Yesterday's game with the bases loaded and nobody out and we get a pop up from Puig followed by 2 strikeouts. I was thinking Peraza is a guy who probably could have found a way to put the bat on the ball and get that run in from 3rd. Just hit it somewhere except "straight up in the air"

So now Votto is gripping the bat back down at the knob. He has been late on pitches all year and things making his swing longer is going to help...lol. On average it takes for every 1/2 inch of bat length the distance to square increase by 3%. If you have a youth player making solid contact but always to the opposite field or just foul, shorten their bat.

whoa, votto getting mad at gray like that is bush league. gray had the base stolen. no need for joey to swing if he didn't want to. then he completely shows up sonny with his reaction? weak.

joey needs to worry about himself (e.g. not stinking up the joint) and less about sonny gray, who is one of the few guys pulling their weight on this team.

Votto you prima donna. Concentrate on hitting the ball, not what the runners are doing. Unless the hit and run sign was on you do not have to swing.

Ironman92

Guessing Gray was going to 3rd....probably had a big shift and he thought it was easy money

Sonny should be mad Votto half ass swung again

Players are allowed to steal bases. He was running before the pitcher released the ball....why did that make Joey swing with no strikes???

Stealing third with 2 out?

newsflash, there's many more ways to score from third than second with two outs. gray had the base stolen. and votto didn't have to swing (half-swing as usual) if he didn't want to.

Coachforyears
07-22-2019, 08:58 PM
exactly correct. Votto is a prima donna that should be gone. Looking at the replay both runners would have been safe by a mile. Then Joey could have made an easy out with 2 in scoring position instead of just one..

He probably caught it out of the corner of his eye at the last moment. Hitters don't like it for that very reason, as it can screw up their swing after they're already committed.

That's especially true when you're not expecting it and I'm guessing Gray stealing 3B would be a huge shocker.

Yes Senzel was coached right at a young age. When the lead runner goes, you go as well.

One of my favorite calls as a coach was having runners on first and second. Have the batter "Square and Take" and send the runners. Result runners on second and third no outs.

I think Gray left on his own and Senzel did as he was coached: when you see the guy in front of you going, you take off as well. I don't think it was a called play.

If runners going bothers Votto then he ought not be hitting second

I think he was still stewing about his foul pop out short of 3rd last time and just locked in focused like crazy and that affected him...but clueless as how it caused him to swing lol

2 at bats and 2 terrible swings...that eats at Joe. He’s wired different but he can’t be mad at a runner running when his team can’t score and he’s not been driving much in. The guy is struggling. No clue why Bell hasn’t given him a day or two off to try to help him.

I’ll take your word for it but I’ve never heard that.

But....if a hitter is locked in on the pitcher and doesn’t see a runner at 2nd or say defenders in that same line of eye site.....and doesn’t see runner take off to 3rd before release of ball and now he sees a runner that’s maybe 5-10 feet out of his direct line of site? His line of site isn’t changing from arm slot release to where ball might be when he decides whether or not to swing.

Regardless can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone but Votto be all perturbed about it.

Votto clearly isn't his old self. But he's more than earned to have a few controllable things, like base runners standing still, when he's batting. This is still his team.

i respectfully disagree.

I've never heard of it either. Which ML hitters tell us this?
