Using your only other catcher at 1B seems to be asking for trouble, Farmer has been good against LHP but I'd just as soon give JVM the start there.

what type of trouble? Just seeing if I am missing something, but if something happened to Tucker, then Farmer could just move to catcher? Are you suggesting if they both were injured?

Yes. It also locks you in to needing both of them to play all 9 innings.

I was looking at Lauer's splits, and he has been significantly worse on the road. He has a 3.10 ERA @ Home and a 6.20 ERA on the road. Also since the All Star break his overall ERA is 6.56 compared to 4.04 before the break. Too bad we are down a couple left handed bats in the lineup, because he has got rocked by left handed batters this year.

Yes. It also locks you in to needing both of them to play all 9 innings.

It doesn't. Barnhart could be subbed out in the 6th inning, Farmer slides to catcher, and JVM inserted to 1B after pinch-hitting vs a RHP

Yeah but I meant in terms of having a backup available. If you do that and Farmer takes a shot and needs to leave, then what?

I think playing Farmer against a LHP makes sense in a vacuum but even if the odds are long of it happening I don't know that those 2, maybe 3 ABs for Farmer against Lauer is worth the risk of having Brian O'Grady catching or something like that.

I get your larger point but they've played many innings this year without a true catcher available to use on the bench. It bit them in Chicago but that's the exception, not the rule.

It's not like Farmer's bat is so good you need to get it into the lineup anyways. I know he has some use as a versatile backup catcher/infielder with some pop, but I feel like some really overrate him (especially in the Reds broadcast team)...he isn't really having that good of a year at the plate. Thom's constant"x RBI's in only x AB's!" comments aside.

It probably all doesn't really matter, but Farmer goes .309/.356/.545 vs LHP this year, while JVM goes .154/.353/.231. If you're trying to win this game, I think it's a good move.

He adds Galvis to the line up, which is fine . But WTF, please explain moving Peraza up to 5th to protect Aquino? Ervin or Galvis makes far more sense hitting 5th, guess Aquino will be pretty much pitched around every at bat tonight seeing nothing close to the strike zone . Peraza should be hitting 7th or 8th, hell even lead off before you bat him 5th. Bell's lineup makes absolutely no sense.

Not sure in my 35 years of watching and 25 of those years really watching around the league that I can name a time that both catchers were injured and the 3rd guy had to go in. Maybe once or twice. We let Peraza and Farmer pitch in crazy situations...why couldn’t VanMeter or Ervin or Peraza catch in a pinch? It’s never ideal but it’s such an incredibly low low risk of happening.

He’s right about that though lol. If they play all the left handed hitters like they’re platoon guys without ever giving them a chance to develop against LHP, it becomes kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. Bell did it with Winker and now he’s doing it with Vanmeter. I’m generally positive about Bell these days, but his overactive tinkering based on handedness is pretty dumb and his biggest weakness as a manager, IMO.

I don’t think platoons are tinkering. I would like to see JVM get some ABs against LHP but Bell’s got a mandate to win games and that’s what he’s trying to do. One can’t really argue that starting a lefty over a LHP masher gives the Reds a better chance to win.

I get it, but it’s annoying that Winker and JVM are currently being fast tracked to platoon guy status without ever really seeing if they can be full time starters. That ship has already sailed on Winker, and it’s kind of headed in that direction with JVM. It’s doubly annoying when Peraza likely doesn’t have much of a future left of this team himself.

Some of the platoon decisions have been pretty dumb too. Like tonight, as Doug pointed out on twitter, Lauer has reverse platoon splits and JVM had an OPS over 1.000 against them in AAA. We don’t really know how he fares against them at this level because he has a whole 13 AB’s so far.

Likewise I think it’s dumb to hit Jose Iglesias cleanup in any situation ever just because the opposing pitcher is a LHP who he has good numbers against in like 20 PA’s. That was a notable clunker from sometime last month if I’m not mistaken.

He had what? 184 hits last year. As he got rolling I just kept thinking....why do teams shift on most everyone but don’t scoot he heck in on hitters like Peraza?

Last year of those 184 hits it seemed like 100 were just contact shots that fell between infield and outfield ....the balls that beat the outfielders were HR....very very few balls were struck with his typical trajectory that got over their heads or gapped for doubles.

Seem like some adjustments have been made around the league. A lot of his doubles are down one line or the other. I would move in even more until he started burning the outfielders.

I don't think Peraza is "terrible" but I think he's at a sink or swim moment and he's sinking. He's only really starting against LHP at this point, and only doing okay in that role. I think Dietrich's return might bury him on the bench for good.

Peraza before that error had played 50 games and over 300 innings in the OF without ever having an error

I don't think its a problem with skill, wherever he plays, I think his focus is often lacking when he is playing defense, base-running, or bunting, and for that matter choosing what pitches he swings at! Maybe he hadn't made an error in the OF because of inexperience and more focus, and now that he has more experience there he is more prone to loss of focus. Maybe no errors in the outfield, but I'm sure he has had more than one misplay. He strikes me as a player that seems content to be mediocre, draw his salary, and enjoy the life.

Perhaps the box needs adjusted to reflect the location of the camera and to reflect balls that cross the plate (or not) that we can't see well from our views.. I'm still not in favor of robo umps in the least.. Something that box doesn't take into consideration is the height of batters. A very tall batter vs a very short batter, etc..
