I know I am wishful thinking, but a sweep of both Marlins and Pirates coming up would that put us in striking distance or has the ship sailed?

I know I am wishful thinking, but a sweep of both Marlins and Pirates coming up would that put us in striking distance or has the ship sailed?

A sweep would make the last 5 weeks fun, but we would have to win 7 more games than the Cards, Cubs, Brewers to get a division win and 7 more games than the Cubs, Brewers, Phillies, Mets, Giants and DBacks to sneak into a wildcard spot. Mathematically possible, but not realistic. Let's just win one today!

Today, the Reds are wearing the 1990 throwbacks. The Reds were 91-71 in 1990, winning the NL West by 5 games over the Dodgers. The Reds defeated the Pirates 4-2 in a very competitive and exciting NLCS, and swept the Athletics 4-0 to claim their fifth World Series Championship. The Reds were managed by Lou Piniella.

On August 18, 1990, the Reds lost to the Pirates 3-1 at Riverfront Stadium. The Reds starting lineup that afternoon:

Barry Larkin ss
Mariano Duncan 2b
Chris Sabo 3b
Eric Davis cf
Glenn Braggs rf
Hal Morris 1b
Billy Hatcher lf
Joe Oliver c

OK, my opinions on the 1990 throwback uniforms:

Caps: Very good! The same cap as they wore last night with the 1976 unis. The "C" is a little too large -- I have a 1992 cap (which is identical to what they wore in 1990, except for the MLB logo on the back), and the "C" on it is smaller.

Jerseys: Outstanding! Again, it is very similar to last night's uniform. The only changes are a second red stripe on the cuff of the sleeve, and a slight change in the font of the block numbers. Also, the numbers on the back are slightly larger, and the lettering is slightly smaller than the 1976 version.

Pants: Very good! The Reds added two red stripes down the legs in 1988; otherwise, no change from last night.

Socks: Pretty good. The Reds had relaxed their rule on stirrups by 1990 -- some players even wore the softball-style "2-in-1" socks in '90. But the uniform still looks better with stirrups. The Reds had also relaxed their rule on shoes by 1990, allowing red shoes with white logo.

Overall: Aesthetically very similar to the 1976 BRM uniform, with slight differences. (I do wish they had worn the gray road 1990 uniform today, since the home whites are so similar to the 1976 uniform.) But this uniform is very special to me. I was 20 years old in 1990, and though the BRM holds legendary status in Reds history, the 1990 team was MY team! A lot of special memories...
