Geno is hitting .077 with 1 HR and 2 RBI in 13 AB’s vs Scherzer.

I guess if you’re gonna give Geno a rest before heading into St. Louis, today is just as good a day as any.

I had hoped for better from Winker. Seems like another guy that got hot in April and then it's over. I guess the NL has figured him out and he hasn't been able to adjust. Had one HR in early May. Bunches of easy ground balls to the left side. Some of them DP's. See yesterday. Bell is giving him more than enough chances to resume his April form. The bad thing is he is poor defensively and slow.

As for Puig, I know he usually warms up when the weather gets hot, but how long does Bell watch him fail in RBI situations with a K.
These two guys should be on a short leash. Dietrich and Irvin can play the OF. Farmer too.

I dont like sitting Suarez no matter who the pitcher is. Especially with an off day tomorrow. Maybe his hand is sore but otherwise he should be in there. Hopefully the lefty stacking works out though.

Offensive leaders for the 1919 Reds:

CF Edd Roush: .321/.380/.431/.811, 4 HR, 71 RBI
3B Heinie Groh: .310/.392/.431/.823, 5 HR, 63 RBI

Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Earle "Greasy" Neale, head coach of the 1948 & 1949 NFL Champion Philadelphia Eagles, was the starting RF for the Reds that year.

How Eller, Dutch Ruether, and Slim Sallee led the Reds pitching staff in 1919, as Eller's 2.39 ERA was the highest among all Reds starters.

Backup OF Rube Bressler (who played 42 games in LF and 6 in RF) also pitched in 13 games, including 4 starts and 1 complete game. His 3.46 ERA in 41.2 IP was highest on the team, but he also had a miniscule 1.080 WHIP.

Interesting to double switch by moving the pitcher, Lorenzen, to left field. Any thoughts of Lorenzen coming back to pitch? Doubt it.

Seems like a typical double switch except no need to use a position player off the short bench. Lorenzen can handle LF. Gives Bell more bench flexibility going forward in the game.

THom tells us that Michael Lorenzen is the first Red to pitch 10+ innings and play 10+ innings in the field since 1944, but he doesn't tell us who that was. I hate it when announcers do that.

So I looked it up. Buck Fausett was a 3B/P who played for the Reds in 1944 (his only season in the majors). He started six games at 3B and made two relief appearances on the mound, pitching 10.2 innings.

I see a lot more generous strike zone calls for Scherzer today than for the Reds pitchers. Votto just struck out looking on three straight pitches. Gameday, with it's cameras tracking the pitches, shows two out of the three were outside the strike zone.

It is time for automated ball and strike calls....

You donít tank, but you come to terms with reality that youíve been in the basement for two months, and if youíre splitting and losing series to the likes of the Pirates and Nationals, your odds of climbing the ladder are not very high. Both of those clubs have been a dumpster fire prior to playing the Reds.

I donít think ďstop being a last place teamĒ is the goal. The idea is to get into contention. You do that by acquiring more talent.

Iglesias may be able to get you to 4th place this year, borderline 3rd. Is that worth anything tangible when you might be able to pull a good player for him? Another Luis Castillo perhaps or a Eugenio Suarez? The Reds got those guys for next to nothing. Iglesias, even when a bit disappointing, will command someone who may turn into a difference maker in this trade market.

Two times 0-2 count hits to drive in runs hurt today. I really would like Barnhart to be more forecful to set up off the plate to put pressure on the hitter instead of calling for pitches over the plate. That last one with Iglesias he didnt tell Iglesias to bury that 0-2 off tge plate in the dirt but setup over the outside part of the plate.

I believe Reds and many fans care more about 2019 than that. Even if it’s not a playoff team, this whole season is about winning as much as possible. It is not the time to have a weakened bullpen by trading the closer undoubtedly for prospects.

mth123

Today was about a Hall of Fame pitcher shutting down the reds offense. But if you look, you can see the underlying issue that will stop the Reds from putting up a long winning streak. They gave up four runs. The starter only gave up 2. Still they used 5 relievers to get through the game. The starter didn't give enough innings and when you go to the pen 5 times, you're pretty likely to find a pitcher who just doesn't have it that day. Today it was Hernandez and Iglesias. Until they get at least one more frontline starter who won't need 5 relievers even when he's pitching well and at least one more high end reliever so there are always good relievers available when they are ahead, I just don't see how they can string together 5 or 6 wins in a row.

If you're saying that they need another starter because Sonny Gray can't give them innings then they got bigger problems than that. They invested a decent prospect, a high draft pick and about $40 million in this guy. If he needs to be replaced then we're in big trouble.

