Without Senzel...whew it’s rough up top

1. Winker
2. Votto
3. Suarez

Those are literally 3 of the worst baserunners in MLB

Winker and Votto aren’t getting on base anywhere near what they usually do and when they do they have awful
Baserunning instincts to make their slow feet even more of an issue. Votto might be the worst at reading if a ball is going to drop or not.

No real fix with what’s available.....barring a 3 run HR or 4 hits in an inning it’s impossible to score multiple runs it seems. Batting the 5th string catcher 9th gives them 4 super slow guys in a row

Easy to see why they are the worst baserunning team in MLB. Frustrating to watch.

I agree Joey votto's baserunning in the third inning last night with a joke

Just in general. His jumps on contact show that he doesn’t know where the infielders and outfielders are located.

Last night when Suarez hit that ball to the warning track...it was understandable that he wasn’t sure at first it was going to be caught but replay showed Votto about 8 feet off 2nd and standing up looking? When is that ever the play? He wasn’t in position to break quickly and score on a missed ball near the CF wall....he drifted some towards SS and then ball caught went back towards 2nd. That baserunning play wasn’t textbook obvious/easy but it certainly required quick baseball running movements from a ready position....and he was standing with hands on his hips.

I understand his skills are declining and I know he prepares his ass off....so I’m ok with his slugging % being in the bottom 14% of MLB. But it’s bothersome to me to watch someone who values getting on base more than any player I’ve ever seen ....but doesn’t do hardly anything necessary to greater his potential of scoring once he gets on base.

It’s really not a bad idea when you have guys with power like Senzel or Winker leading off, the 9th place hitter is likely going to get on base more often than the pitcher, and it’s not like protecting Jose Iglesias really matters.

It's not about protecting Jose Iglesias. It's about short-circuiting any potential rally that the lower half of the order starts because the worst hitter in the lineup came to the plate too soon.

Batting your worst hitter anywhere but 9th is a terrible idea -- especially in the NL, where there is a huge chasm between the worst hitter and the second-worst hitter.

51% ground ball rate. 41% pull rate. Pulls grounders too often. But he can re-adjust, the league has simply caught up with his tendencies, like in a sophomore slump.

I thought the Empire(Umpire) took a lot from Geno after the K. But when a player comes out of the dugout the next inning, an Ump has no choice.
True, Torres isn't a very good Ump.

Which they would have anyway. Either they would have non-tendered him after 2009, or he would have left as a free agent before he ever turned himself around. He just wasn't that good as a Red, and there was no reason to believe he was going to improve. He was a right-handed hitting Willie Greene.

I am grateful they were able to turn him into Scott Rolen.

But the Reds missed out on about 337 HRS.

This argument is nonsensical. EE couldn't play 3b, the 3b they got helped get the team to the playoffs in 2010 and 2012 and provided leadership, and the 1b at the time of the deal was this kid who went on to win an MVP and come in second another year. Any announcer who brings this up and broadcasts Reds games should be fired, not for the opinion, but for their lack of knowledge.

You know who the Reds gave up on too early? Tony Perez, and Frank Robinson.

But the Reds missed out on about 337 HRS.

Where exactly were they supposed to play him? He wasn't a good defensive 3B and an 103 OPS+ as a Red wasn't getting it done.

He hasn't played 3B regularly since 2010. There's no DH in the NL and the only other position he's played is 1B. Something tells me he wouldn't have cut it there the past decade either...

Votto did it the other night.
Lack of leadership from your best players may be a problem.

Seriously? Votto got tossed with the team up by 6 runs in the 9th. Could there be a better time for him to be rung up? The odds of a game having a negative outcome because Votto isn't there to play defense for the bottom of the ninth are probably as close to zero as you can get. Suarez getting tossed in the first however is not the best timing

Quality starts are a borderline useless statistic.
