I imagine part of it is rewarding Ervin for his big hits lately, and he does have a HR off of Anderson, but I agree with you. I'd go with Winker/Dietrich.

You have to figure the Brewers are going to test him early and often if they get the chance. Maybe Roark can pitch a perfect game?

Based on the one game he caught in spring training, Farmer is decent at throwing out would be base stealers, but has difficulty blocking the plate, and with just catching in general. Though, he probably isn’t much worse than Casali in that area.

I hate it when my physiognomy readings (in this case about Bell) are so damned accurate.

Last night he gave us Peraza...the Human White Flag...over Farmer to finish the night off. That after failing to have any Plan B in case Hernandez wasn't lights out.

Not. The. Guy.

Hopefully Bell push the right buttons tonight with the heavy right-handed lineup. He owes the team some good decisions at the last night. I'm sure the big scheme of things and play doesn't matter but just relax slim chance of something crazy happening the Reds really need to win tonight

So apparently no matter what Winker does he’s never going to get a chance against lefties, but Ervin gets hot for a handful of games, mostly against lefties, and now he’s starting over Winker against righties. It must be more important to develop Ervin than it is Winker, huh?

I don’t get what Bell’s got against him, but Jesse’s gotta be getting pretty pissed at this point.

Pretty basic stuff. Ervin right now is coming in with the hot bat hitting .412 over his last 7 games. You don't sit a .412 hitter and he's hit .279 against Anderson. I doubt it has anything to do with much else. Jesse over his last 7 has been .278. The math is on Ervin's side here.

Ervin is 3 for 22 vs RHP this year. The only thing on his side is a manager trying to shown everyone how clever he is.

I think this actually undersells it. I wanna say they shot the thing back in like 2009, and that's when we started hearing it was in post-production and we'd see it soon. At some point that stopped being a real statement and became a gag (maybe FS Ohio decided the quality wasn't good enough to air in full?), and they really picked it back up around the time it was obvious that Cueto was going to be traded.

It's just one masher after another. They have like 4 or 5 guys having better seasons then anyone on the Reds. Sure, somedays you will get a great pitching performance but usually its gonna look more like this and the offense has got to do better.

Also the uptick in HRs at GABP lately is pretty concerning. By my count, Reds pitching has allowed 11 so far on this homestand. You've said before that but realistically, where was the gaping hole on paper? I think the general consensus was the offense should be fine and the pitching would need to take a step forward. Instead the offense has seen a bunch of performance collapse and the pitching has been very good. I don't know that the offense was a planning problem so much as it was an execution problem.

no. i've always felt that. i'm not referring to numbers. i just have more confidence in him. i think it's because his name has a vibe. maybe it's the V. i've bought cars on similar gut feelings. i don't back up everything with stats. baseball invites us to consider wider, aesthetic aspects of players and teams. otherwise a cpa could manage the teams.

The implication here being that Ervin's amazing .728 OPS last year should have automatically earned him not only a roster spot with the Reds but a starting role?

I don't get this canonizing of Ervin. He's a perfectly useable little player, but he's not a better option than Winker/Senzel/Puig.
