If you get too big of a lead, they'll throw the long man in the pen to the wolves. If they really want them to abuse their pen, they'd take a lot of walks, keep the lead at 6, and then blow it open in the 8th inning.

Yes I think it has something to do with the new travel agreement with the players to not have to travel to a game the day after a Sunday night game something like that. Yes and the Reds Friday off day comes because we are playing these 2 games series home and away with the Indians so the Reds are hosting the Indians on a Saturday and Sunday

It’s bizarre. Athletes seem to be getting bigger better in every way. Maybe it’s that pitchers can’t keep up with the development in hitters. I don’t know. Gray’s not out there chucking 98MPH with regularity. Or any of the Reds’ starters for that matter.

Well if the coaches along with their FO analytics team tell these guys don’t really worry about hitting 100 pitches or stretching yourself out to do so, then this could be a reason a lot of them just tire early.

Harp much? He tells his exact strikeout total after each and every strikeout. Turns everyone’s RBI total into a mash on how many RBI Votto has.

I would put myself about average on my love of Votto....but I’m to the point I’d rather Votto go 0-4 with 8 check swings while choked up 7 inches than listen to Thom use all his energy to find a way to bash him and give his opinion that every single Reds fan knows. Harp much? He tells his exact strikeout total after each and every strikeout. Turns everyone’s RBI total into a mash on how many RBI Votto has.

We get it, we know your thoughts too. Shhhhh Thom. Quit announcing like your wife slept with Votto.

He’s exhausting.

So he found out his wife likes Canadian bacon?

My best explanation for Sonny's 70+ pitch issue is that from late June last year until the end of the season he only threw more than 80 pitches twice, so it might be a matter of building his stamina back up. I think along with the bullpen thing that's part of the thinking here, to leave him in for 100 pitches (second time in a row) in a game with a nice lead.

I know I bash Thom a lot, but he's genuinely awful at his job. I try to listen to other teams' feeds as much as possible, and there are some good ones and some bad ones, but I have yet to hear someone as bad as Thom at calling a game. He's also weirdly hyper-critical of the team and certain players (Votto, for one). And just as weirdly hyper-positive about opposing teams.

He deserves every bit of mocking and criticism.

Spot on. That’s what I go back to, I watch a lot of games and practically no other announcers act like he does. The other ones who are hard to stomach are because they’re too big of homers, none of them actively dislike their team as much as Thom and the Reds.

It’s bizarre. Athletes seem to be getting bigger better in every way. Maybe it’s that pitchers can’t keep up with the development in hitters. I don’t know. Gray’s not out there chucking 98MPH with regularity. Or any of the Reds’ starters for that matter.

Too much coddling, not enough players coming from actual farms where their bodies developed to deal with stamina in all their muscles.

Hope Reed is ok. In any event, here’s a guess about tomorrow.

1. Reed, 26th man, returns to Louisville.

2. Another pitcher, probably Lucas Sims, comes up to Reds for tomorrow.

3. To make room for Sims, Reds send down either Bowman or Van Meter. If VM, Reds with three man bench for tomorrow.

4. After tomorrow, Reds send Sims back to AAA, and call up somebody. If Bowman went down, Reds call up a pitcher. If Van Meter went down, Reds call up a position guy.

If Van Meter goes down tomorrow for Lucas Sims, could be Brian O’Grady time. Ervin just went down, VM would go down tomorrow, so neither can come back immediately. Would love to see O’Grady get a shot, he’s dominating AAA.

If a pitcher (say Bowman) goes down for Sims, wonder if Reed can replace him on Wednesday. Not sure Reed is subject to the usual ten-day rule since his appearance tonight is special status, 26th man, for a doubleheader.

If Reed can’t come back, could be who, Herget, not sure what pitcher would come up.

If all this sounds confusing, it is.

Reds announcers answer my question. Cody Reed can go to AAA tomorrow AND return on Wednesday. That’s because he is up as the 26th man so ten day rule inapplicable.

You’d do that if a pitcher (say Bowman) goes down to make room for Sims tomorrow. After Sims’ start, you then replace him with a reliever, Cody Reed.

Assuming Cody is healthy, of course.
