Honestly, I know that I beat this to death, but why is Lavarnway batting 9th? The only logical reason I can find is that Bell actually thinks our pitchers are better hitters than Lavarnway. Case in point: Lavarnway was batting 9th in yesterday's lineup, and then when Barnhart was activated he was inserted into the lineup in the 8th spot with the pitcher batting 9th. What gives?

Here are two possible answers, related.

1. In the middle of this game, says inning 6, Bell may need to pinch hit. He’d rather hit for Disco who only works about 5-6 innings anyway. He wants Barnhart to rest, he’s been hurt, so Bell is “protecting” the catcher spot by hitting Lavarnway ninth.

2. If the game is close/late in a big spot, Bell would rather bat a pinch hitter for the pitcher’s spot than bat Lavarnway. He’s rather use, say, Ervin or Gennett. So he puts the pitcher’s spot ahead of Lavarnway to facilitate a pinch hitter before Lavarnway comes up.

It is very simple batting your worse hitter(opb) 8th results in scoring the most runs. It gives your best hitters the most opportunity to drive in runs which will result in the most runs scoring.

Also in modern baseball this position will likely be filled by a pinch hitter since starters do not go deep in games anymore.

No, Jeff Piecoro, 1967 was not Tony Perez's best year -- 1970 was.

1967:

1970:
.317/.401/.589/.990, 40 HR's, 129 RBI's
