Caleb Smith starting for Miami. Smith’s ERA has been rising steadily the past month to the point the Marlins are talking about shutting him down for the year. A good oppotunity for the Reds’ hitters.

JVM looks horrible vs LH pitching so this makes sense. He's a hard worker. I think he'll make great strides in this area next yr but right now he looks like little leaguer who's never seen a lefty before

Need Van Meter in there everyday. No reason for him to sacrifice at bays to Galvis or Iglesias.

He’s got to have at bats against them to get better. Wins and losses don’t really matter at this point except for our draft slot

Peraza optioned to Louisville

Optioned, not DFA'd, so he's going down until Sep 1 to work on something, hopefully being focused all the time and practice the fine points of many positions, base-running, and bunting, as well as offensive approach. so he can be fully versatile. A lot for 5 days.

He has 19 total PAs vs LHPs this year and has a .316 OBP. That's basically no sample size, but he hasn't been a disaster. He had a 1.054 OPS vs LHPs in AAA.

Damn hoss, you seem a bit testy today. Cool your jets. And by the way, it has plenty to do with Iglesias. Galvis plays short, he can start in place of Iglesias, therefore giving the start at 2nd to JVM.

Galvis has been solid against lefties this year but it’s the weaker side for his career (.666 OPS against them) and pretty much everyone sans Votto in the lineup hits lefties well. If it was against a righty he’d probably be closer to the top.

Let's not cherrypick stats. He has 2 hits in 19 PAs for a whopping .133 BA vs LHPs. His OPS is .514. Kudos to him for coaxing 3 walks leading to that .316 OBP, but that's about all he has. The PAs I've seen of him vs LHPs has looked "disastrous".

No way, anytime you are not in contact with the bag you are subject to being tagged out -- appropriate rule and you know it going in - don't do it. Part of the skill of base-running is to do it according to the rules, no reason to adulterate it.

It’s pure physics. When you slide into the bag, you look in real time, and to the naked eye to be on the bag the entire time. But for fractions of a second, there will be a sliver of space between you and the bag. It’s nearly unavoidable if you slide on top of the bag. The only way to see it is with super slow motion, HD camera work.

Calling the runner out on those occasions goes against the spirit of the rule.

I respectfully disagree. The only place you should slide on top of the base is home, and once you touch it you are good!

I don’t think they’ve ever drawn well. In one of the years they won the WS they were at the bottom of the league. It’s just not a good place for an MLB franchise. They need to move.

It is Chicken and Egg....they had a chance. South Florida and Florida in general has always been a big baseball region, but it was fans of whatever team they supported in the North before moving down. So they came in 1993 and sucked like all expansion teams do....and it was going to take a while to get Yankees, Red Sox, etc. fans to buy in a little, and probably a generation before they began to be the #1 team in the area. Then 1997 happened, and by that postseason the area began to catch the fever and support the team.....then the day after the World Series they began to dismantle the team. All of the progress and emotional buy in from fans gone within a month. Late in 2003, it began to happen again, and management even assured fans they would not strip the team down this time....and damnit they did it again. Florida is a tough market because everyone already has their favorite teams, and it will take time for kids to grow up supporting the local team. Most Reds, Yankees, Dodgers, etc. fans are not going to change their team and until this current generation, almost nobody was raised in Florida....they all came from somewhere else with strong loyalties. I recall when I was in high school in the 90's...we had about 85 guys on the football team, and only one player was born in Florida. It takes time.....the only team in FL that has that deep fandom like northern teams is the Dolphins because they have been here forever. Next is probably the Buc's. The Heat and Magic are still mostly fair weather fans....as are the Jags.

I think the U of Miami stayed there until around 2006. I recall they were really bad, and got demolished in their last home game at the Orange Bowl. It was within a year or two one way or the other of them leaving the Big East and going to the ACC. Is it just me or has Thom not been too excited tonight on big reds hits.

He hasn't screamed, "ARE YOU KDDING ME?" yet? I haven't been paying close attention to the game tonight nor last night after the Pittsburgh fiasco..
