they're finally figuring what they've got with ervin and galvis. of course, peraza in the lineup and disco pitching sorta cancels that out. with suarez hurt i suppose they dont have much choice.

Tonight the Reds will be wearing 1976 throwbacks.

The 1976 Reds were 102-60, winning the NL West by 10 games over the Dodgers, sweeping the Phillies 3-0 in the NLCS, and winning their second consecutive World Series Championship with a 4-0 sweep of the Yankees. The Reds were managed by 42-year-old George "Sparky" Anderson.

On August 17, 1976, the Reds lost 3-2 to the Braves at Riverfront Stadium. The Reds lineup that night:

Pete Rose 3b
Ken Griffey rf
Joe Morgan 2b
George Foster lf
Tony Perez 1b

Yes, from 1972 through 1984 the uniform was unchanged. In 1985, they made a very slight change in the block number font (it was difficult to tell the difference, but the "2" was most noticable) -- but otherwise it was unchanged. In 1988, they added red stripes down the pantlegs, and outlined the red numbers and lettering on the gray road jerseys in white, but otherwise it was still the same, and it stayed that way from 1988 through 1992. In 1993, they made significant changes, going with button-up uniforms, sleeveless home jerseys, and pinstripes. They also introduced a white home cap with red pinstripes.

So from 1972 through 1992, it was essentially the same uniform, with only a couple of minor changes.

OK, my opinions on today's 1976 throwbacks:

Caps: Outstanding, but the C looks slightly larger than I remember it. Still, very good!

Jerseys: Perfect! The font for the numbers and the "oversized" names on the backs are exactly right! The Bicentennial commemorative patch is a nice touch!

Pants: Very good! Nobody is wearing his pantlegs around the ankles. If anything, some of the players are wearing them too high!

Socks: Very good. Would have been better if everyone would have worn stirrups, and at the proper height. Also, black shoes would have been nice.

Overall: This is definitely the BRM uniform! Of course, the pullover jerseys were a product of the 70's, but the unbridled success that the Reds had back then will always make these a fan favorite! But this is the uniform I grew up with, so I will always have a soft spot in my heart for them!

I would have preferred to have kept O'Neill, because the Reds were too RHH heavy in 1993. But I don't think he would ever have become the Yankees version of O'Neill had he stayed in Cincinnati -- he would have just remained the Reds version of O'Neill.

Why does Thom think Loremzen needs more at bats than the MLb hitters on the bench? I get using him like that at bat go stay in the game. He’ll be handy in extra innings but he doesn’t need to be taking at bats from other players. He needs to focus on pitching.

Yup.. Both were pretty darned good. O'Neil was still muddling around .246 while Kelly was hitting .272.. Both of their careers kind of took off that season. Kelly hit .319 that season while O'Neil was .311.. I dunno.. I would have liked to keep Kelly anyway since O'Neil was already in NY.

But this is the uniform I grew up with, so I will always have a soft spot in my heart for them!

me too. i think teams changing their look every 3 years or less cheapens the franchise. you cant get classier than the 76 unis. they should never have tinkered with them. teams like the dodgers, yankees and red sox dont.

A relief pitcher with 3 pitches! Great defensive play, except the error which didn't haunt, but caused Disco extra pitches. Keys were Disco getting out of the 5th unscathed, helped in very large part by the throw out at 3rd by Senzel to Peraza, Galvis 2 strike SF, and the 3 run record breaking HR to open up the margin. Very good game and very good win. Reds need to win the 4 games series tomorrow like they failed to last Sunday.

I liked the 61's best followed by the 69-70's and the uniforms with the blue on it (forget which year) all need more red. 69-70? uniforms lack enough red for me, that's why I love vests.

I have to get an exterminator in soon. We have social (swarming) ground yellowjackets in the back garden, which I avoid because I'm allergic - I carry epipens at all times - but my wife was working in a side garde, and got swarmed. She figures 10 or more, 3 stings, saved from more by happening to wear loose-fitting clothing. One of 'em was stuck into her sleeve, which we saved to show the exterminator folks.
