. They are making split second decisions and even when they are right they get called out. It's just stupid. I really cant see any argument at this point to go against robo umps for balls and strikes.

They aren't really my style, but it's no big deal. However, I would prefer it if everyone was wearing them.

I prefer it when the shoes are uniform; either black with white logo, or black with red logo, or red with white logo--just as long as the team is on the same page.

I did too much yard work 2 days ago and now my back feels like I did too much yard work for the past week.... The only difference that Casali has going for him is babip .390 vs .206 for Barnhart,

Barnhart walks twice as much as Casali has more power higher iso.

Hes also over an .800 OPS bat so far but let's judge him on his entirely luck defendant statistic, lol. Hes pressing IMO a bit because the rest of his team cant hit and hes been put in the lead off spot. That's quite a lot of pressure for a rookie and I'd say he has handled it pretty well. You may want to check your source. Billy Bates was 3-for-14 (.214 BA) with the Brewers in 1989, and was 3-for-29 (.103 BA) with the Brewers in 1990 before the midseason trade that brought him to the Reds. It was his first (and only) hit for the Reds, as he was 0-for-5 in a September callup for the Reds.

Bates also never played in the Royals organization. He spent the entire 1991 season with Nashville (the Reds' AAA club), then played for Iowa (Cubs' AAA club) in 1992 before hanging up his spikes.

I read it wrong. It was his only hit with the Reds, he never played in. M.L. game again.

Cool. I saw that you corrected it while I was composing my post.

I was at the game in 1990 when Billy Bates raced (and beat) the cheetah.

Me too.. game 1 and 2. Had tickets to 6,7 as well. The only place to get a refund for the tickets was Fifth Third bank... No bar codes in 1990! Marge was pissed she had to give back all that money!

He will be fine.

I disagree about the pressing. He just not in a groove vs righties(timing off). It was the same in AAA. He has faired well vs lefties. (.618 ops vs R 1.257 vs L)

Also I consider .294 obp not good, Could just have kept Hamilton this year and brought up Senzel later

Just because he said his timing was off in terms of coming back from injury like three weeks ago doesn't mean that's still the case now.

Also he's been in the majors for less than two weeks, can you just chill

No offense but I don’t think it will be long before Senzel proves you wrong about keeping Hamilton and leaving him in Louisville longer

The tying run came to the plate for the Reds in the 9th inning. It sucks that they lost but I didn’t see anything that tells me they can’t compete with one of the best teams in the league.

Agreed but they continue to lack the hitting which no one thought would be an issue. Have to wonder if and when it will turn around. And also if it will be too late to make a run when it does.

I'm not so upset at the hitters as I am our pitchers who allowed their pitcher to get hits and drive in two runs-the difference in the ballgame. That is what I'm upset about. Good pitching is always there, but poor pitching beats you. Pitching was the difference today, and as good as the Reds pitching was, it wasn't good enough. It happens.

Not surprised at what happened last night. I saw Hendricks pitch an 81 pitch complete game a week or so ago against the Cardinals. He's tough on anyone and especially a team that can't seemingly hit like the Reds. It also doesn't help that Hendricks goes 3 for 4 and drives in the winning runs. Just a typical game from a last place team. I didn't watch much of the game last night. I decided to use my time and pay homage to two TV stars (Day and Conway) that recently passed by watching a few video clips of them on Youtube. I think used my time more wisely doing that.

I watched the 1990 W.S. in it's entirely the last 3 nights. It's amazing how much you forget. Billy Bates getting that infield hit of Eckersley in the 10th inningwas his FIRST ML hit....think about that. He went to the Royals in 91 and only had 26 more ML at bats....just thought I'd share. Maybe we can score some runs on 29 year old mojo.

Billy Bates had 6 major league hits before he ever played for the Reds. He didn't have any at bats with the Royals ever:
