Given the health of the team right now, I don't know what else Bell is supposed to do.

Question for anyone who wants to answer..

If the coaching staff ask you to make out tonight's lineup, how would you do it?

Mahle's ERA is over 5.00. This almost has an "tryout" feel to me like Gausman's start did. (Gausman failed his audition). Mahle has an option remaining. Sims used his last one this season. Unless he has really good game I'm thinking I prefer Sims as our #5 next year and have Mahle in the role Sims had this year (AAA starter, bullpen option in majors).

1. Gray
2. Castillo
3. Disco
4. Bauer
5. Sims

I agree if he doesn't do something in his last couple games I think the Reds go into the offseason shopping for a fifth starter. I'm not sold on Sims. I wouldn't mind getting Roark back but I think he might be too expensive. 2 for $15M?

Nice play by Mahle to get the lead runner, although the Suarez to Iggy throw was a smidge premature and if it weren't for it being difficult for Schwarber to reverse course and Iggy's speed, the hitter might have made it to 2nd.

Lorenzen clearly forgot that unwritten rule not to make either the first or third out at third or don't make the second out trying to steal third when you are a middle reliever trying out for centerfield. Sometimes that last bit gets left off.

This game is a good example for the offense vs. bullpen debate. It's just much harder on a bullpen trying to potentially make a 1 run lead stand up for 3 innings (hopefully they can do something in the 8th or 9th though). A better offensive team might have been able to sock a donger that inning to make it a 5-1 game instead.

Looking forward to Marty getting back on the mic for the stretch run of his last road game, win or lose, now that the 8th is upon us. Cowboy is many things, but a play-by-play man is none of them.

But something I noticed earlier, when I was still on the TV: Thom seemed to have 2 or 3 random excuses to talk about the Cubs TV crew and TV deal, including a lengthy monologue about how this is ALSO the last Cubs series that will ever be on WGN, because the Cubs are starting their own RSN. He even plugged it by name, and said "It'll be Cubs 24/7, if you're into that sort of thing."

Is it wrong that I started thinking that Thom is into that sort of thing? We know everything about his dad's contract, but nothing about his. Is it possible the Reds let him know they want a clean slate and gave him permission to start negotiating, and Thommy Boy knows where he's landing, already?

I'd say it's more likely that he's begging for a job.

Will never understand throwing an 0-2 pitch anywhere near the strike zone

It’s also not real useful to throw anything not at least somewhat tempting. An 0-2 pitch that teases the strike zone is a good pitch.

1. Gray
2. Castillo
3. Disco
4. Bauer
5. Sims

Mahle seems to have passed the audition. Welsh seemed to think he had a different approach this time out. Hopefully it works going forward.
