I must once again voice my disapproval of the pitcher batting 8th.

Why is it being done some days and not others? What is the logic behind it?

It might make some sense if you had Casali 7th and Peraza 9th.

Just out of curiosity why is that? I totally agree it makes no sense for the catcher to bat 9th

I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t throw anything juicy to Senzel considering what’s behind him....Casali could’ve provided at least a little protection

I don’t know why they continue to start Peraza. We have to go on a run at some point to move up in the standings and we keep running him out there and sitting better players. We have an off day tomorrow, then two games and then the all star break. I would think professional athletes could play through that without needing a game off. It’s not like we’re at the tail end of 22 straight games in August. We need to play the best lineup now because the buy/sell decision will have to be made in the next few weeks.

Normally, I wouldn't break into the game thread with minor league stuff. But this is unbelievable. The DSL-Reds' pitchers walked the first EIGHT batters that came to the plate in the top of the 6th.:eek:

Since statistically the number 8 hole will come up more than the nine, Bell is doing it to enhance his opportunities to make double switches. This will intimidate the opposition, seeing that they are truly not on the same level strategically speaking.
If he did it every day, other teams might catch on and do it too. By the time they have figured out what’s going on, the Reds will already have won the pennant.
I don’t know. Doesn’t make since to me either.

With zero LHP available today against the LHH-heavy Brewers lineup, I look forward to the day when the Reds actually have a LHP or three that they drafted ready to contribute in Cincinnati.

Garrett (round 22) has been one of only a handful that Buckley drafted in the past 20 or so years. Thank God he's no longer in charge of the draft.

LHPs Moss (round 4) and Naughton (round 9) have performed decently so far, and appear to be immune to whatever disease has laid waste to most every other (RHP) pitcher in the minors.

Not too much you can do when 3 of your lefties hit the DL. If every team had a reserve LHP they could call up to pitch effectively bullpens around the league would probably be performing better.

The worst hitter should bat 9th, as that spot in the order comes to the plate less often than any other. As bad as Peraza (or prior to this year, Hamilton) might be, he is still a better hitter than the pitcher.

I don’t see a lot of loafing....I definitely didn’t like him letting up and costing himself a hit and Reds a baserunner. I’m more bothered that he is often caught off guard on line drives and balls off bat as to where infielders and OF are positioned and he gets horrible first steps after his secondary leads, which are bad. I’ve said many times he’s the worst baserunning superstar I can think of.

yeah, not the best work there. and i want to like ervin. i want to believe he can be a decent #4 outfielder for this club.
He can be. Coming off the bench against a lefthander who looks like he's trying to pull the ball out of his jersey might not be the best measure of judging Ervin... or anyone. He's had plenty of decent at bats before that.

I think it's just the tension of knowing how big this game is. The fact that they're only 4.5 out, and can get a game closer is crazy.

23 consecutive scoreless innings against that team. Yes the game has ups and downs and sometimes you hit someone who's down. But you still have to do it and when guys like Yelich, Thames, Moustakas, and others can leave the park with one swing that's pretty impressive regardless. Grandal and their new guy in there as well.

You know... One might think the Reds surprise pitching staff would be all over MLB.com, but yet hardly a peep.. I guess they have to get back to back to back to back no hitters and 15 HRs per game or something.. It's still nice to fly under the radar anyway..
Heck, just 3.5 back in last place beats EVERY last place team by HUGE margins and the only one of two even in 4th place with a + run differential. The Halo's are at +7 @ 11 games out in 4th place.. This should be BIG news in baseball..

In other news the Reds aren't the only NLC team losing it's temper over the Pirates throwing at hitters. Maddon was just tossed for yelling into the Pirates dug out, probably telling Hurdle what punks he and his pitching staff are.. I'm sure the exact words might get me tossed from this site come to think about it..

I have to call myself an idiot. It's Independence Day, so I did the whole thing--parades, activities, etc., thinking the game was at 7:10. Why, I don't know. So, with the satellite still tuned to FSO, I turn it on, thinking I'd only miss a little bit. Instead I saw the three outs, the fantastic Irvin catch, and the end of the 3-1 series win. Unfortunately while the Cubs and Brewers are faltering, last place is where we seem to be stuck in since the Pirates are playing the once hapless Cubs. just part of being a reds fan, I guess. Good win. Big win.

The thing is, when last place has you 3.5 games out of first I don't think it really matters like it generally does. I don't think we should have any illusions of a World Series appearance or even first place with 4 other teams in front of us. But, just play well with hopefully a little more offensive production and let the rest take care of itself. And the offense isn't awful. Needs improvement without a doubt. But we scored 6 runs and 5 runs the first 2 games of this series and had enough hits to generate more than 1 run on most days in this game. Woodruff has a great arm and is clearly their most talented starter.

In the dog days of August and September, the teams that can run a reliable starter out there day after day generally comes out the winner.

We saw the Griffey Reds stay close for half a season sometimes and then fade badly down the stretch for that very reason.

The Reds pitching staff has given up the least amount of runs in the NL so far. If that continues, we'll be in the playoffs. Winker, Votto and Puig are all hitting these days, so our offense will be at least league average.

Agree. Also why this team *needs* Alex Wood to get healthy and be able to contribute. Barring getting a starter at the deadline, there is no margin for error should one of the starters get injured. This team needs great health and/or some infusion of arms to truly compete.

The starting pitching seems to be getting better. If it continues this trend that should be good for the rest of the season. This team is on the right road to urn the corner. If they turn that corner then they have a good shot at the playoffs.

Holding down a Brewer offense like they did is very impressive. No one else has done that this season.

They've been fortunate to be healthy (knock on wood) as there appears to be no help in AA or AAA. The Sims start was a fluke. Asking him to be average, at best, seems to be asking for help. We'll have to trade hitting for pitching or else trade pitching prospects below AA for help, which is incredibly stupid. We have hitting throughout the organization where players are blocked at multiple levels. That's where the help is going to have to come from.

If you find yourself waiting on Wood, you'll run out of time.

The sad part is - I'm older then your Mom son! LOL

Here's what's funny .... Read the first page or two, pre-game, and listen to people questioning pretty much everything - manager's lineup .... why is this player(s) starting? ... the batting order.... what's wrong with Bell? We're trying to win games here!

Final score: Reds 1 Brewers 0

And one of those players someone didn't want to start made a game changing catch in the 9th, no outs, and Yelich on 2B. Go figure and GO REDS!
