I know Votto has been hot lately, but I don't think he can keep it up with the way his approach is now. For some reason, he has decided to turn himself into a punch and judy hitter. A high majority of his swings do not have enough power to hit it out even if he hit on the screws and had the perfect launch angle.

Winker is pulling grounders into the shift quite often this year.

Like Votto, if Jesse uses the whole field, he’ll be fine. He should be able to make that adjustment.

The shift is a real nemesis against left handed hitters, and it’s not an automatic, easy thing to beat it.

When Winker pulls the ball this year, Jesse is OPSing .630 with a .212 BABIP.

When he goes up the middle this year, Jesse is OPSing .815 with a .255 BABIP.

WHen he goes to the opposite side, Jesse is OPSing 1.294 with a .276 BABIP.

Roark really reminds me of Bronson Arroyo. Not physically, but his ability to pitch out of jams, he doesn’t get phased when behind, a real pro.

There are some ominous stats here, he’s not a 3.00 ERA pitcher, very high LD rate against him so far. We could see some regression.

Remember the stuff about Bell being an idiot for not starting Winker against LHP? :scared:

I still think he's above average bat, but there's no shame in platooning him. It would also help mitigate the damage he does defensively. He's not a Senzel-level talent where you live with the uneven splits as a youngster in hopes that they eventually even out.

And I think there's something to that idea but it's moreso just a feeling or hunch than a science, and if you're really trying to win ballgames platoon splits aren't something you can ignore.

Who has the most? Don Gullet?

The leader is kind of a trick. According to Baseball-Reference.com, Ernie Lombardi wore #35 for only one season--1938, and he hit 19 HR's that year.

Frank Pastore is second with 2.

Don Gullett never hit a home run in the regular season. (He did hit one in the 1975 NLCS, however.)

It's why they need to pursue upgrades even though there aren't obvious holes. I still think a starter and a reliever are needed. The Reds just won't be able to go on a long winning streak with this staff. The starters don't go deep in games and the good relievers just can't pitch enough days in a row to reel off 5 or 6 games in a row. It's going to be win one or two, lose a couple all year as currently constructed.