I think a more palatable issue here in the manager and how he's blowing through pitchers on a nightly basis. He needs to understand the ramifications of using 5 relievers on one day. You mentioned one. Another is fatigue and burnout over the course of a long season. That's not a good way to manage

Gray doesn't need to be replaced. He's a fine part of a rotation, but he's a role player and not a lead dog. The investment wasn't much. The minor leaguer is more suspect than prospect IMO and the money over the time he's signed for isn't out of line with what he provides (and probably a bargain compared to others guys who cost that much). As a 3rd or 4th starter, he's fine, but it doesn't work when the other guys aren't as good as him. Disco is the guy who needs replaced.

Too much Max Scherzer today. The guy is one of the best, maybe the best, in the game. You can't expect to get too much off him. Big play of the game was Winker's lineout after the back to back doubles. If that ball goes up the alley then who knows what may happen? Other than that, they couldn't touch Scherzer. Yes the HP umpire got a bit of a wide strike zone in the 8th. But you know what, as long as humans call balls and strikes you had better take the bat off your shoulder and swing if the pitch is close. Just disgusting to watch batters, not only with the Reds but all over MLB, take third strikes like they do in today's game. I just don't understand it?

I will also add this, Max Scherzer could pitch for me anytime he wanted. Just a flat out great competitor. He never wants out of a game and will do anything to win. I would almost kill to have a pitcher like that for the Reds. It's been a long time since the Reds have anyone close to him.

No shame in losing to their pitcher. The shame was on the bullpen who can't stop any team lately. Overuse? Beats me, but starters only going five innings and at this rate, the pen will be so tired by the AS break that winning will be impossible. I still have faith, but the handling of pitchers is head shaking.

I agree in general, but I could make a case that the handling of these pitchers is the smoke and mirrors that have made such a low ceiling group so effective to this point in the year. They are a team with Castillo, Iglesias and a bunch of back end starters and middle relievers (though Garrett is becoming more of an elite high leverage guy). They need a frontline starter who can take some heat off the pen once in a while and another high end reliever (maybe two) who might give them enough guys who can actually hold a lead when the time comes. I think Hughes and Hernandez look used up and need to fall beck to lesser, lower leverage roles. There are three relievers on this team that I have confidence in and those are Lorenzen, Garrett and Iglesias and I'm not completely sold on Lorenzen. Bowman might be the next best at this point. Hughes should be in the long relief role and I'd give Hernandez a week or two off and see if he can come back strong with the rest. He was their best guy for a stretch, but he seemed to pitch every day and now he's not as effective. IF they can't get Hernandez back to where he was, they definitely need two high leverage relievers.

Why use a game started by Gray to make the point that Disco needs to be replaced? Replacing Disco won't make Gray pitch more innings.

The point is this: The kind of starter you covet isn't easy to acquire. Even Sonny Gray had a big pricetag. I think they need to look at in house options first like Sims.

The point is that Gray is their second best starter and that isn't good enough for somebody who slots there. This team has it's Cueto (Castillo), Bailey (Gray), Arroyo (Roark) and Leake (Mahle). They need to push Josh Fogg (Disco) aside and go get their Latos.

Good point. I'm not excited about another Latos deal. They pretty much traded 4 1st rd picks (Volquez had 1st rd talent
) for him. This team can't afford to trade 4 1st rd picks for anyone. That's far too pricey for a small market team.

Volquez was not a “first round talent” at the time the Reds traded him, he was basically completely falling apart. He had no value, he was a throw in.

Well, Latos was pre-arb with 4 years of control remaining. That's why he cost so much talentwise. The Reds need to target a similar talent with maybe a different contract situation. They have a ton of money coming off the books and can take on a contract. Greinke still makes sense to me but I doubt he's available, but as the season wears on, some names will become available. Money seems to be what the Reds have available though. They have about $60 Million coming off the books after the season.

Well he was our Game 1 starter in the 2010 playoffs and he's still in the league today at age 35. I agree with you that I didn't mind losing him as much as the other 3.

It was an awfully high price to pay as all 4 of those guys went on to have long MLB careers. The blueprint for a team like the Reds has to be one that is receiving 4 talents like that, not trading them.

Teams like the Reds don't acquire Greinke types. That's not how the Brewers won the division or how the Royals won their WS. Bear in mind, I'm not talking 2 mo rentals here.

IIRC, the Royals did acquire Johnny Cueto in mid season.
