Great, the annual awful June trip to Philadelphia is upon us. Sadly about as common as the disastrous interleague set with Oakland or NYY/ Boston. Hopefully it will be different this year as I will not be in NJ visiting my parents this weekend and able to watch it on TV.

A buddy of mine is a former high school head football coach, and is currently an assistant college coach at the Division III level. The first time he ever saw Puig (back when he was a rookie for the Dodgers), he said to me, "That guy is from another country, right?" I replied, "Yes, he's from Cuba." He was the last out of the last inning made perfect sense to double switch there. It's not his fault peraza can't trow the ball 90 feet.

How did it make sense? Maybe don't take your shortstop out for no reason. Dumb

Exactly. You could just pinch hit the dude. Hernandez is unlikely to be needed again considering we are losing and it's the bottom of the 8th. Unnecessary double switch and you remove a gold glove caliber player for a below average cold player.

I'm assuming that the idea is that Hernandez would stay in to pitch the bottom of the 9th should the Reds tie the game.

Reds have handed 2 runs to the Phillies tonight when they cant manage to score more then 2 on offense lately. That ain't gonna cut it.

Maybe we'll get lucky, the impossible happens and we get back to back to back homeruns and a 1, 2, 3 from Iglesias.. An old man can dream..

I would be cool with that. If you want to double switch, you could remove Winker or Puig, and the pitcher would be due up 7th or 8th the next inning.

Looks like the run is happening but unfortunately it's a losing run. We may be out of it by the end of next week. There good run may have been the slightly above average ball they played since the poor start. Hopefully I am wrong. Depressing loss tonight. Offense a no show once again.

It was the best of times defensively to keep them in the game for a time, and the worst of times defensively that took them out of it.

Who would go? Peraza and Barnhart are here to stay. Even the Great Kremchek can't slice them off this roster.

Looks to me like a lot of the defensive misplays are more than minimally attribuatable to unfamiliarity with where their team mates are as the play develops. Like that one, Tucker sees the runner off and goes to throw and as he is in the process, he realizes Suarez is too far off third and tries to modify his target and throws it way to far to the right. Other times the infield shift causes them to not realize where their team mates are going to be making some awkward efforts for force plays.

When you are behind you need to risk some things to have a better chance to score, like risking defense or pinch hitting for a starter who is doing well.

How did that improve their chance to score? All it did was remove their shortstop and best defensive player at a crucial time and it cost them a run.

The taking naps angle has already been played out when Walt was running things.

They have been more pro active than when Walt was running things.

They've given up the 2nd fewest runs in Major League Baseball. So the run prevention has been better than good.

he subbed out a good hitter and gold glove defender down a run to put in an inferior hitter and defender than other available pinch hitters and it was unlikely that he would need Hernandez for multiple innings. He uses the double switch most times with seemingly little consideration to the situation. Tinkering fir tinkering's sake.

yes, MLB is shifting themselves to death, misapplying data to get guys where balls are hit without much regard for the collateral damage it causes. Data can be a dangerous thing. Shifts with bases empty on spray chart data makes sense. With guys on base, its really screwing up assignments. I think that is a great point you make.
